  1. That's quite a shopping list. Gambling & banking aren't coming back to SL for the forseeable future. Gambling, because there's RL legislation that gets in the way and as for banking, two words: Ginko Financial. We do have memories, y'know.
  2. Post as much or as little RL information about yourself as you are comfortable with. Remember that SL, like the rest of the internet, is visited by scammers, stalkers, psychos, datascrapers and other ne'er-do-wells. Less or none is safest. There's no need to make your profile hostile and defensive. As a matter of fact some would regard that as a challenge. Furthermore do not, under any circumstances, ever give out any RL information about yourself to anyone in SL who demands it or attempts to trick it out of you by telling you a bit about their RL life as a quid-pro-quo for getting some information out of you. Chances are that they're just making up a fabrication about themselves. An example of a safe profile would be: I am a penguin and live in Antarctica with the rest of my flock. We discovered Second Life after we broke into an abandoned station with a working internet connection. It's great fun! My hobbies are fishing, sliding down ice slides and fishing ;-) An example of an unsafe profile would be: I live at 123 Any Street, Any Town, Any State, USA. My phone number is123-456-7890. The front door is always unlocked and I leave the keys in the glovebox of my unlocked car on the driveway. I work on the assembly line at Nucleon Atomic Motor Cars Ltd. in Any Town. The password for my Facebook account is: blahblahblah and the password for my SL account is: yadayadayada. My bank account number is: 1234-5678-9098-7654. The password for my paypal account is: password.
  3. Teleport to random locations in SL and draw the first scenes that catch your eye.
  4. Been a resident in SL for 7 1/2 years. My main activity in SL is live music performance and a bit of building. I don't socialise or RP much although I enjoy both. I do a bit of exploring to look at new and interesting projects whenever I have some spare time
  5. There's no way I could afford such an extravagance but seeing how you're [literally] pushing the boat out I can offer my services as a virtual entertainer. You'll need a video projector or two at your club on the boat and one avatar per video projector logged in at my SL venue while the performance is in progress. If you do take me up on my offer I'd appreciate it if you'd pay / tip nicely seeing how you can afford to go on pleasure cruises while I struggle to pay my RL bills & find enough money to buy food.
  6. I presume you've looked at this page: Broadcasting Howto In the 'Broadcast to a radio server' part you would input the details for the audio stream of the SL venue hosting your show. It's safe to ignore the Name and Genre fields. You must follow the instructions and download the lame_enc.dll and install it manually into the Virtual DJ plugins folder. AFAIK lame_enc.dll is freeware but for some reason is not bundled with alot of software that requires it. For example I had to download lame_enc.dll for Edcast which I use to encode my live music performances in SL.
  7. ^^^ What Amethyst said. Meanwhile mute the person who is harrassing you in SL and continue to file AR reports if they do not leave you alone.
  8. Nyll, if you have an android phone, I recommend you get the SL client Lumiya. The graphics are no great shakes but you'll be able to log in and communicate with your friends in-world for the time being until you get home. Get well soon.
  9. How will war affect SL? Well if the US descends into civil war it might affect SL because one set of servers are in California and the second set are in Texas. Two states which are highly likely to end up on opposite sides if the US were to break up. Other than that I can only see SL being affected by some nutcase blowing up one of the server farms Linden Lab owns. And even then the damage would only be temporary. As for physical damage to the internet itself it's likely that would have little or no affect as the internet would simply reroute itself automatically. Does that answer your question?
