  1. There was a problem with the Marketplace on the 19th. Maybe this was what caused it? You don't have be logged in in-world, but you do have to be logged in to the Marketplace, in order to make purchases. Your purchases will be be waiting in inventory for when you next log in in-world. Safest way to find them is to use the Recent tab of inventory, making sure that its looking at enough days back to find them. Use the Custom function to set the number of hours or days it will look back through, if necessary. (That's in Firestorm viewer. I think other viewers work similarly.) I think you'll probably be well aware of all this, having only been away for 3 years - not much has changed in that area. Whenever things like this go wrong, its always a good idea to have a quick look at the Second Life Status page. Here you will find out details of anything not working right (providing that they've been reported!). https://secondlife-status.statuspage.io/ PS; I've just seen the time you posted, and the previous post to yours. The Status page may well have not been showing anything wrong at that time. Mar 19, 13:23 PDT
  2. I did edit my post to reflect that, thanks. It was largely the post by @brodiac90 , pointing out, quite correctly within the ToS, that there was nothing wrong with child avatars being on a an adult area, that prompted me to sound a RL warning. I am aware that Anime has a complex set of sub-classes; kodomo, shojo and shonen probably being the most represented in SL avatars. Maybe there are avatars that fit the many other classes but the ones I have observed in SL generally fit the child classes. Don’t take me wrong; I mean no disrespect to Anime devotees. I’m merely pointing out the possible wide divide that exists between what some cultures think is acceptable and others that don’t, and the perils that may lie ahead. I happen to be be a citizen of a country that will happily hang its politicians, knights and military leaders out to dry on the flimsiest of evidence, and need to take exceptional care in this respect.
  3. Yes..... here we go go again! So, just what is the problem? It is the child, or child-like, appearance, that's what! Anime characters, in addition to obvious child characters, are typical examples that can cause problems. Many people simply regard anime characters as “cute little avatars with appealing eyes”, and conveniently ignore the fact that they are representations of children. (Anime characters are, by the design of the genre, intended to look young. Even the very few adult anime characters that have been created are deliberately made to look child-like. The entire genre revolves around the concept of children doing amazing, super-human things to beat the villain, save the world.... or whatever. Therefore, the vast majority of anime characters ARE children by definition, and the few adult characters that exist still look like children.) The presence of children, or child-like, avatars in an adult environment IS permitted under the ToS *provided that they are not in the vicinity of adult activities taking place*. That is all very well so far as the ToS are concerned, but what happens when you consider the very onerous and far-reaching RL laws that deal with child pornography? The RL laws pertaining to Child Pornography in many countries (particularly western ones) extend specifically to imagery, and is an area very actively policed. The penalties for breaching this legislation are extremely heavy; large fines and/or prison sentences, plus being placed on a Sex Offender’s Register, being the outcome. The ONLY way to stay on the safe side of the RL law, in environments where adult activities are provided for, is to not permit children or child-like avatars access at all. If you are involved in the running of an adult-activities permitted area, and are a resident in RL of a country that has adopted stringent measures to prevent child pornography, ignore this at your peril. Have a child avatar as a manager of an adult activities area? By all means do. Ever let them show up on site? NO! On the other hand, if its just "family activities" on an M rated site, what's the problem?
  4. Despite the high number of scripts, that region has been ticking along for a very long time without going into breakdown. Sure, script performance has been on the slow side due to to the inevitably low scripts run percentage, but I'd never seen any sim statistics figures go so haywire before. @Qie Niangaopointed out earlier that this sort of thing has happened before, with everything going loopy-loop, only to be fixed by re-starts. Coincidentally, a region, that I used to rent a parcel on, ran consistently with 16500 active scripts without breaking down like this. Looking around the grid, you can find many regions that are running with very high active scripts numbers. There's no doubt, from what I've gleaned from discussions on this forum, that sim performance starts to fall off when active scripts exceed 4500 - 5000, but they keep running. All that happens, as @CoffeeDujourpoints out, is that script execution just gets queued to subsequent frames (or is this, too, another bit of stated fact that isn't a fact any more?). Anyway, thanks to everybody so far for your contributions. Every little bit helps towards my scant understandings of these things.
  5. Before I TP to a place that I know has a teleport landing-shifter, I type "WHEEEEEEE---Hehe!!" into local local chat, ready for the moment the shifter starts. Its caused the odd "LOL" in reply, now and again 😁
  6. Thanks @Qie Niangao. I'd completely missed the high PumpIO figure. PumpIO still seems to be a bit of a black art! I was also very interested to pick up on the issues of phantom scripts still lurking on the simulator, and causing problems. Thanks for those pointers.
