  1. OS: MS Windows 7 64-bit SP1 CPU: Intel C2D E8500 @ 3.16GHz VC: EVGA NVidia GTX560 Ti 1GB RAM: 8GB Viewer: V3 or Firestorm Official Release FPS: V3 = 20fps (busy jazz club), 90fps (quiet static build region) on high settings with draw distance set to 160m, AA set at 4 and LOD set at 4.00.
  2. Actually the average new resident in SL doesn't know the first thing about traffic ... in fact traffic is not reported in the V2/V3 viewer like it is in the V1. And long-term residents don't care about traffic, they have their favorite haunts. More likely new residents chase after clustered green dots on the map or check out events posted to the SL web site or that show up on the login screen. Since it seems everyone's traffic is down we're all in the same boat so there's nothing to do but laugh in the face of adversity and enjoy the ride until LL explains what's going on. Would someone get the bartender to make me another Cosmo, please? Thank God it's Friday!
  3. a) SL doesn't multi-core well so having 8 cores does you little good rendering SL. I get good FPS (20 FPS) with a C2D E8500 @ 3.16GHz, 8GB RAM, and GTX 560 Ti w/1GB VRAM in busy clubs with my bandwidth set at 3500 kbps on a 12MB cable connection. b) The high FPS you're used to seeing with most games is not going to happen with SL. The reason is that most games have all the background and textures hard-coded on your HDD or SSD and they don't change. The background and textures in SL have to be rendered "on the fly" as they are sent to you by SL. In fact they can change while you're looking at them. That doesn't happen with most other games. c) It's not about SL keeping up, it's about your rig and bandwidth and viewer keeping up. Keep in mind that SL regions run at 45 FPS (check the statistics window of your viewer). Good luck optimizing your rig for SL.
  4. It doesn't matter whether you're a programmer or not, being snarky using really large bold fonts is rude. My concern for your problems has ended. Enjoy!
  5. "Avatar Physics" like everything else in SL is a) affected by how the viewer settings are set up (yours AND his), b) dependant on which viewer the avatar physics is being seen through, and c) open to interpretation as to what is "realistic" or looks good.
  6. Actually everyone uses SL for their own reasons, and there are many. What may be an enhancement or improvement for your use of SL might well be meaningless or a detriment to someone elses use of SL. If the graphics bug you mention is the OpenGL issue, that's not something that is easily fixed nor limited to SL (many games have issues with OpenGL); but there is an ongoing project working to resolve the OpenGL issue and a separate beta viewer that goes with it. If you're concerned about the fix maybe you could download that viewer and help.
  7. You're right, 1.23 isn't broken it's just a horrible mashup of old code, antiquated, no longer supported, no longer updated, does not render mesh, cannot upload mesh to the grid, does not have multiple layers, does not have proper multiple attachment points, does not have avatar physics, etc etc etc. It's not broken, it lacks functionality. In my experience chatting with people using 1.23 and V1 TPVs it seems most are simply resistant to change of any kind and will stick with their beloved V1 until they have no choice but to upgrade "if" their computers are powerfull enough to allow them to run the new viewer. You also make many asusmptions about upcoming changes to the viewer "2.X" and FYI the updated SL viewer is now in the 3.X phase. There is a 3.X Development Viewer available here for download that shows how the new viewer will look and work.
  8. This sounds like a common problem with NVidia graphics/video cards with older Core2 CPUs; go the NVidia control panel and turn off multi threading (default is auto, switch it to off).
  9. Actually I advocate estate managers and owners do all they can, using the tools they have available, to keep their regions running as smoothly as possible; i.e. when your region lags hit the restart button. The land I deal with daily is mainland so I go through Live Chat to get region restarts.
  10. It's really hard to blame poor region performance on Mesh. Perhaps what we need is to go back to texture hair, no sculpties and no flexi (<< that was sarcasm). LL does need to figure out how to better stabilize regions but in the mean time a region restart every couple days works wonders (in most cases).
  11. I read someplace in the forums, I don't recall where, someone had a similar issue with their Windows 8 beta machine and SL and the problem was the video card manufacturer's drivers didn't work properly with Windows 8. The solution was that Microsoft made available their own generic video card drivers that once installed allowed SL to run on a Windows 8 machine. Good luck and keep an eye on performance and temps.
