You pay less rent for a skyplatform because you are shairing the same lot, as well as the tiers for that lot, wtih other people. Your landlord has mulitple platforms stacked over one lot. When you own land you are responsible for all of tiers. But you also get a lot more freedom to do what you'd like on the land. A landlord does not necesarily have to "stack" platforms one above the other to offer a lower price. Cost per sqm goes down as you own larger areas. Leaving the cost of premium membership out of the equation, if you own a full SIM on mainland, your cost for 1024 is roughly $3.00 per month. If it is an Estate, the cost for that same area would be about $4.60 per month. For an individual wanting to own their own 1024, tier is $8.00 per month. So a landlord can rent a 1024 for less than $8.00 per month and still make money. This is one of the reasons why Linden Homes has been a boon to LL, even though they have really hurt the small parcel rental market . LL is making more money per sqm than they were from the land lords. That is only true for mainland. For private estates the cost per square meter stays the same (until you get into the dozens or hundreds of regions in which case you might be able to negotiate a volume discount). Linden homes, yes. Of course they've caused a shift as well, towards larger mainland parcels which lowers server load (I guess) and makes things look more consistent as well on a small scale (now if only people were to become considerate of others and stop putting up "privacy walls" and security orbs or other banlines that block passage for travelers).

Plus when it comes down to it, the game still lags anyway. They'd make more money charging less because so many more people would get sims. I'm so annoyed with this damn company I wish they'd just go bankrupt already so somebody would finally make something better. Why would someone need to wait for LL to go bankrupt before they made something better? If LL is gouging us as bad as you infer, then it should be no problem for someone to step in and undersell LL. Oh, and for the record I am just a lowly "Member." Linden Lab doesn't seem to like Martians. even better, it's supposedly "very easy", so one has to wonder why OP is still here and hasn't already set up that megasuccessful competitor that's draining the SL grid of a million users a day.

Doubt we'll see any of them eating that crow they've served up for themselves though. Glad to see the TPE that really care are working through the regulations to continue service for those who need it. I knew they would. they're all prewriting the post floods for next week when server side avatar baking goes life and their phoenix or v1 "suddenly" no longer renders any avatars including themselves, never mind that that's been announced months ago and new viewer versions have been available for download for weeks, with the major ones urging their users to upgrade (or even automatically doing so in the case of V3).
  5. Myra Wildmist wrote: thank you everyone. I think I understand what everyone is saying. I understand the issue with attachment points and the clothing being rigged to those attachment points on a default avatar. That makes sense. But what happens to a mod rigged item when it's rezzed on the floor? Would I be able to resize it? I assume if I could it would snap back to its intended rigging when I put it on, but I'm just curious. (I tried to do this in-world, but I didn't have any modifiable rigged items.) @Gaia, thank you. That's very helpful info. you will find that you can't rez a rigged item on the floor as it can't exist in world except linked to an avatar attachment point

  7. sculpties have far higher server impact than their 1PE count indicates. They can be incredibly laggy. But in order to prevent half the sims in SL getting returned when true PE is indicated for them (which could be as much as >100 for a single sculpt now counted as 1), LL can't change that now. and no, clothing layers can't work with mesh, ever, as they modify the SL mesh itself, which is hidden by a mesh avatar. There's no way around that, it's the way things work.

Well, this why I used word clarify, instead of disprove. Anyway, it's semantics.. The point is that some people here on the forums are basically lying to people by purposefully not telling all information that they should know. yes, you are a prime example...
  9. Kenbro Utu wrote: I think you need to look up the word "myth." All your examples did was show the limitations of the statements, but did not disprove any of them. in fact OP is just another of the constant stream of idiots who want to harm LL... Everything OP writes is either an outright lie or at best a half truth.
  10. and oh, remember that SL has been dead since before the public beta started, if the idiots are to be believed who prowl the internet proclaiming such (including these forums).
  11. Abigail Merlin wrote: true it used to be that abandoned land at 1 L$ per sqm was a steal and the average was about 10 L$ per sqm, right now 1 L$ per sqm land can sit for months. that;s because all the decent land, decent size, shape, etc. is gobbled up by the land barrons in minutes (I guess they have bots prowling the grid looking for land for sale), then rented out or put up for private sale at heavily inflated prices. In fact I've strong indication that some are gaming the system by hiring griefers to attack people who own real estate in areas they want to buy, right after making them "an offer you can't refuse" to sell at 0.1 or lower.

