Patreon is based on different levels of monthly rewards (although you can switch that to just donations, but that isn't different from all those other "support" websites and isn't specific to Patreon), so someone who wants to make the platform work, would need to distribute rewards.

I have no idea what someone from Second Life could offer as rewards, because of Second Lifes own economy. If you do something that other people consider worth their money, you already have established your financial support by just selling the fruits of your talent.

No if it just sit there and don't spam.

If you just "sit there" for donations, it's begging no matter how nice and quiet you are.

If you make a Patreon page and don't want to beg, you'll need to promise to do something for the people who do pay. Nothing wrong with that. But if you don't follow up, they'll probably leave because you're undeserving.

Maybe Linden Lab should set up a system, like with permissions and settings so we can create and sell prims and content to each other!

If they're smart, they'll even have some kind of web page where residents can search and shop for all our creations.

If LL does that, we won't need sites like Patreon or GoFundMe, because people will be able to earn L$ right in-world.

... Oh, wait.

There used to be a system like that, but about 6 years ago, they decided to limit the ability to sell stuff you'd made on the website to people who didn't actually need to sell stuff to have money.

Now, if you are not in a position to buy L$, you are apparently not supposed to be able to EARN them on the marketplace, or by creating mesh for example. This is supposedly to prevent "people ripping off others IP" but it doesn't seem to have worked at all.

I find it interesting, and typically SL, that when somebody inquires about systems where people can DONATE money to fund an Artist in making art...

Most of the replies basically talk about how said artist should "sell stuff".

Personal experience suggests that the peole who make the most off selling "art" in SL, tend to be IP strealing rippoff merchants selling anonymous web-trawl porn pics, cropped and grey-scaled to turn them into "royalty free erotica", and knocked out on a prim for 50-100 L$ a pop, while people who actually make and upload their OWN art barely sell a damn thing.

Back in 2012, I was a guest artist at an event in SL, I sold a total of 4 pieces over the two weeks, I thought this was pretty poor, until I discovered in a conversation with the organiser afterwards that not only had I made the most sales, but I had in fact outsold ALL of the other 11 artists added together...

A year later, I had a modest gallery on a sim where I worked at sim staff, and I sold 4 pieces for 200 L$ each to this guy, meanwhile his sl wife across the street bought 2,000 L$ worth of small resolution cropped, greyscalled stolen web-trawl erotica at 50 L$ each.

I gave up trying to sell art in SL a long time ago, you earn more and for less work, being a professional Club Contest Entrant, or a Hostess, or Sim Security staff, or a Builder.

To be fair, the OP didn't mentioned to be exclusive about artists, just about using it for SL and considering the thread before...well.

Any artist can of course try to use Patreon in the same way other artists already use it.

Hope for ... Scams.

How about, nah.

Those two gofundme scammers got about USD$20K from gullibles, driving lessons, designer clothes in RL, more. We don't need to reward that sort of behaviour.

What is everybody (or maybe not everybody) standing point if somebody do a patreon clone where the artist can be receiving donations?

I don't think many people would be keen on that, there have been too many scams in SL. If you just want to have a Patreon because you are a struggling artist, and may occasionally release something that people may or may not be interested in, nah, SL people aren't going to go for that and of course Klytyna has already outlined a lot of issues for people trying to sell art in SL. If it's money you're after and you can't cash out or whatever I really don't understand why you would need Patreon when there are other ways for a talented person to earn money from SL residents that doesn't involve having a shop or selling on the marketplace. There have been creators in SL do amazing real life artwork for commissions through Paypal  (painting someone's avatar, or their pets, promoting on Flickr where lots of SL residents are), and of course if you are skilled with mesh or even textures you can do custom work for real money.

No I'm not. I wanted to say this before just I forgott. I'm not an artist on any level I even deleted my flickr because it was boring after a time.

I've seen SL creators who have actual patreons. Glutz has one, as well as a discord (I'm not in either). Nothing is stopping SL users from using other sites, you might as well ask for an in-world version of Flickr or Facebook.
