  1. Nothing on Marketplace has any calories in it. :womanhappy:
  2. Jacki Silverfall wrote: How long do graphics cards last? I have a ATI something. lol My first graphics card was an nVidia GeForce 8300 GS that lasted approximately 5 months, before it died rather spectacularly after I was set on fire for the umpteenth time by my then-partner (!). The subsequent nVidia GeForce 9500 GT has lasted so far for this past four years. As the others say, things last longer/overheat much less, if the dust bunnies are blown out on a regular basis, but I don't know if anyone knows the average shelf life of each particular graphics card, or whether we're all still testing them.
  3. To add to Lindal's perfect answer, still hold onto this account, for if you ever wish to return to it (just in case you were thinking of deleting your old account). Often people feel they want to 'start over' in SL, and it's nice that we can do this easier in SL than in RL really. So start afresh with a new account, new inventory, new friends, and as Lindal says, transfer over from your old account to new anything that is transferable and usable, but be objective rather than sentimental I'd say.
  4. /me rubs the top of your head affectionately and dishes out a few extra strawberries for you.

Superbly imaginative. :matte-motes-big-grin-evil: OT but I need to say this: YES! Give us last names back, pleaaaaaase. Or how about individual names so everyone can choose his own lastname. :matte-motes-big-grin: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-7125 Thanks, Charolotte, for having that link to hand - I was just about to go and dig it out. To RyanEric, click on the link that Charolotte has given you, and add your name to this JIRA feature request. The more people who add their name/vote/watch, the more chance there is LL will bring back Last Names. :matte-motes-big-grin:
  6. I do not know of any free email on the web that is especially for Second Life users. The only thing I can suggest is having a separate email account just for your Second Life friends to use, via gmail, or yahoo. Or you can make use of my.secondlife.com, which is similar to Twitter, but it is especially for Second Life users. You can also make private messages there, BUT not everyone knows about it, or wants to use it. You would have to network with your friends/contacts.
  7. Look for competitions to enter. When I was new in Second Life, there was an SL newspaper (which sadly is no longer in existence) that would pay 500L$ for every photograph they published. Every week I would have a photo published, until one day they offered me a job as a columnist, which is something I enjoyed for a while. It did not feel like a job for me, because they realised one of my hobbies (which was locating and photographing bots) would make a good campaign at that time. This was very easy for me. I was very lucky. I cannot guarantee that you will be so lucky, but you maybe can to find a way of making the things you enjoy doing in Second Life financially worth it too. You will find that most of the people who have made a lot of Linden dollars inworld have worked for it, or been very good at something, and have been able to sell their services. Other people just choose to convert a few real life dollars/Euros/pounds into Linden dollars every now and then, or live for free. The exchange rate is so good, it works out at only pence/cents to do so, depending on what type of lifestyle you wish to have in Second Life.
  8. As others have said, don't touch it with someone else's barge pole even. And I love your name (I wish LL would bring back last names). Superbly imaginative. :matte-motes-big-grin-evil:
  9. @ Storm equally (sound of me knocking heads together) Come on now kids, let's play nicely :matte-motes-wink-tongue:

Not even on ones nominated by Lindens! :smileyfrustrated: At least that makes me feel a tiny bit better :matte-motes-big-grin-wink: Griffin Ceawlin wrote: Now I've just got to go un-nominate the threads I apparently nominated. I don't see any way to do so. Good luck with that. :smileytongue: I've contacted a moderator, and they've passed on the info to whoever it is deals with KB nominations. I'm now writing out 100 times, "I must be careful what I click on" ! :smileyembarrassed:
  11. Griffin Ceawlin wrote: Storm Clarence wrote: Griffin Ceawlin wrote: Rather than stickies, there should be a troubleshooting guide like on the Phoenix/Firestorm site. Of course, LL would have to maintain it... I am sure some of the helpers and contributors would not balk at the opportunity to maintain a guide. This should be one of the 'privileges' that comes with helper/contributor status. Helpers and Contributors can start new and edit draft KB articles, and Helpers can edit published ones (neither can publish new or with changes). Unfortunately, I don't think anybody at LL is maintaining the KB at this point. There are 22 Forum posts nominated (I won't comment on the judgement used in some of the nominations...) and 1 approved (which I cannot see? "Sorry, unable to complete the action you requested."), so I fear that any draft articles would just sit there. Hells Bells, it looks like I nominated an Age Play thread, and some others, which I most certainly did not!!! I do remember a menu popping down, but did not think I'd clicked on it. (I obviously have co-ordination issues.) Good job no one acts on these nominated threads! Thanks for pointing it out, Griffin. I'd never been over to that page before. Now I've just got to go un-nominate the threads I apparently nominated. Gad!!