  12. Actually MB was talking about script "time" not script "memory", but abusing either can have a negative impact on how a region performs when you get 30-40 avatars together for an event. When I buy new hair I make a copy for safe keeping and so I can re-adjust it if I need to, then I adjust the copy I wear and delete the scripts. I do the same with scripted shoes and skirts. This dramatically reduces my impact on a region both in script memory and time. I won't buy hair, shoes or skirts that aren't mod/copy (Mesh items being the one exception) or that don't permit the scripts to be deleted.
  13. Squatters have no land rights ... period. Squatters don't contribute in any meaningful way, unless you count the drama they create by being someplace they don't belong, but rather consume region resources they don't pay for. Squatters want something for nothing and that hurts everyone elses business who pays for their land and the benefits and conveniences that come with ownership. SL is free to play if you can't afford premium membership (comes with a free Linden home) or land, and the simple truth is no one "needs" a home to be in SL; that's just a convenient excuse to lobby for free land. Just like RL no one is entitled to anything for free.
  14. I don't know where the bandwidth numbers for optimum and maximum come from (I see the Phoenix wiki proposes similar settings), but my internet connection is a 12MB/sec cable connection and I have my SL viewer bandwidth throttle set at 3500kbps (3.5MB); SL routinely sends me data at speeds very close to that setting, I have little lag and very few crashes, and I don't experience much in the way of packet loss. I have heard that a good way to set the bandwidth is to set it at 70-80% of your "tested" (not advertised) internet connection speed. When I help people with laggy SL I more frequently find them with their draw distance set extrememly high.
  15. Actually it's been 5 months in the NVidia forums (and older if you dig deep enough), and it's not exactly a Second Life specific issue it does seem to be an issue across many games that use OpenGL. It's actually an NVidia driver issue. In the Jira LL has updated the OpenGL code in the Developer version of the viewer but that's led to some other complications (crashes, rezzing issues, alpha issues and etc) but they're working through it. It will be ironic if LL gets the viewer right just in time for another NVidia driver update that causes more issues.
  16. Like it says on this page: The following cards have not been tested with Second Life, and compatibility is not certain: NVIDIA cards that report as Quadro
  17. The Jira seems to be working correctly for me. 10pm SL time Oct 4 is still 8.5 hours away.
  18. In the clubs I frequent the % of V3/Firestorm to Phoenix is slowly tipping toward the mesh-capable viewers. Phoenix use seems highest with the more mature guests (older RL people) but as mesh clothes and objects spread across the grid more people will switch to a mesh viewer. Currently I'm buying only mesh clothes. If the V1 users can't see my gorgeous mesh gown or jeans that's their choice and problem-I'm not going back to texture hair or invisiprims either lol.
  19. Can you walk in SL? Do you know how to use animations? Do you know how to change clothes in SL? Are you able to show up for an event on time? Modeling in SL doesn't involve content creation so it baffles me what a "school" could offer besides a debit from my L$ balance lol.
  20. Your logic is flawed; you're comparing apples to oranges. When you play a cryengine game you're mostly playing a game with all graphics pre-loaded on your HDD. It's much easier for a PC to render what are essentially static cached graphics than almost 100% streamed graphics like in SL. I've been to Blue Mars and it's pretty but also static and everyone looks alike and so do the majority of builds. The cryengine is a neat platform but not nearly as flexible and amateur friendly as the SL platform. Nice rant though lol.
  21. @ Ayesha ... since it serves no useful purpose to be negative about an impending rolling restart immediately "before" the roll has commenced, because there is no opportunity for Oskar to change the code about to be rolled by the time he announces it, I think doing so is pointless and a bit mean. But if people think bashing and flaming is a way to influence what LL does, by all means I hope they enjoy themselves.
  22. Rock n Roll with the restarts, Oskar. Keep making things better. As for the negative comments ... same old same old.
  23. There's no problem with Mesh, other than the usual drama and tweaking that takes place every time something new rolls out to the grid. The drama is entertaining and the tweaks exciting. I wear mesh clothes daily, there are more and more mesh items available every day and different creators are using different approaches to mesh quirks. In time mesh will be as common on the grid as sculpties. I eagerly await mesh prefab homes, clubs and other builds. I expect LL's bias to be their own best interest, from their perspective, regardless what anyone else thinks. No one has to be or should be silent, but in my experience a more civil tone and approach to criticism gets a person's opinion more respect.
  24. A. Weekly rolling restarts on Tuesdays for the main grid while the residents are allowed to be inworld are WAY better than the Wednesday roll with everyone "locked out" of SL for at least 6-8 hours that we used to have to tolerate. Sometimes it was Thursday before we were allowed back in. B. Regions get laggy enough with only weekly rolling restarts. Restarting them less often would just make them even more laggy over time.
