That sounds good as it would simply the process for a new resident, but then whose avatars available for purchase would we put there?   I hear people screaming FIC just at the thought of it.   Maybe a contest, where 10 lucky avatar/clothes creators would be randomly chosen to market their wares at the Welcome area.

Rotate the selections of complete avatars varying in price, quality, genders etc. As one poster pointed out it can cost $100 or more but there are also decent ones for a little over 100L$ including a mesh body and head.

No, let's put them all on a kind of gumball machine and for L$100 they could win one at random. Then occasionally there will be a superdeluxe one someone could win also totally at random!

I created a new alt today, used the LL viewer, yet still found myself rezzing in at the Firestorm gateway. I thought this must've been a glitch because I'd been there before on my Firestorm viewer.

Why would LL send people using a LL viewer to a Firestorm gateway or to an old, outdated and unmanned gateway if they want to retain new users?

I created a new alt last night too.  I  signed up for free Basic, and when I got my account details, there was the button to download the SL Viewer.  I already had the SL Viewer installed, but I pressed the download button anyway, and it sent me the 7.0.0.580782 - GLTF PBR Material Import viewer, instead of the Default SL Viewer.  Since I didn't want to remove my Default viewer and use an Alpha/Beta viewer, I logged into my existing SL Viewer with the new alt name and password.  (I was not logged into SL on any other viewer.)

It sent my alt to the Firestorm gateway, the same as you.  I do not think this is random.

LL is figuring out my new Basic account is an alt somehow, and therefore sends me to anyplace but their new Welcome Hub.

FYI:

I used my normal IP.  I used a new email address.  I used a new fake birth date. I used a different security question.  I used my normal desktop computer. All you need to do is start up a viewer, but not login, and LL has all the unique information about your computer.  They must compare this to their existing database, and decide to send you to anywhere but the Welcome Hub if your pre log-in data finds a match.

So, thinking I should have used the viewer they sent me on the LL new user login page, I installed the alpha PBR test viewer they sent me.  I hope a real newbie does not get this lag test program.  It took one look at my graphics and set me to between Low and Mid.  Ugh - 2006 graphics.  It set the LOD to 1.15, so low that the trees less than 128m away at the Firestorm hub did not rezz at all.  Anti-aliasing was disabled. DD was defaulted at 128m, no way to turn off ALM of course, and well graphics looked like sh*t.

But I was able to find a LM to the Welcome Hub, using Destinations and the Social Casino. Once I managed to get to the Welcome Hub I noticed the signs were half rezzed or not at all.  The arrows on the floor that guide you through the intro steps also did not rez. The entire floor of the welcome area was just a fuzzy white.  This was because of the PBR test viewer.  I have never had any rezz issues with either FIrestorm or the SL Viewer, using High-Ultra settings at the Welcome Hub before, with the same computer.

So how does one get the actual first time SL user experience?  LL has made that nearly impossible for existing residents and their alts.

I used the same RL birthdate & email for all my accounts, so this may be how the viewer knew I was an alt of my original account.

I'm led to believe that each viewer installation creates a special ID that associates all accounts logged in with that viewer as related and sends that back to LL even without accounts having the same email address, etc.  Once this association is done, it's done forever.

Yes, that is part of the log-in password security system.  The special ID changes if your Windows version or hardware configuration changes.  So LL is really filtering out any "new" alts from their Welcome Hub, and sending them wherever.  They used to just block the LL welcome island from existing residents.

Well, when I meet noobs, I bring them around a couple of different types of sims and make sure they have a really good time. Money often comes up, but I tell them not to think about it right now and instead just enjoy the experience until they find their groove a bit. Anyway, I noticed people in their 20's initially want fantasy avatars which i know nothing about. I only usually talk about 💰 with people looking to update their bits and pieces and only if they ask. And the weird part is, when you get to know someone in a particular avatar, it can me extremely disturbing when they update 😳.  .......sorry off topic again 😂. Carry on.

The Firestorm Gateway is great...several sims....a basic area and then an easy gateway to a more social Firestorm area...very clear instructions...lots of people around to help who messaged me...even a Linden there....gateways to various interests after completing the tutorial.

Not sure a LL Welcome area is even needed, but where is the official LL Welcome area does anybody know?

And a soothing natural landscape with green and brown things growing out of the ground, and gravel paths and wooden bridges, and streams...

I wonder how long the space station look will last at the LL Hub?

I have yet to see the LDPW update an old welcome area or Hub. I don't expect the space station at the center to change in style. I do expect a couple of the outer regions to change when their sponsors decide they're not making as much money as they thought they'd make. (SL residents are not going to pay big money for individual songs when they can easily listen to music for free.)

I hope that if this Welcome Hub does well, LL decides to copy this style to the old Welcome areas and hubs.

The Theme Building at LAX.  The inspiration for WelcomeHub?

Designed in 1959, it's still there. Nobody can quite figure out what to use it for. It's been a restaurant a few times. It's been used for storage and offices. It's in the center of a large traffic circle, so it's hard to reach. Right now it's closed.

It's the one we've all been talking about that opened along with the SL20B celebration.

Oh I know it's what we've been talking about...I just didn't know how to get there, as I just made a new alt and it took me into the Firestorm gateway.

Going to explore the official LL welcome hub later today.

The Welcome Hub is just South of the Ranch Home regions and just North of the Log Home regions. One can even ride a train there from Moose Tracks.

I wonder, if you make a new avatar from the Official Viewer - does it "always" take you to the WelcomeHub?

It would "make sense" if users creating accounts from the Firestorm viewer are starting out in the Firestorm Gateway.

Yes this is what is odd to me...I logged on with the SL viewer and it took me to the Firestorm Gateway.  Apparently, as others mentioned earlier, they are depositing those who are not actually new, ascertained in some manner,  away from the official LL Welcome area.

You create a new account from the SL "sign up" web page.  Then you log in with the SL Viewer.  You end up in the Firestorm gateway.  It's all explained a few posts earlier in this topic.

Firestorm is no where in the picture here.

Yeah, that's odd! I always thought "specific gateways" were associated with specific signup / login methods.

I believe you, of course. I am just surprised.

Unless LL has bought Firestorm recently, the LL gateway should send you to the SL Welcome Hub.  Some say they send you to any random gateway hub that is registered to be a newbie hub.  If so, what is the purpose of the SL Welcome Hub?  We think they are routing alts to anywhere but the new Welcome Hub.   Because who wants to help an alt?

This is the Linden Lab Gateway Page. SIgn up here, and get sent to the Firestorm or other gateway not run by LL.

Well of course you can get help, if you can get there.  A REAL new account will have no clue, unless they are sent there after the first login.

Oh I was just bein silly.

But seriously, would it matter if the truly new person went to the Firestorm welcome area?  There was nothing specific about the Firestorm viewer that I could see (I did not investigate this thoroughly though)...maybe they'd just think the area had cool name.

And, the Firestorm welcome area is great -- very effective
