What can I do to my skybox?

Hi hi, was just making a post to look for suggestions and ideas on what I can do to my skybox.

So far I just have a house that I bought pre-made, it's pretty cool actually and big as well, came with furniture in it already. I also have a little dance area with a DJ set I put for no reason whatsoever. As well as a random garden and some trees. The red thing up top is where I take pictures of my clothing and upload to Flickr.

But I'm not really happy with it, it's just a bunch of random stuff all over the place. I'm still pretty new to this game so I wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions and ideas on what I could do to the place. I want to remake the whole land with cool stuff.

So does anyone have any ideas on what I could do with it? The land is 1760 sqm. It also has 697 prims.

Thank you! :3

Hmmm... I wonder if you might like a sky dome or panarama box for some scenery. The red thing can go higher up, outside of your current view. Just make a landmark for it, that way it's not an eyesore for your main living area. I think this is a great start.

Anything is possible in SL, you can place a fae forest on a floating sky-island. You can set up a zepellen. You could create a magical cave filled with glowing plants. A castle. A dungeon. A beach. A moonbase. A forest. A home in a tree. A barbie camper, complete with Ken doll. A Japanese temple garden. Recreate a set from a favourite TV show or movie. A volcano, complete with pile of gold at the top for a friendly dragon. You can even make a white space, and put in statues and artwork. Create an area based on Picaso's starry night, or Warhol's Campbell soup cans. Turn everything upside down, decorate it all on the ceiling.

Anything is possible. Anything you can imagine. Maybe consider stepping outside the house.

I'd love to make it so I live inside a dark dome with fog on the floor so it's like you're walking on clouds and then put lights on the ground so it looks cool.

I have no clue where to start oh my gosh, so much stuff ...

Does anyone know how I can keep the sun at a certain point in the sky forever? I change it to what I want but it won't let me press save or anything.

I would make break up your ideas into different areas on different platforms, for example put the club on its own platform.

I would get a cheap teleporter (like for example this one),  to get from one build to the other easily without having to search for landmarks.

I would put prims along the the edge of your platform with a wall texture on, to help stop you or visitors falling off and to beak up the horizon. You can put a transparent landscape texture or of trees or something behind it (eg this) to add a little depth too perhaps.

You might want to invest in a scene rezzer to make the most of your prims. You would use one to store scenes you make (so long as all the parts are copy\mod) and quickly tidy them away to rezz again when you need to. Novatech's Horizons system is a great example of that sort of thing with lots of extra features and add ons, but there are cheaper options too (this works pretty well).

If you've moved out of the SL viewer into a TPV, like Firestorm or many others, then you can use Parcel Windlight. http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_windlight

(Eventually the Lab will include something like this, eventually, it's on their roadmap)

Quite simple. I'd make something like the dome in Blender myself so I can do it square, but for the sake of simplicity the Turnip Dome is ok.https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Turnips-Skydome-20-Base-Package/4251774

If you want cheap and doable... 4 prims and make your own! 1 cube, hollow it out, then a prim on top and bottom, set the colour to black.

Then some fog, like https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Halloween-Animated-Ground-Fog-Mesh-3D-Effect-Gothic-mist/6488803 or hmm https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Ground-Fog-Full-Perm-Mesh/10123918

Maybe better than those something from ANC, at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Rigi/43/101/3799

and also look at

I think I found a sky dome I was interested in, but I'd really like to try making my own to see how it goes.

What do you mean by, "then a prim on top and bottom". This confused me.

I'd suggest this method:

1. Go to the ground and make a square prim as large as your property is. Make this prim 0.50000 on the Z so it's not to high. This will be your floor. When you have it the right size, on the edit tab set the Z Position number to the height you want it. This is your floor.

2. Go to your floor and rez another prim on top, make it the same size as your floor (or shift drag your floor up to make this second one the same size easily). Hollow it out to 95% and make it 20.000 tall on the Z. These are your 4 walls (you will likely need to rotate it so you get walls)

3. Shift-Drag your floor upwards to make the third prim, this is your ceiling.

You can build pretty much anything you want. I tend to make my skybox an internal space, ergo, I just build a box that doesn't look like anything on the outside but the inside is very decorated and filled with detail.

I would suggest you go to a sandbox first to try out any experiments and build out any new skybox to completion. That way you always have a nice home to return to if your building process takes a while.

Here's a beach I built as a skybox. My BFF wanted a beach themed venue skybox. You can visit it here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Grimsvotn/151/230/1002

My friend's parcel sets right on the edge of a region with the region in front being protected water. In order to get the full expanse of water disappearing on the horizon I extended the water off region with the anchor on my friends land. This is how sim surrounds work.

Where are the mountains from, @Blush Bravin? You made all the mesh landscaping items yourself?

It's nearly all bought products from various creators except for the large boxes that serve as the platform. You can go to the location and inspect the items if you'd like. I gave the slurl in the post. I built it I didn't create all the parts.  The mountains specifically are sculpts that were part of a waterfall. I unlinked the cliff parts and resized (and retextured) to use as the mountains. I do a lot of kit bashing when I'm building scenes.

Thats the first skybox i saw making me believe its a parcel at sea level...Well done.
And as you pointed out about the sim border - size really seem to make a difference.
