Question

Can someone please help me understand the IM delivery capped message I received. I have heard that this happens but does it happen based on messages I send and get sent to me. Or is both included in there? Also, does this only happen when I'm offline because I spend most evening IMing with my fiancé did I've never received this message before. Or does it not take in account IMs to one person? Is this on a 24 hour basis then it resets? Omg I'm so confused lol. Thank you :)

It applies to the IMs you receive when you are offline

When a Resident is offline, up to 25 messages will be stored and delivered at the next login. This limit includes inventory offers, group notices, group invitation and IMs. All messages above this limit will be capped and not delivered.

However, there is an IM to Email feature, which sends offline messages directly to the mailbox connected to your account. To activate it, go to Edit > Preferences (or press Ctrl-P), go to the Communication tab and check the Send IM to Email checkbox. Press Apply and close the window with OK.

When an offline message is received via Email, this message can also be answered via Email again. These mails will be converted back to IM and sent to the right Resident. Note that the Email to IM feature expires 5 days after the receival of the IM. Messages sent afterwards won't be received anymore. Also note that the length of properly delivered Email replies is limited to 1023 bytes/single-byte characters. Messages exceeding this limited will be truncated to fit the limit.

Also note that offline IMs are only retained for 31 days and discarded afterwards. For example, if someone sends you an Instant Message and the next time you login is 33 days later, you won't receive it.

Well it actually doesn't really apply only to those IM's that you've recieved offline. I've been online, and people have been IMing me, but I will forget to respond, and I will get that message.

It refers to the number of new IM's it can show. Once it hits its limit, it won't show anymore.

The IM cap is so stupid! It makes it almost impossible to get IMs from friends when your offline. The way it should work IMO is that it shows the last 25 notices you received from groups, and IMs from people and objects should have no cap. The reason why IM caps are so stupid is notices from groups use up all your 25 messages, so IMs from people can't get in. group notices are not as important as IMs from people. Linden Labs please fix this!

PS please don't try to tell me about the IM to Email patch, I already know about it. Please fix your IM system. No other system puts a cap on IMs.

This is a resident to resident forum.  Lindens rarely come here and ever less often respond to anything here.  If you have a suggestion for a SL feature, the only way to get Linden attention is to submit a JIRA report.

BTW, the caps on various services like the IM retention are there to save on server storage and to reduce spam and other annoyance to residents.

fyi ..it's no patch, its the best feature there is to keep contact ... a response works for 5 days.

no capped IM's... you get every IM delivered.

btw... if just the number isn't enough.. get premium.

You didn't think this through.

With no limit, what happens when someone that gets lots of IM's doesn't login for a year? Ever again? Why would one bother to store all that stuff for indefinite periods?

Go into your groups and remove the checks from any and all groups you wish NOT to receive IM's from. I've done that and my cap limits warnings have declined. I get more IM's now from friends than from groups telling me useless info that I would have not read (or cared for) in the first place.

It's really quite simple to fix on your own than to ask LL to fix it.

I want notices from groups when I'm logged in. But not when I'm not logged in. I shouldn't have to check and uncheck them every time I log in and out. Even just doing 25 IMs per sender would be decent.

As my post said "any and all...". Who you uncheck is up to you. Keep the groups you have to keep checked. My $ says you have groups checked that frankly, don't use the group function as it is intended, but send out useless information (cuz some who have the ability to do so have a giant "look, I can send out group IM's" ego) and spam the group notices to no end. Those should be the first to be unchecked. If it is a group that you really need, contact the owner and lodge a complaint to the number of spam IM's that go out. Who you uncheck is completely up to you To expect LL to "fix it" is howling at the moon. It's easier to remedy it on your end.

I stand by my original post.