  10. Having and using alts is not against the TOS. If that were the case I would not even be able to reply to this thread. The first misconception is that people who use alts are underhand, deceptive, evil, cheaters or whatever. The fact is that you will have people who have such negative traits and will resort to them whether or not they have multiple accounts. Multiple accounts can, and are, used for a wide range of perfectly valid reasons. One person's "Onoz U haz t3h eb1l alt of dewm" is another person's alternate account to possibly try out role play in a different themed environment, or a funds-holding account, part of an artistic project or an avatar that is used for content creation or whatever. The fact that people tend to presume the worst is more an indication of how they would use alternate accounts rather than how alternate accounts are actually used by the majority of alternate account holders. I'm an entertainer / performer live musician in SL and I use alts as part of my performance act. I have had to deal with people demanding that I only perform with my main account as well as people demanding that I only peform with a mini-me realo human avatar and countless other pissant whiny drama whores with their idiotic demands. Guess what? I told them all to take a hike. I don't need their business. I have my own venue where I put on live music performances 3 times a week every week. Something I've done for years and will continue to do for years to come until Second Life closes shop. Everyone's welcome but anyone who takes exception to my live act earns themselves an instant ban, eject & teleport home. I don't even waste my time attempting to discuss their imaginary grievances with them. Life's too short to waste on things like that.
  11. People have been saying that SL is dieing ever since I joined in 2005 so nothing new there. Maybe SL is already dead and this is its afterlife or possibly undead? Who knows? Who cares? Only The Shadow knows!

The CPU tends to work a litttle harder on this one, since it's a multiseat for a few workstations (i.e. has 3 keyboards, mice and 6 monitors attached to it) Hmmm... My machine has an Intel Q6600 and an NVidia GT440. Intel Q6600: 45 C Idle, and 55 C - 60 C under load Nvidia GT440: 40 C Idle, 50 C - 55 C under load Your graphics card seems to be running a bit hot but the CPU seems to be OK. Could be all the extra monitors attached. Try it with just one monitor attached and see how you get on. I use a utility called Speccy to track system temperatures. You might want to try a custom cooler for your CPU.
  13. Hello JeanneAnne: It sounds like the heatsink/fan combo for your CPU was not properly seated or that its base [or the CPU cap] is slightly warped. Try reseating it using a good quality thermal paste. That said, some motherboards just run hot. I recently threw out an old Intel i945 chipset board that ran insanely hot even with a low-power Celeron CPU and an Asus Silent Knight cooler. Some boards are just junk from the get-go. If you can, test your CPU [and all your other components] by swapping them out one-by-one into a known good machine. That way you can eliminate the components that are good and isolate whatever's faulty. Seeing how your computer is fairly new all the components should still be under warranty. For example: if all your components run normally in your test-bench computer then the fault would have to lie with the motherboard, If the CPU still runs hot on the test-bench machine then you have a dud CPU [possibly a counterfeit overclocked CPU... yes, it does happen!]. As soon as you locate the faulty part [if that is the case] get an RMA if it's still under warranty and get a replacement. Another possibility: your power supply might be faulty and send too much current to the motherboard. Swap out your PSU with a known good one and see if the problem goes away. Another possibility: the voltage regulators on your motherboard are faulty. If you're handy with a soldering iron it could be a quick job to fix otherwise send it back for a warranty replacement. Did your brother overclock your computer? If so, get him to put it back to its stock settings. Overclocking, if done badly, can make computers unstable and run very hot. Good airflow is important. Did your brother make sure that all the fans in your computer create a contiguous airflow? If you have 2 fans blowing air at each other [for example a case fan and the CPU heatsink fan] things can get hot very quickly! As for keeping the inside of your computer clean: use a tin of compressed air [or good old lung-power] and a paintbrush. Keep it earthed while cleaning. In the UK that would mean leaving it plugged in to the wall socket *AND* switched off. In the US you would need a wire attached to the case at one end and tied around bare metal on a radiator or other piece of domestic plumbing. For obvious reasons, don't use gas pipes for earthing. Use something like Servisol Switchcleaner [or Isopropyl alcohol] and cotton earbuds to remove heavily-caked grime. Servisol Switchcleaner is also an ideal lubricant for fan motors. Never use WD-40 as it's a notorious dust magnet.
