  1. You will need to alpha out both arms and use prims to re-create the arm that is not missing. If it's just a hand you can get some good mesh hands, but I don't believe anyone has done whole arms (yet). There are sculpted ones though (one of my alts has a missing arm and his "good" arm is a sculpt from Chakra Nova).
  2. I don't run contests at my club but I've been to a few places that have them and I've seen this trick. Best advice I can give: - Require group membership to enter contest or vote. Don't give out group tags in the last hour. OR - ask a joining fee. - Require contest entry to vote (this is the key one - it means they can't mass-tp in a bunch of friends and alts unless they're already in the group AND in theme AND entered into the contest) - Boot anyone not in-theme and dis-count their votes - Close entry 30 minutes before voting starts You may also want to make a "no afk" rule as well, and boot anyone who isn't participating in local chat.
  3. Just to add to point 4 that no-one's picked up on yet. You can get demos of some clothing items to try on - usually this will be mesh items, so you can ensure they fit your shape. Hair almost always has demos, and shoes often do too. They often have "Demo" written on them, or on a floating sign. However if the thing you are wearing is a flat box or sign with a picture on it, it's a box and the actual wearable items are inside. You will need to unpack it first. Here's how: 1. Go to a place that allows building. Your home, a sandbox or some other build-enabled area. 2. Drag the item from your inventory to the floor. 3. Right-click it and choose "Open". Wait for the dialog box to fill with the contents. 4. Click "Copy to Inventory". Ensure that the "wear now" box is UN-checked otherwise you'll find yourself wearing the contents of the box - and NOTHING else. 5. You now have a new folder at the bottom of your inventory which contains the wearable items. You can delete the box on the floor (don't leave litter!)
  4. This was me in my first week in 2008, all in freebies. That look didn't last long. But this was my first avatar, back in 2006. So, so dreadful...
  5. You don't need a particular windlight setting to improve your avatar. Just ensure that Ambient light is higher than Sun/Moon light. That will eliminate any nasty shadows and make it un-necessary to wear a facelight.
  6. I have several alts. Some are roleplay characters, some were experiments (failed or not) in a particular "look", some were made just to try out changes to the new-user experience.
  7. My main av (this one) appears to be about 25, so it is about 20 years younger than RL me, and looks nothing ike the way I look in RL. I made an alt to copy my RL appearance as closely as possible and I hated it.

My alts already seem to have lives and personalities all their own, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they started talking back to me.
  9. That error message is what I get when my crappy internet connection is being particularly crappy. It would also explain your error message about the viewer not being able to find phoenixviewer.com. Rebooting the router sometimes helps, particularly if you're on a dynamic IP; the reset will (usually) give you a new IP address which sometimes helps to resolve DNS mapping failures. If that doesn't help and the problem persists, maybe a call to your ISP support to find out if they are having issues?
  10. I use the built in AO from Firestorm with animations purchased individually, mostly from Vista or Cova.
  11. I haven't had this happen to me since I used an early version of Phoenix, and the only person I know of who it still happens to, is still using an early version of Phoenix. Coincidence? Maybe.

  13. Apparently it's showing in the 1.23 viewer's old style search but not in web search. *bangs head against brick wall*
  14. How on earth do you get a parcel or a group to show in Search? I paid for listing 24 hours ago but it's still not showing up, even if I type in the exact name of the parcel. Its the same for the group - just not showing at all. And yes I did scroll right to the end of the results. The parcel is 2048sqm and on mainland, show in search is ticked anf paid-for. The group is open enrolment and again, show in search is ticked. I must have missed something - what did I miss?

One thing I want to do, if nobody's done it yet, is make a wheelchair or scooter with a sitting walk, so that the avvy moves forward along the ground and the animation is not in the legs but rather in the wheels, steering, arms if it's a manual wheelchair, etc. I haven't tried one but I believe the wheelchairs on Virtual Ability Island have what you need. And they're free too. My disability is also not noticeable to others (it's visual, not visible) so I wouldn't incorporate it into my avatar. But going back to the OP I think it's not that strange to want to reflect yourself in your avatar in such a way.

  17. My SL partner and I exchanged RL pics just a week or two ago, but before we did so we both discussed this possibility. We also decided not to tell each other what we thought (however that particular agreement lasted about ten minutes). We are both somewhat insecure of our RL appearance for various reasons but we were both happy with what we saw. It was a big risk though, and I guess it could easily have ended with one or both of us not finding the other attractive.
  18. I dunno, I found it really difficult to read, and basically had to try to transpose it letter by letter to make any sense of it. Then again I have a visual-processing disability which probably contributes to the difficulty. I wonder if dyslexic people find it harder too? Either that, or I'm just too old and un-1337.
  19. My very first taste of SL was primarily as a roleplayer, with an avatar who is not me. I ended up doing very little roleplay and quickly realised I needed an avatar to represent my RL self.

    Alts

I have half a dozen alts and all they do is steal my L$ to buy clothes and hair and stuff. I'm not secretive about my alts and my friends know who they are. The reason alts are disliked by some is that people use them for deception, like spying on bf/gf etc. Actually come to think of it, one of my alts is older than me. That makes ME an alt... :matte-motes-agape:
  21. Okay yes I know Firefox is better. And indeed the process works fine (for now) in Firefox. But in IE9, the "Confirm" button on the 3rd page, where you enter and confirm card details, does nothing. I know IE is not necessarily the best browser to use but it's still the most common one out there in the world. I wonder how long it'll be before your system doesn't work in Firefox either? I'm honestly not holding my breath. Each time I try to buy L$ I have to worry that this might be the time it stops working and I'll have to give up my land because you just make it harder and harder for me to give you my money. PS: auto-filling in the credit card details form with my avatar name is the dumbest idea I ever saw. Please, LL, fix these issues.

  23. I wear LeLutka, because it's one of the few makers that do a skin suitable for red-haired guys. A lot of good ones have already been mentioned; Belleza, Signature, Redgrave. No-one's mentioned Dutch Touch yet; those are nice (one of my alts wears one of theirs). Ispachi is another good quality but not-so-well known one. Also Cheerno.
