  1. Yeah of course! who wouldn't prefer to be on the web than cruising the countryside in a brand new car and riding bikes with flesh and blood friends?
  2. With the blue oval - if you find one in SL - it is likely to break down just like in RL. Yes I hate blue ovals. As far as stealing logos or whatever, who knows about that. I mean it is illegal but it does happen with a lot of stuff. But that is not what this thread is about... This whole driving thing is fun except for when I cross regions and sometimes my car ends up flipping all over the place or if I find my avatar in the car-seated position in the middle of nowhere and have to relog but still it is fun when it works. EDIT - My car seemed to work better when I wore my shades. I mean what day time drive in a rag top would be complete without the cool shades? I think my biggest lag problem is my vanity.
  3. Yeah I am kind of waiting to hear back from the landlord. I also did look at your web page to see what it has, thing is, I was looking at something smaller but what you have seems a good deal for someone needing that size a land and that many prims. Most of my experience has been L$2 per prim and the service and areas varied widely. I mean everything from condos to land to nasty apartments in ghetto sims. Usuall a bit more than L$2 per prim if there was already a house or apartment there but even with those, L$2 per prim would average out
  4. Never forget that when paying for something - you are paying not just for a product but for the service. I used to rent at IOP and the service is unbeatable. You can count on maybe L$2 per prim, a bit less even, but anytime there is a problem, the managers are there to help. Then I have been to cheaper rental places but trying to get any kind of service is out of the question, one time I rented a place thinking they might have an auto-invite to group but no, I ended up waiting 4 days. I didn't stay long.
  5. I was out on what i guess is mainland - anyways happened upon a place that is like 1500 square meters, 380 prims, L$380 a week. Was tempted to just jump right in cause of the prim count price and being sl close to the road. Anyways unless SL land value is dropping badly, it seems a little low priced? I sent an IM to the owner but she wasn't on so I will have to see what happens. I don't like to rent land until I talk to the owner as to make sure I get added to the group. Yes, one time I DID rent a place and it took 4 days before i was added, it wasn't automatic. There seems to be no idication on if the invite is auto or if the owner does it and the group is not open enroll. So is L$1 per prim on something of 1500 meters reasonable? Seems like "too good to be true" especially since LL doesn't even go that cheap. Maybe the owner bought more than they needed and are now just stuck with it for a while and wanting to recapture SOME of their investment or something?
  6. Using mesh is not an option for me, sadly. My computer just is not having V3, I have tried several different ones and about the time I try to open it, it looks like it is gonna work but then crashes. So yeah I understand about the drifts. I have one house that is REAL abd about it, so I might give a copy to someone on a better compuyter and see if they notice the problem or not. I would like to sell my houses, which is why I am trying to make sure the build is solid. As I know several othger SL'ers cannot see or use mesh, I am not real worried about that aspect of it. Interestingly enough - the best builder I have ever met in SL said the same thing about "SL is not perfect" so I shall see what i can do at least. I appreciate the advice and will try that thing with cache cause i just re-installed my viewer anyways.
  7. I have no clue how Nyll knew I was a Pontiac fan... Thanks Nyll, wow, even with my crappy FPS this car is not too hard to drive, except the crappy SL roads. Too bad it is no-mod cause I might need shocks and tires prematurely. Wow, this gives me a new project when not learning to drive - Mod my house a bit so that empty space can be converted into a proper garage. Now for a new question - How do I decide what color to use on this car? I know how to change it but how to settle on a color?
  8. People talk about a celebration when they die. I don't know, as much a smart-ass as I am and even *I* would have a hard time finding fun during a time when a loved one passed. For an SL funeral - that is not something I like to think about. I cannot imagine being dead in RL or SL (that make sense?) I mean wow, I don't really know how to respond to this one. I know one thing - though I play Second Life here in life, I hope when i am gone I am not in a region they call "Second Death" I hear that sucks.
  9. I was bored, no one on, and kind of wandering the mainland roads... Anyways just for fun i decided to pick up some freebie cars. Never had one of those, always seemed silly but why not? Harmless SL fun. Thing is, one of them seemed easy to drive but the other ones - BARELY touch the arrow keys and the thing would do a 180.One of them did not, It drove like a RL car I guess - normal response steering. The good driving car I found as a freebie to use at some gas station. When it vanished, it just vanished. So, the pricier SL cars - are they easier to use as in - steering is not as sensitive? It is not like REAL important that I get some SL car but just something for kicks. So what makes an SL car a "good" one vs crappy? I imagine it has nothing to do with a blue oval like in RL.
  10. Sometimes when building a house I will get prims like want to rotate. I build the house and I will notice some bad flash, cam in, edit and notice the prim decided to rotate like 1/10 of a degree on one or more dimentions. So I fix it by editing linked, but sometimes it decides to move back. These are just on standard prims and most prims are at 90 degree increments (except for roof prims) What am I doing wrong?
