In a nutshell. Im an avid paragraph RP'er here in Second Life. Im in the habit of posting long descriptive paragraphs in local chat. I understand that if I write something that is long it usually divides it into sections and it does a double post (which is normal) but as of recently I've had this problem where I post a lengthy paragraph and the last part shows first and the first shows last, so they're reversed. I've no clue how to fix this, I been in preferences trying to figure out if it's something to do with the way chat works or is it lag. I have no answers. So if anyone knows about this please let me know, because its driving me nuts . I've tried the usual fixes, clean installs, resets, detaching objects and nothing. Same ol thing.

You should be aware that a chat message may be no longer than 1024 bytes (roughly 1024 characters), so you should always be tailoring your messages to fit within that limit. I suggest cutting your paragraphs into bite-sized chunks and sending them sequentially rather than trying to choke the system with messages that are too long to handle.

There is no setting to solve the problem. You are dealing with CHAT LAG.

The packets of chat leave your computer in the order you type them. They travel to a chat server. The chat server sees packets of text. They are NOT serialized. Your packets and everyone else's packets are flowing into the same multiple-server system. Your first packet may land in one server and the second in another. Depending on the load on the individual servers the packet landing in the least busy server may leave first. So, they can arrive in other people's viewers in reverse order. 

There is nothing to be done but assure your packets of text fit in a single packet. Even then the order in which people respond can get out of order. We see that all the time in busy groups and busy Nearby local chat.

It was way worse a couple of years ago. Chat actually works pretty well these days.

Perhaps because i'm no rp'er... but shouldn't the "flow"of the rp , the surrounding, setting, company... and so make the description? If i had to read whole stories to keep up i  would run within a few minutes.

I have to agree with Alwin on this.  You can roleplay without having to write whole paragraphs.  And in my opinion, it's a lot more effective that way.  I generally alternate speech with emotes, e.g.,

/me slaps her forehead and rolls her eyes

Oh golly, he's been typing for ten minutes.  Myrnath, dear, would you please hit Enter and let us get on with it?

/me crosses her arms, taps her foot, and gives you a mild glare of exasperation.

Look dude, I asked for an answer on a technical question. If I wanted pointers on how to make my posts I'd go elsewhere. If you're gonna be a dick about it why even bother "answering"

Thank You Rolig, you're help has been noted. It's been roughly a good few months since the question; perhaps I exaggerated on the "lengthy" description posts, but anyhow. I still have the issue, but I've managed. I've done a bit of investigating and I assure you, long posts of about 4 paragraphs in one sitting come out fine and in order from other users, I was able to do this myself as well with no issues (not that I post 4 damn paragraphs, but you get it) Incidentally, this issue doesint really rob me of sleep. Like I said I've managed and my question was essentially answered. Thank you.

I believe chat is actually still unencrypted UDP to the Region? There is no "Chat Server" per se.

Interestingly the out of order lines are generally not seen jumpbled by other people, it's mainly something local to the sender.