  7. The real fun starts with a good first name. I've come up with:- Cosmic Conundrum Brokan Dismantled Tart Huntsman Thoughtful Littlepaws Bossy Nova The last three are proving harder; so far I have;- Mad Ravenhurst Bumpy Wumpkins Compel Yeetly Any further offers?
  8. Just to brush-up on my Latin skills, I ran that through Google Translate:- "Enomine to the spirit of the holy fillet" Bless!
  9. The readings shown in the screenshot I took are really weird. A Total Frame Time of 284ms? Simulation Time 109ms? A Script Time of 33ms, and even a gnat's whisker of Spare Time, but nothing relying on scripts working..... What on earth was going on? Sure, later that day things improved. I guess a re-start fixed it all. Nevertheless, I've never seen anything like that bad before, or such weird readings.
  10. Thanks. @bigmoe Whitfield. This is a full region called "Space", not an openspace region. I think the way I phrased that might have been confusing!
  11. After three teleport failures earlier today, I started to look at the Sim Statistics of where I was arriving. This was Space region, approximately 8 hours ago. No wonder I couldn't move!
  12. Recently read, from one of the major land owners' information about their rental parcels, was this:- "SL announced there are no more class server anymore from a hardware point of view. The regions are routinely examined by Linden engineers and heavier use regions are moved to more robust hardware. This happens behind the scenes automatically." "Routine examinations".... "automatically".... ? Does anyone have any information or comments about this? Its the first time I've heard anything like this.
  13. Yes, yes, yes and yes! I have the radio series on audio cassette. Large glass of rioja criaza in hand, headphones on bonce, and I'm in there with them. Delicious 😆 What was that about peeves.... ?
  14. Many thanks for that, @Qie Niangao. I'd always assumed that the figures that pop up in the Best Rate Buy section represented a "suggestion" rather than, as I now know, a value based on historic trading. Having read your information above, I can see that the value that pops up in the Best Rate Buy might meet with quite rapid success, or maybe never be met for months! That all answers my question perfectly! /me sneaks away miserably, annoyed at her lack of understanding, muttering, "They're still "default" values though....."
  15. Is there a way to stop the edit menu always opening on top of the item you're trying to edit? If not, its on my wishlist!
  16. I find the Collapse button a Godsend! But, before closing the Inventory, I click on the primary "Inventory" folder so that the topic folders list themselves again, ready for the next time you access the Inventory.
  17. When you first open the "Buy Linden Dollars" function, you are presented with two sections - the Instant Buy (market rate) section and the Best Rate Buy (limit buy) section. The Market Rate section already has a default selection of $L 2500 inserted (the market rate value in $US shown alongside); the Limit Rate section has default values of $L 2500 and a corresponding $US value at typically around 4% higher than market rate. Right now the market rate is $L 2500 = $US 9.63, i.e. a rate of 260. The Limit rate has defaulted to an offer of $L 2500 = $US 9.26, i.e. a rate of 270 (which is approx.4% higher). You can, of course, make your own offer by changing the exchange rate value in the Instant Buy section, and chance your luck. My question referred to sticking with the default rate offered in the Instant Buy section.
  18. Not quite. Let me put my question a different way: Has anyone ever successfully bought Linden dollars at the default Limit Buy rate?
  19. Has anyone ever got the transaction, having selected a Limit Buy (which defaults to around 4% above the Market Rate), to actually complete? I tried it once, got fed up after 5 weeks, cancelled the bid and bought at the Market Rate. I've never bothered since. Afterthought: Maybe I tried to be even greedier and selected an even higher rate than the default. I can't remember now.
  20. I've no idea what your budget will be, but, if you can afford it, definitely get an SSD to hold your operating system, programs and SL's caches, in addition to a standard type hard drive to hold all your other stuff. I got a noticeable improvement in performance that way. Whatever GPU you get, think memory here, too. @bigmoe Whitfield's recommendation above is a pretty good start. If you are prepared to spend more, look for a better GPU with more onboard memory. People never seem to realise how much memory gets mopped up by Windows 10 and other things that's nice to have running right from the start. Right now I have two instances of Chrome running and 7.1 GB of memory are being used! There won't be much left for things like SL if you've only got 8 GB installed, so think 16 GB as a good start. I've also found that buying off-the-shelf "gaming" computers, which is where you'll find the sort of specs you're looking for, will often have a lot of unwanted features (that you'll be paying for) like colour-changing keyboards, selectable case-lighting etc, often at the expense of better hardware. Have a look at the specialist pc dealers who will build a computer to exactly your specs - or, even cheaper, maybe put one together yourself?