  16. no, a bot would still not have access to group member lists. The ONLY way to get those is to open the group window, join the group (which might not be possible, free, or a good idea), and write down every name in the member list. And of course repeat that at regular intervals as group membership changes over time.
  17. and you won't like v3 any more if you can't get used to the minute changes in the user interface between FS 4.3 and 4.4 as all those changes are direct reflections of the V3 user interface.
  18. Coby Foden wrote: jwenting wrote: only solution might be rigged mesh nails, and even then I doubt you can completely avoid it. Even rigged nails would not work. Avatar fingers don't have bones in them to which the nails would need to be rigged for the nails to work perfectly. The fingers move by avatar mesh morphs and it is not possible to rig anything to morphs. So now the only solution is to have a script which will lock the fingers to be always in the same position. Maybe after ten years the avatar will have evolved so that it has bones in every single finger... :matte-motes-big-grin: There's now some rigged mesh hands that come with nails, those I guess would work but you probably need a hud or something else scripted to change the pose of the hand (which'd most likely end up flipping textures so another set of faces becomes visible).
  19. overall it's pretty good, some places and groups are pretty bad. Always been that way, always will be, and what's good and bad will always shift.
  20. and of course such settings will destroy whatever immersive environment a sim owner has created for his region, and may well interfere with texturing other sim owners have created for their region to look the way they want with the default windlight settings. Those settings too will only influence how you see yourself.
  21. only solution might be rigged mesh nails, and even then I doubt you can completely avoid it.
  22. I've actually left groups where they started demanding we spend x amount of time per day on mindless stuff just so we could stay members. And it was mindless stuff, these were roleplay groups that demanded we send in roleplay logs of on average 2 hours a day as a condition of being a member of the group which would then be graded (yes kids, teacher is checking your work) and you'd still get ejected if it wasn't good enough. Of course during the hours I was usually online there were very few others in the group owned sim (they were online, just elsewhere) except weekends, so I'd have to roleplay solo, emoting volumes in exquisite detail and hope a moderator found them "good enough". And then I got hit with a long term illness that restricted my time seriously, so I couldn't even be online that much most days. Lost a lot of good friends because I could not do the mindless chores the group demanded from me, so nice... But if that's the kind of treatment you want, go right ahead.
  23. Perrie Juran wrote: There is no need for you to apologize. We would all welcome a Viable solution. Maybe more than the fact that they are getting griefed is the fact that these Venue Owners feel like LL is not do anything to address the Issue. When they see the same Griefer Account continue to act with impunity it boggles their brains. Especially when at some Venues it has gone beyond Griefing to Extortion. the only viable solution is social, users stopping to pay any attention to griefers whatsoever, except for reporting them dilligently to those responsible for ousting them. Users should not create countless forum threads about it, should not abandon their land if they get attacked (yes, it's happening, I've some indication at least some griefers are actually paid by unscrupulous land barrons to drive people off their land even), and do nothing else that gives the griefer the satisfaction of seeing his actions mentioned as such only vindicates him.
  24. Jadeclaw Denfu wrote: Qie Niangao wrote: "What if connection to Agni were only possible via registered TPVs? " Doesn't work. Since it is software, a registered viewer can be spoofed. There is only one workable solution: Fix the server code. The server code should block all unauthorized accesses, regardless of the viewer used. There is a rule for server side web applications: Never trust input from the client side, always clean it up on the server side before handing it over to the application/data process. and the simplest, indeed only, way to do that is to create a closed viewer that needs to use a complex algorithm to verify its credentials with the server every few minutes at random intervals while logged in. That means NO TPVs at all, only 1 official client stuffed to the gills with security code that detects hacking, making it extremely slow. And even then griefers will find ways around it, as they do and have done with every single online game/community that has ever existed.

GothGirl Demonia wrote: Hopefully Entropia, or a New Version/MMO similar to APB, and Second Life will come out sooner or later that offers different fantasy RP experience, but without all the problems SL has and using Real Money to fuel the economy. Actually EVE has done this. ALL MMOs thrive on real money to fuel them, get used to it. Either you have to buy currency with real money like in SL, or you have to buy in-game items with real money as most Korean and many other MMOs do, or you have to pay subscription fees that give you access to content that lets you generate in-game currency (more rapidly), or a combination of all of those. It's how the game companies make their income. Even Blizzard has now embraced that model in WoW (where they've reworked the trial version into a limited access unlimited time version that can only hold a small amount of resources) and Diablo 3 (where you have to pay real money to trade in game items between avatars).
