And oh boy if you're a good artist you'll be making TONS of money doing furry art commissions lol, people are willing to pay a lot to get their avatar drawn, and considering $20 (assuming that's the average fee for a commission) is about 5000L$, you won't be having problems paying for land rents

Sounds like a great idea, but he would have to pay for uploads, wouldn't he? And is it possible to get the templates without buying them?

I assume the customer could send him the templates, and recieve the finished product out of SL and upload them self. The customer would want to see the work first, yes?

It would take some time to build a reputation and be known?

I think marketing is one of the hardest things. You can be the best artist, but if no one knows it, zero sales.

If they knew how to script & mesh thats the only time you rent land...

99% of the SL residents who want to get land, get it to have a home...

OP's question coms in  two parts, one about making money, secondly about getting land.

I was talking about drawing commissions :) since he mentioned he consider art as an income, I assumed that he's an artist

I think if you want to make money in Second Life you have to examine what real life talent can be turned into a marketable skill in world.   If you have any sort of artistic or technical ability then you should just look for a niche you can fill for the residents of Second Life.   You really can do almost anything and make Lindens here if you have any sort of talent or ability even if it is just being a CSR for a group you are active in.   Then develop mutually beneficial relationships with people that can support and promote you at the same time you help and support them.   I have made Lindens being a live model for events and stores and then was asked to be marketing manager for Ghee.  When my real life job became too stressful I took a step back from that and looked for something else that I could do to fill my time in Second Life that suited my new real life schedule.  I think that is important to consider - what is your real life schedule like?  The last thing you want is to start a venture here in SL, have it take off and then have  no time to really work at it because of real life commitments.  That would just cause stress - and not the good kind.   If you have a busy schedule or one that is sporatic like I do,  then I would also recommend working out a schedule where you fit everything you want or need to do in both real and Second Life into it.  It really helped me a lot to do that.  Everything got attention then and nothing felt overwhelming time wise.   For example you may spend an hour doing promotions for your abilities every day,  you could put in an hour on creating or updating your social media.  Since you said you are an artist you could spend a few hours creating new art pieces daily, or watching YouTube tutorials on how to develop skills in Photoshop or mesh creation.   You can really tailor it to you and what you want to do and what will help to achieve your Second Life goals and still have time for what is really important in anything we do in Second Life:   F U N.

A ton of people have given some great advice and I didn't read everything folks have said, so there may be some overlap to what they have already said as well-- which if there is, I'm sorry!

* I'd suggest first figuring how much you do want to spend on Second Life or how much you can make safely. So, if you do decide to do Casinos, Fish Hunt, or Alienum as a profit making, you'll need to determine how much you can make in about 4-5 days, as most places rent on a weekly bases. From there, see if you can find land to rent that will fit in the pocket book of what you can make. Another option is maybe turn to RP communities that have towns/cities and see about joining a 'job'. If you don't mind being social, clubs sometimes are looking for Greeters and such as well.

* If your willing to spend real life money from time to time, figure out how much your willing to spend and break that down by 4 weeks, because again renters tend to operate by week, not by month (normally).

* If you don't mind spending RL money however, you may want to look at a Premium account. If your new you'll eventually not only get 1k, but you get 300L a week (every Tuesday). This also allows you to get 1024m of land on the Mainland, but again, not exactly a must either.

* There are places that sell items for around 50L, I don't know where those places are, but there are places that sell created items for fairly cheap, including on the Market Place as well.

* As for art, if your like me, an actual 2d artist-- You'll find it tricky to sell drawings on SL. It is not a popular medium and from what I've been able to tell, not many people are really interested in 2d art. That and to make some type of actual profit off of it, people won't really spend the L, so you'd probably have to sale your work for like 50L at the least, and even then that is pennies for what you could sale it for in RL. Just comes down to how important that profit is to you.

Second Life can be as cheap or as expensive as you make it. The road to how you do it, is up to you, as there is no right or wrong way to go about things here. I do wish you best of luck in your journey here in SL!

The 1,024 sqm land size increase and prim increase was one of the main reasons I went back to being Premium. Having anything beyond that size (I've been there) is just not worth it for me, prices being what they are. Now I just pay a one-time fee (well, once a year if you renew) and you can run a business just fine from a place you can get with that, depending on what you sell.

I've made a few thousand L$ in bike races (in total, over time), but that usually takes some L$ investment and always a lot of practice. I drive because I like it and have met some very interesting people doing so, not to earn. I *once* made some half-decent L$ on a land deal, but that was almost just pure luck (and a bit of daring to wait for the right time to sell). To earn real L$ on land you have to be much more invested in it than I'm willing to be.

If you can learn to make good and usable textures (for builds etc, maybe smaller things too) there always seems to be a need for that.

This is sometimes frowned upon (and sometimes for valid reasons) when suggested as a way to earn L$, but I did a lot of fishing when I was new. Was slow and not very rewarding L$ wise then, but I just tried it again the other day. Those XPs from back then add up. Not much in the grand scheme of things, but enough to rent a fairly decent place if I *really* had to do it that way. Not that I would want to, but it's doable. Probably not as great for those who have to "feed" the L$ to the bouys, though :)

Just my L$ 0.2 thoughts as a quick comment :)

You are trapped in a corner and Ramsay Bolton and a Gorean roleplayer from Second Life is coming at you. Both intend to capture you and treat you according to the books that describe them.

You have only one arrow left, so who do you shoot?

It's an ocean of difference in the writing, I must admit that I only read quotes or separate pages of gorean stories, while I have read all the ASOIAF many times. If you made a roleplay that was true to ASOIAF gory parts and set up House Bolton, it would not look nice and the things done would not be nice. The TV show is actually soft on the worst abuse.

You can say the Talisa Magyr was made to soften the impression of how the women were portrayed in the books. The TV series needed a dumbed down 21 century love story and a modern eye for the female role, so they created Talisa. But you could be in Gor SL as a Physican of the Green Caste, and do the healer work as Talisa did.

Because the Gor books focus on haughty free women who end up enslaved and loving it, people always want to be that role in the roleplay. When it actually was only a few percent slaves, who was treated like a rarity, you can't walk in SL Gor without stumbling over slaves.

It was no egalitarian thinking in either of these fantasy worlds, even if one is written 1000 times better than the other.

But I am walking out because this has nothing to do with the topic.

Who the heck is Ramsay Bolton?

WTF does ASOIAF stand for?

I read 10 of the Gor novels a long time ago.  John Norman is real good at parroting previously written paragraphs. In short, his writing is the worst I've ever had the displeasure to read. And I still don't get the appeal of misogynistic toilet paper novels.

Maybe..give insecure overcompensating misogynist males a fantasy where they can control women?

Ramsay Bolton AKA Ramsay Snow from Game of Thrones TV series and A Song Of Ice And Fire book series.

ASOIAF = A Song Of Ice And Fire, the fantasy book series that the Game of Thrones TV series is based on.  Game of Thrones is also the title of the first book in the series.

Why can't people just say Game of Thrones? I would have known.

Yes, I know the books are titled differently but no one talks about the books much. :P