  12. Nyll Bergbahn wrote: To add to Marigold's answer, read this FAQ which should give you all the information you need. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Usernames-and-display-names/ta-p/700173 Remember that not everyone will see your display name as many residents such as myself have that option turned off. Thanks for adding that, Nyll. I got dragged away from the computer.
  13. It's called a Display Name, and you can change it inworld, or via my.secondlife.com. To get to my.secondlife.com, click on the Second Life icon at the top left hand side of this page, which will take you to your dashboard, and close to the top will be a direct link to my.secondlife.com - if you don't know about this already, it's a bit like Twitter - another place where residents can contact each other, useful for when they can't log in to the main world. You get the option to change your Display name there. Important to note, all profile contents, including Display Names, must be PG. You can only change your Display Name once a week, so be careful what you choose, and use regular characters (some people have experienced failed log ins when their Display Name has been made up of weird and wonderful characters).
  14. Not directed especially at you, Freya, but to everyone (but you do make good points) Why did the beta testing of the Helper Island sims fail? It seemed like a great idea. Did all the Helpers have nervous breakdowns from having to answer the same questions over and over again? It was great to be able to click on a help button inworld and have the option to be able to teleport across to avatars who were there to help, and it would have been useful to have developed the Helper Island sims more by having up-to-date noticeboards on with solutions to these more common problems so the people with the problems inworld could get help inworld.
  15. It would probably be an interesting experiment for you to carry out. You can buy couples animations on the marketplace - Rendezvous are one I know of - where you can walk together or fly or swim. One person takes control of the animations, and you can ride like piggyback, with your arms wrapped around someone. Now, obviously, if one of those people is in non-human form, the animations aren't going to look the same, but in theory it should be possible for someone to make animations that would fit with the non-human avatars. Have a look around the Second Life Marketplace and see what is on offer. Also look for rideable vehicles. You can get much more information in the product's description there. Edited to add: If you are just wanting to set up photographs with people posing atop something, rather than riding it across the linden highways, look (again on Second Life Marketplace) for something called an Anypose HUD. With this you can rez a number of pose stands, and use the HUD to get people into the position you want.
  16. Storm Clarence wrote: I have 3 issues that perhaps some can help me with... 1) My avatar is half pink. 2) I can't rez objects in my little Linden home. 3) My inventory is missing. I enjoy helping, but Is this as good as it gets? Is the Lithium software so poorly designed that it does not allow people to help themselves, or is it the ignorance of the user? It's half and half. I mean, the software still stinks - we need a reply button, and stickies for sure, and look how even well-experienced Thinkerer jumped in with his well-meaning (!) response without seeming to get the tone of the thread so far. I think when you've got an issue, and it seems pretty massive to a newbie, such as not being able to rez, or avatar looking weird, or missing inventory (which is huge to anyone), they may go into a slight panic mode and become unable to see the wood for the trees, so start a new question. Also, I think it's pretty easy to type in your question and hit 'enter' before even realising there are already some suggestions up on the screen. Anyway, hopefully the avatar half pink, glass half empty problem will be fixed in this week's deploys. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Server/Deploys-for-the-week-of-2012-06-11/m-p/1567063
  17. Welcome to Second Life Answers, Grimdeath ;-)) The approved third party viewer, Phoenix, and probably Firestorm, have this effect, and others you can choose from. If you are used to using the official viewer, then you will probably get on very well with Firestorm too. http://www.phoenixviewer.com/downloads.php
  18. Welcome to Second Life Answers, Dee Sometimes you don't always get a true reading with the radar. The avatar who is showing on your radar as being nearby, but you cannot see, is probably just high up in the sky, so give it a test will you? Fly up slowly, and see watch what happens with the radar reading. My guess is the avatar will come within range properly, and the radar will be nudged into working correctly.