  11. If this Fb VR is anything like FB and it's zombies, it will be the most boring VR imagineable. Can you imagine a FB VR? people would be eating dinner with the family, taking the kids to little league, breaking up with their B/F, and all the other mundane boring crap. FB zombies do not have imaginations. Their avatars would be as fat and ugly as the RL person. And you know if someone dared imagine, FB would make a rule against that. They would say you do not resemble your avatar or something. Cyberextruder once had some machine where you could put your RL face on your avatar. It was in avatar island. Cyberextruder just might have a shot if they tried on FB. I mean those zombies cannot imagine that their actual looks are horrid and their lives are super boring. Granted SL players KNOW our lives are typically pretty boring but we can at least admit that and create a VR life where we are beautiful and rich. FB just sucks and what really sucks is it is being crammed down our throats at every turn.
  12. Christ of christs, they are not REALLY trying to bring back bling are they? I thought that annoying feature disappeared about the time V2 was hitting the scene.
  13. Well, the design comes not in prims or textures so much as it comes from the heart. If you already have a basic knowledge of how to build that is perfect... Here is how I do mine - I use a viewer that is capable of resizing megaprims (Phoenix 1.6.1.something in my case, I cannot use V3) V2 doesn't seem to have this ability. First, have a plan on physical paper. At least a loose guideline. Then I start with a foundation. This is always the master/root prim. If you plan on using certain scripts for door openings, it will look to the root prim. Then the walls Anyways, I also decide and test the best texture repeat pattern and write that down. With some textures you can get away with any ol repeats but if you use something like brick, it is real important to know if you use say 2 repeats per meter vertical and 1/2 a repeat per meter horizontally. JUST an example. might want to have the calculator running in the background in case you have to stick in and texture an awkward sized prim somewhere that is .3 by .8 meters... If you are going to use hollowed prims to install windows into, make sure and hollow first then rotate. Nothing is more aggrivating than setting up a prim with the proper size and textres on each face only to have to re-do it cause the hollowing came out wrong. And it really is best to texture as you go. If you build a house THEN try to texture, you will more-less find yourself having to take a bunch of crap apart cause camming might be difficult. Don;t forget that with a single prim, you can hold SHIFT and drag it to duplicate it, like say you have two walls that are identical and both need a window opening. Let me be real honest - you are going to probably make a ton of blunders with your first house building attempt. I have built a ton of houses and I am still learning new tricks. I consider myself rather good with it, however I cannot do sculpts or mesh. I would be more than happy to help with things if you wanted to contact inworld. I will not do the work but can coach you thru any rough patches. You could even drop me a notecard with the issue and I would get back to you. I am in SL daily.
  14. Depends on what you want out of SL. Everyone is going to have some limitations. My limitation is I cannot see or use the latest junk in SL. You can always seek good freebies if you want to upgrade your avatar. You can find a lot of freebies, period. Search the marketplace for such things. The only time having money is SL is really necessary is if you want to rent land or if you want things that are not available for free. If you enjoy social interaction on the web, that doesn't cost anything in SL. it is like real life - make the best of what you have.
  15. All that and do not be logged into FB (or crap like youtube). Reading about what your friend ate for dinner the moment it happened is probably not worth the extra lag it will create in SL.
  16. My experience - The best people to make friends with are those who are close in SL age. I don't know why that seems to work best, maybe like a generational thing. As you are a newbie, the best folks to find would be other newbs. Sure it is kind of fun for us olbies to watch a pack of newbs running around in confusion, wearing boxes, losing their hair etc but we were ALL there at one time. These are the same people you will "grow up" with and learn with in SL and one day laugh about your newb-ness. So how to make friends? Well this is easy - just start chatting with folks and see where it goes. Most times it goes no where but sometimes - Well my best SL friend is someone who came in a month before me and i thought she was this "long timer experienced SL'er" cause she told me how to find my hair.
  17. Jennifer - I hate to be the one to tell you this but your avatar's house might have termites in the floor. They cannot eat the texturing but they do eat the wood. On a serious note - I have had this problem with my own house. It was in a sandbox that was due to restart soon. My problem was - I was not able to walk thru doorways. I have scripted doors in all the doorways. Yet I could walk thru some of the walls.Never fell thru a floor. This was not some market house that could have had sculpts and God knows what, no, this was a house i built myself. Sometimes I have the opposite problem though - instead of non-existent prims blocking me, my house sometimes decides to vanish 1/2 the prims yet I can still walk on them or have to navigate thru the halls with no visible prims to guide. Jennifer - SL does some weird things at times. I am glad someone posted about locking stuff to help, I need to lock my house anyways as to not delete it when trying to get rid of something else but mis-aim
  18. In some cases that is true BUT - In reality - there is always gonna be someone who does not approve of your lifestyle, who you are, who you associate with, what kind of job you have, or whatever. People who pry into the personal lives of others are pests. Sometimes people will nag or cause property and/or physical harm to those who live as someone else does not approve. It could be something so harmless as you are wiccan. Or maybe you date a "bad boy". maybe you are working a low-wage job. Inevidably, someone will razz you over these things. Especially if you are younger than say 30 years. Like some Rush song says - "Half the world hates what the other half does every day... Most of us do not want someone else telling us what we "should" be doing, who we "should" be friends with, and God forbid if you are what USA society considers "extreme" like muslim or gay. Then you are looking at possible violence or property damage from the bigots. These are the reasons some people try to protect what slither of privacy we have left.
  19. Yeah glasses tend to give me headaches too, bites cause i have a nice pair of GUESS sunglasses that i cannot even wear. So what if they are not expensive... With most technology or stuff that comes out - Most of it is a re-incarnation of something they had 20 or 30 years ago but it never took off back then either. That gives us just about 5 more years until they have talking cars. Not just GPS but the car will talk. Mine keeps saying "Kill me" We should soon have physical robots and fancy gloves again that will help us play video games. Reason so many technologies fail is cause in the ads, they look cool and easy to use. But you try to use it in real life and it is sometimes cumbersome, unreliable, too expensive, or takes batteries which means constant replace or recharge. Oh for you kids under 25, yes we once DID have a robot and wearable glove with Nintendo. Look it up if you want (Nintendo ROB/Power glove). They looked cool in the ad but they were junk. Totally.
  20. hmm, well, one thing maybe - has your computer maybe done one of it's defrags in the middle of the night like some people schedule? Have YOU cleaned up your computer or done something that would improve performace? I would think lag disappearing would not be a problem but yeah it would be nice to know what we did RIGHT to rid it if in our own hands. But if it mysteriously vanishes, we have to ask - Where does all the lag go Can it find it's way home Back to the open grid Of an avatar that's standing there And if FPS goes up Won't it always go up? I look in your eyes And Jennifer Boyle, I know that you still care, for me
  21. Send radar information to the viewer - Well, people I am interacting with already know where I am at. Usually standing at arm's reach. No GPS needed, just an arm to reach and feel me. Retrieve true online status (phoenix) - As I am usually the initiator of chats, I doubt anyone would know or care if I was "truely online Peform local teleports via llMoveToTarget - Doesn't "Walking" or flying do the same thing? My poor little avatar is large but she can still walk if she has her oxygen tank and walking stick. Listen on any desired channel and returns data to the viewer - hmm, not sure what that means Play a sound repeatedly - Christ of christs, who thought THAT would be a good idea? I can turn on the radio and hear a sound repeatedly, it is called "Taylor Swift's latest annoying song" I know you are providing info for the bridge but wow, that thing sounds like a stupid and useless tool. I can see where it would contribute to lag. At MY FPS, I can use all the help I can get. Despite my smart-assed thoughts of these functions, I do appreciate the feedback. I appreciate it more than you know. MY little avatar has decided to burn the bridge. Anyone up for roasted marshmallows? BTW I did detach the bridge, I use Phoenix V1 and my FPS doubled. For what i do in SL, I doubt I would really need that bridge anyways. If I notice problems I cannot otherwise get around without the bridge I would use it but otherwise, it was dragging me down, the lady who suggested removing it, i would love to shake her hand.
  22. Didn't they have some kind of silly glasses like this back in the early 90's?Remember how well those went over? Oh you don't remember them at all? For some reason, VR never took up as well as one would imagine. Reason is - people think their mundane boring daily lives are interesting to others. Someone mentioned highway deaths - Yeah some people who have no regard for being safe on the roads - However will they text, update FB, twitter, drink a beer, roll another joint, change the radio station, eat, AND wear these things? Oh and something silly like "paying attention on the road. What you can hope is that this same idiot is not behind you at a stoplight (when in town) Privacy - big companies will try ANYthing, anything to get even more info about people. They could have your life story as God knows it, have your complete DNA programming, know every thought you have ever had, and your whereabouts at every minute of your life and it STILL would not be enough for them.
  23. Expecting anyone to read that big ol long post is a form of griefing.
  24. First about the bridge - what is it even? What does it do? FPS - I noticed when I have to re-install an SL viewer, the first time I launch it, my FPS will be around 20 but real soon, within a few minutes, drop back down to the humble 7 to 9 I get in quiet areas. Busy areas I tend to get maybe 3 or 4 so I avoid them. (sad isn't it?) Also with this FPS dropping after a few minutes, it is not like I go thru changing a bunch of settings or anything. I already have everything set to low. I use Phoenix V1 BTW. 1.6.1. something I am not gonna log on right now but I wonder if the FPS drastic drop is cause of the few minutes it might take to create this bridge or whatever?Like without I am good but once it sets in I am screwed? Thanks
  25. I don't know much about mesh but if it is anything like sculpts - it DOES cut down on prim count which appears to be the bottom line when renting, but if sculpts or mesh create lag, then is it really worth dealing with? Quality VS quantity?