  14. Gadget Portal wrote: Not to single you out, but this is a terrible hobby to have if you're not running a gaming machine. Like it or not, it is a 3D game like the others on Steam, technologically speaking. If you can't/won't keep your computer up to par, it might be worth considering spending your time and money on other pursuits. Then again, I could simply be biased. I'm always super annoyed by builders that don't build on ultra graphics, then won't listen when the flaws are pointed out. Ah yes, you are biased, but I'm used to comments like yours. Digital social darwinism at its finest. I'll be around in SL for a long time to come.
  15. Herry, I hear your concerns about the *ahem* lack of propriety *ahem* of a significant proportion of steam users. My own guess is that the majority of that crowd will take one look at SL, laugh at the [by comparison] crude graphics and return to their "action-packed" FPS shooters. Who knows? We might get the crowd who are growing out of the action/quest gamer scene and looking for something new. Maybe SL will be repositioned as the 3D hangout for gamers. My main concern is that LL, in their rush to make SL appeal to gamers who are used to a much more polished visual experience, raise the hardware requirement bar so high that the default 'SL user experience' is only available to hard-core gamers with deep pockets for high-end graphics cards. For example I'm an oldbie resident and most likely will stick with SL to the bitter end however I already have to disable the current raft of visual shinies just to have a framerate that is in double digits. I suppose it really doesn't matter but as a part-time builder it helps to know what stuff I build is going to look like to people who have all the bells'n'whistles. For years I had no idea that a majority of my builds looked like radioactive glowing beacons simply because my graphics cards at the time couldn't process that information adequately. As a result I set [and enabled] light and glow at ridiculously high settings... so now I have to go back through years of work tweaking [or disabling!] light and glow settings all over again. *Sigh*
  16. You will need to get yourself a dedicated graphics card. Intel integrated graphics is fine for most run-of-the-mill stuff but falls over when faced with the workload the SL viewer throws at it. I use an Nvidia GT440 and manage to get a reasonable framerate so long as I disable the top-end features. YMMV.
  17. I'd like to see SoundFonts at the very least [or something similar] adopted. That way a content creator could upload keymapped wavesamples that could be triggered, looped and edited [envelope, filter, etc.]. That would open the door for more realistic in-world musical instruments as well in-world musical collaboration, composition and recording. SoundFonts are an old tried-and-tested technology created by Creative Labs so maybe the licensing wouldn't be too exorbitant.
  18. Hi! I've decided to reorganise the way I package my products and list them. As a result I now have 132 inactive items that I need to delete from my listings. Deleting them one by one is slow, slow, slow. I've tried selecting the checkboxes on the left column and the selecting the action 'delete' from the drop-down menu on the right but more often than not it just fails. Is there any way to delete them in 1 hit?
  19. As long as people are prepared to play the land flipper / baron game I don't see any reason for LL to change tack. Sure, the margins for land fliipers are probably negligible these days but they do pay tier on land.... which is what LL wants. I'm a mainlander surrounded by a sea of yellow. Some is abandoned land for sale at 1L$/m, some is waterfront land at a higher price [land flippers at work] and there's one huge parcel [3/4 of a sim] at 3.4 L$/m. There's also a fair amount of abandoned land that is not for sale for one reason or another. Maybe the Linden Homes mini-continents should have been bolted onto the existing continents. That would have made the migration from Linden Home rental to land owning a bit more obvious to new residents. It could still be done.

  21. Does anyone have a photo and dimensions of the Cake stage? I'm supposed to play there on the 20th but haven't been able to get any info from the organisers.
  22. You have my sympathies, Pac. I frequently get hit by the 'duplicate event' warning when listing my own events. I'm not sure how or why it happens but, as Dilbert suggested, a change of wording helps.
  23. IMHO the Grexit scenario is being overplayed by the Europhobic brigade who are milking the current *crisis* for all the publicity they can get out of it. In an interesting interview in The Guardian, Alexis Tsipras of SYRIZA made the surprising statement that the majority of Greeks do not want to leave the Euro... merely to renegotiate the terms of their membership. Interesting times ahead. Alexis Tsipras interview