  19. Welcome to Second Life and the Forums, Rhonda1000 I see you've already had some great suggestions. One group that I've found incredibly helpful, and absorbing, has been "Fabulously free in SL". If you look up "fabulously free" in the inworld Search box, the group should come up. Join it, and you'll soon be receiving a ton of new landmarks/locations you can visit from where you can pick up some great gear. This helps you find your feet, and explore Second Life a little, meet some friends, until you settle in a bit. As for making money in Second Life, there are a lot of ways to do this also, but as Dresden already rightly pointed out, Second Life isn't a game in the conventional sense, you don't score points and pick up bonuses or anything like that. One way that people make money is by getting inworld employment (I used to write a column in an SL weekly 'newspaper', other people act as land agents, or models, or ... well, if you can think it, you can probably do it in SL). Other people learn how to make and sell things, from clothing to buildings, or handy gadgets and gizmos. You can sometimes pick up Linden dollars by winning races, entering competitions (even here on the forums there are occasionally photo contests with L$ prizes). But a lot of people simply enter Second Life for some type of recreation, and fund it with money from real world that they transfer into Linden dollars. The exchange rate is really excellent; you get a lot for your money, so if you like to shop, the world is your oyster. You will have entered world, and possibly got a home location, at a busy welcome area. Browse people's profiles, see how long people have been in Second Life, read their groups and picks; you can often find some very interesting places to visit and things to do from other people's profiles. And talk to people inworld too. You say you've found SL interesting so far, but just don't know what to do. If you're really stuck, click on "what is second life" at the top of this screen, and browse the destination guide. As I said earlier in this post, if you can think it, you can probably find it and do it in Second Life. Just have fun!
  20. @ Perrie too I sees where you're both coming from, but in a way you can see why they wouldn't have a direct support user group, because there'd be too many alts of suspended people coming forward saying 'no fair u ban me' etc., and it'd just end up being a counter-productive session as regards the others who had made the effort to go along and make suggestions for improvements for the majority of residents. On the flipside of that, I did send a couple of emails to one of the Linden people who used to attend one of the now-disbanded office hours sessions - I'd gone to one of the meetings and it was too busy, everyone wanting air time, and an hour just was not long enough or good enough. A couple of my suggestions looked to be taken on board and beta tested for a while, which was pleasing, but it all seems to boil down to lack of staffing to deal with all our needs (and I know that is a really poor excuse - they must be making the money). And gripe of the day I have, which continues from yesterday's gripe of the day really, the bl**dy fools who get themselves suspended are like the kids that used to sit at the back of class disrupting, and dragging us all down to their level. Hated it then, hate it now. 'no fair they don't ban them altogether'. :matte-motes-wink-tongue:
  21. I can't speak for all, but the User Group session for Beta Server is productive, informative, and the Linden people there are approachable. Granted, they can't (and won't want to) un-suspend your account if you've violated any ToS, and for sure if you abuse them, they're not going to stand there and take it any more than I would do if you stood in my garden and took a pee. Treat others with respect, and you get it back; pee in their garden and you get your face rubbed in it.
  22. The people I would consider to be vulturistic on these forums probably number less than a handful, especially since certain posters disappeared a year or so ago. There is one particular person, who I will not name, who classes himself as an SL mentor, but he is a vulture 9 times out of 10, and it is not just because his command of the English language is not good. Then there are three other vultures who you can guarantee with all gather together around the 'weaker of the species' (as they seem to view them). In one of the places I used to work, everyone moaned if they were assigned to deal with the customers who were from a certain part of the UK, claiming they were rude and difficult. This part of the UK does have it's own language, although not everyone there speaks it. I got everyone to make a note of whether each caller was nice or nasty, and on paper it turned out that only around 1% of callers were rude. On these forums, it's a case of getting to know who to trust, and who to ignore. Like in real life, we all find our level, and we kind of keep our own corner. Mine is over there, next to the cat basket. (Night everyone.)
  23. Dillon Levenque wrote: Ghostbusting? Did you say ghostbusting? Sorry, could not resist. But you are so right that Marigold has never asked for or even taken the credit she deserves for all the help she provided for so many people. Hahaha - superb outfit, Dillon. Regarding credit - the main thing was, I wasn't banned from SL for messing up the servers with all those "try and try and try until you log in" instructions I gave out!!! /me slides back into my comfy chair. I've had me 15 minutes of 'fame' *chortles*
  24. :matte-motes-bashful-cute: @ Dillon and Peggy - thanks for the amazing compliments. @ Dillon. Although when the latest batch of ghosting briefly occured earlier this year, the old 'back door' method wasn't as effective, and it really was essential people got in touch with LL directly, I had a ton of fun, and a great deal of personal achievement. Your comment means a lot, because many years ago when I was at school, an English teacher wrote on my school report that I had a "very unusual turn of phrase", "untidy handwriting", "restless in class". In RL I write a lot, for various reasons, but the only instructions are in the form of requests, which I type, because I do indeed have untidy handwriting " @ Peggy. Yes, it must be more than two years now that you (both :matte-motes-wink:) have been on my friend list. I remember very clearly how we met. Your ghost beautifully positioned along the railway line. It was like a treasure hunt, and there you were, a golden nugget :matte-motes-big-grin:
