  1. I remember when Let's Dance came out on MTV. From there he had a constant string of great songs. It blew my mind that when I found out later that he had been making music much earlier and with completely different personalities. I don't think I've ever heard a Bowie song that I didn't like
  2. Looks good! Maybe you want to future proof by going to a gtx 970 to be oculus capable? Still, a good build and you can add more fans if needed.
  3. I think there is something to be said about the removal the in world store boxes. When a box was needed, you had to get a parcel in SL which led to the thinking , "I have a parcel, might as well make a store." Now it's easy to make a store on the marketplace and there is no incentive to make a store in world. The SL marketplace is convenient but it does seem to sidestep the entire vision behind SL which is to have a virtual world where you can do everything.
  4. How could anyone think of such doing such horrible things to the beloved characters of Sesame Street? Well I can understand Elmo but the rest? No. You sir need help.
  5. Also try going to the hardware graphics settings in SL and try turning off the options there like anisotropic filtering or vbo. I remember one of those used to cause lines.
  6. I get what the OP is asking. When I occasionally try out an MMO game I like it to have a somewhat active community and not a ghost town or one that will be shut down soon. Second Life? It's really hard to say. We are approaching a precipice and Sansar could cause a mass migration but we just don't know. Maybe upon seeing that Sansar is unsuitable as an SL upgrade, people will double down on SL. But the future is shrouded in mist.
  7. We seem to agree that SL is not a democracy. What type of government does SL actually have? A one party state system like China?
  8. Ahaha! I understand what you are asking for. I've tried mesh head demos before but I've never tried to make them round like that. If no one comes up w/ a definite answer, you'll probably have to wander the world looking for mesh head demos.
  9. That pic is a regular SL head. Just fiddle with the sliders and you can make a round head. There's actually one slider that changes the head shape between square and round. The chin depth looks very shallow too.
  10. Ebbe would have to be taking some seriously strong substances to hand over control of SL to a group of residents. I'd vote for this guy though.
  11. There's still the HTC Vive and the Sony Playstation VR to wait for. Oculus is a brand new company w/ no deep hardware development infrastructure. They had to hire everyone, research and prototype everything from zero. HTC is a large multinational electronics manufacturer from Taiwan. Sony is no slouch in the world of electronics manufacturing either. Both have operating revenue in billions. The Oculus is owned by Facebook, a social media company, hardly known for gaming. HTC is partnering up with Valve, the creators of HalfLife and the STEAM online game store. Sony has.. 34 million Playstaion 4s sold as of this month.
  12. I was surprised at the high pc requirements. The nvidia gtx 970 needed is $340 right now. That's not mid range, that's high end pricing. Even the i5 needed is a high end i5 that runs for $200 right now. Just counting those pieces and the rift gets you $1,140 down the hole. Also, no laptops can run this. No Macs. No Linux. The audience of Oculus users is going to be rather small and homogenous.
  13. You can get a mini atx= half tower? The ATX= full tower is not necessary. I think there is a case between the half tower and the itx. That would be OK too. The itx is seriously squeezed together. It uses full desktop components and not the power sipping cool running laptop components. But, I have had a 3d gaming laptop as well. It had the same summer overheat problem.I don't know why people get laptops for 3d.
  14. I would not get a mini itx case unless your computer room is below 65 degrees F all year round. I live in California and have had an itx case running SL. It overheated in the summer months even with the the case cover completely removed with internals open to the air. It started to overheat all throughout the year eventually. The itx has almost no internal airflow and the components are so close together that they radiate heat onto each other. It actually works fine without running any 3d games. So for standard computer use the case will work.
  15. Yes, you can use a sandbox. I have my own rented parcel and I still use a sandbox to unpack things once in a while.
  16. The Oculus Rift VR headset is pre-order priced at $599. The i5-5490 currently sells for about $200. The Nvidia gtx 970 sells for about $340. Adding all the extra parts for a full desktop computer would bring the total price up to about $1,500. Quite an expensive system! Fortunately pc component prices always go down and the rift requirements will remain the same.
  17. Pre orders can be made on January 6th. I'm not pre odering but I will be checking on upgrading my desktop computer to be able to use it.
  18. Would taking a motion sickness medicine like dramamine help w/ SIS? Is this SIS linked to regular motion sickness? i.e. A person who normally gets motion sickness would most likely get SIS? How long does it take to get acclimated to an HMD if one does have these problems? A week? Months?
  19. I think that Sansar is focused on bringing back one aspect of SL that was popular back when I joined in 2006 and that's the corporate sponsored 'experiences' built by professional design teams. The audience for these experiences will be people who are not savvy with virtual worlds. No small merchants, no fashionistas and no homemakers... until later. Remember how it was in SL back then when we would have all the real life companies opening up sims and getting real world press? Journalists would write about it and people who heard about SL on the radio or read about it in a magazine would sign in and see what they could see. Sansar would be like that except somehow these 'experiences' would have a paywall, people would pay for it and LL would get a piece. That's the business plan I think. LL looked at what they currently have working well in SL : a thriving marketplace supported by a large population of merchants and consumers who are experienced virtual world residents. LL said, 'We already have SL. Why make Sansar exactly like SL which would only cannibalize it? Why not make Sansar something that has pretty much died out in SL, which is the whole corporate sponsored virtual world experience thingy? No cannibalization right? Just as SL has always been an evolving virtual world, Sansar can eventually evolve to support a marketplace, homeowners and savvy residents in the future. Until then, those people have SL.' I don't know if LL is thinking that at all but it seems to be the direction that Sansar is going.
  20. I put together a little picture that shows some steps to changing into a mesh avatar. It doesn't include all the things one can do with mesh but you can see at which point certain things can be done. Here is the post link. https://community.secondlife.com/t5/Your-Avatar/Steps-to-changing-your-avatar-from-starter-to-mesh-clothing/m-p/2953459
  21. The most common abuse I'd have to say is that people create badly shapen avatars and wear the worst clothing imaginable. It's almost criminal the way they look.
  22. Happy Holidays Madelaine! Happy Holidays to y'all.
  23. Honestly, having tried the Maitreya and Slink bodies on two different avatars, I've come to the realization that the mesh body isn't that necessary. Most of the time, you'll be wearing mesh clothes and mesh clothes look the same whether you have a mesh body or not. The only parts of the mesh body that show often when you wear clothes are the hands, feet, and sometimes the forearms and legs below the knees. Mesh hands and feet do definitely improve your look because system hands and feet are terrible. But the mesh arms and legs aren't noticeably different from the system parts. The Maitreya and Slink also use the system head so you still look the same above the neck. So to summarize, with a system body you can still wear the same mesh clothes as everyone else and look almost exactly the same as most people w/ a mesh body. The only catch is that you do want mesh hands and feet. If you are a model, need to show a lot of skin, or have some body type where the system shape gets very angular, then certainly consider the mesh bodies.
  24. How old is your computer? Could be the tiny battery in the computer. It lasts a very long time hence my asking about the age of the computer.
