Dear Valentina,

Yes, there is indeed a way to earn L$ without becomng an escort. The SL economy is huge. L$ fall from the sky like snow. Stick out your tongue and taste it.

Your best bet for earning L$ without any upfront investment is money trees. You should be able to snag L$1,000 in a month. It's far easier though to earn money if you're willing to spend some upfront.

Good luck. I like ambitious women.

I wouldn't have described camping as earning money. It used to be, when campers gave something back in return for the money - presence on the land, which counted for traffic and was beneficial to the landowner. But that's against the ToS these days, so camping is no longer "earning" as such - it's free handouts. Just sayin'

There are some ways to earn money without becoming an escort. Pole-dancing, hosting in clubs, stuff like that.

  1. Go to NCI and/or other helper organisations
  2. Do some classes
  3. Enter the competitions/games
  4. Win L$250 for 30 or 40 minutes effort and learn skills too
  5. Sell the things you've learnt to make on marketplace
  6. Earn enough from competitions & sales to pay rent
  7. Sell the things you've learnt to make in your own shop
  8. Earn enough from competitions, ecommerce and in-world to get rich
  9. Teach classes of your own for cL$500/hour + tips
  10. Take commissions from adoring public if they're paying enough
  11. Relax by the pool again
  12. Tomorrow the world ...

Just like RL the sex-trade in SL is mainly for people with no other skill/ambition and those that enjoy it for its own sake.

More normal people get jobs as DJs, customer-service staff, land-managers, etc.

The most fun (arguably) is when you have the creative skills to make and sell your own things

Not stripping? hrmph!

Which reminded me of a conversation I had the other day. When I started in SL, my female friend, who introduced me to it, avoided nudity. She said, "I know they are only pixels, but they are MY pixels", which has always tickled me. I look at it the other way round - I know they are my pixels, but they are ONLY pixels. It's interesting how we think of our avatars.

  • 5 years later...

I certainly haven't heard that area camping is illegal. In fact it is still listed on the SL wiki as a way to "earn" money. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/How_to_Earn_Linden_Dollars_in_Second_Life#Camping

Granted the wikis are often out of date but there are still listing for camping for money in search.  BUT there is certainly much LESS camping than nine or ten years ago. And the folks camping DO give something back. Even though traffic is not a big part of search engine criteria in some areas, it is indeed important in PLACES search.

The trick will be finding places as there really aren't that many. If you can do the money trees and they are still around (have no clue) then that is indeed a fun way to get some Lindens and it also helps with SL skills like camming :D.

You can also earn money at The Realms -- just not as much as in previous times as the blues and green show up VERY RARELY.

Is camping not allowed , or allowed ?

It's allowed. There used to be a lot of it when there was a gain (traffic for the search system) to be had for the landowners, but that was killed off by LL when they brought in a different search system that wasn't based solely on traffic. So, since there was no longer any gain to be had, the landowners stopped putting camping on their land. LL also brought in new rules concerning the gaming of traffic, which made it 'illegal' to have camping on land that shows in search. There is still some around, as Chic described, but it doesn't have the same impact for landowners any more, so it's almost disappeared.

As far as we users know, traffic is no more important in the Places search rankings than it is in the rankings of any other search. Yes, the traffic is stated in the listings, but the rankings are based on many factors, with traffic either being a very small one of them, or not a factor at all any more.

Example: in a Places search I just did, a place with only 18 traffic ranks higher than a place with 8220 traffic.

The reason why very low traffic places, such as single figure and zero amounts, tend to rank further down the results than those with more traffic is not because the lack of traffic significantly lowers their rankings compared to places with higher traffic. It's the other way round. They have very small amounts of traffic because they don't rank high enough in the search results to be readily seen, so people don't tend to go to them from the results. Instead they go to the higher ranked places, because they are on-screen and look as if they might suit what's being searched for, which, of course, pushes up their traffic. The rich get richer while the poor remain poor.

it's around, lots less than in the past.... BUT still not worth the time :

my body costs 3000, , my head 5000, my skinappliers 1000, my clothes at least 1000, my AO 2000 .... if i went camping for that i would be spoiling 400 hours ... with a average of 3 hours a day online...lets say two hours clubbing, home and friends, and one hour camping.. oh wow, a new outfit once a year.

I forgot my home.. 1500 weekly, all the hours in a year wouldn't be enough to get that all by camping.. lets use alts...oh wait, now my electricity bill is higher than the profit.... grrr still no new clothes...

Thank you whoever, for resurrecting this zombie thread, it made me laugh...

I particularly enjoyed the post from some clueless fossil, stating that you could make a whole 1000 ls a month spending all day looking for money trees. Those damn trees only payed out if somebody else had payed in and nobody ever did, hell I can only think of one tree back in 2012 that ever had any money in it ever.

Dont see that many camping chairs anymore either, and the few you do tend to pay in goods now because people assume that "camping for cash is illegal".

For tyhose that don't want to beg on a dance pole or peddle their asses on a sim corner, Linden Realms is the place to go, with practice, 2 hours a day will earn you 700 ls a week, and that's enough once you've got your basic avatar sorted, to pay for a modest house/skybox rental and still leave a bit to save up for a new outfit every month.

The higher the traffic, the higher the placement in PLACES. It's as simple as that. I did a ton of searches and all of them had the highest traffic places at the top. Hence, traffic gets you to the top of the list in PLACES.  People naturally look at the top of the list as the wander through the listings.  This has nothing to do with other searches, only when searching within PLACES.

While you CAN change the listing to alphabetical, I suspect most "smart" searchers will look at the most popular places first. Much easier in long lists.

Example of two basic search terms.

You're using an age old search system, Chic. It's been called the 'legacy search' for years. Yes, that used to be how a Places search was ranked. It was why camping was all over the place. Things moved on from that system many years ago, although you can opt to still use it in some 3rd party viewers. In fact, I used to log my alt in with Singularity because I could set it to return the legacy profiles.

So, with the age old system, traffic was everything for the Places rankings, but for the normal system, that's been in use for many years, and I believe is the system that most people use, the effect of traffic on the search results is how I described it earlier.

ETA: The legacy system is why I wrote a system of using almost 40 bots to keep as many avatars counting for traffic on my store's land as possible. By logging bots in and out as required, it ensured that there were always 2 or 3 spaces in the sim for people arrive. It was a beautiful system that worked perfectly, and the day after I'd finished its final touches, LL banned traffic bots! lol

I actually laughed whey banned them - because it was literally the day after I'd put the finishing touches to my system :)  I wasn't annoyed at all, and I was perfectly happy that they did it. The only reason I got into bots is because the opposition was doing it. I wasn't even aware of the possibility until someone explained to me what was happening. But I'm pleased to say that I outdid them :D
