Kenbro Utu
Have you seen this? Latest venture from the Lab... Are they going after Facebook?
Janelle Darkstone
I think they got the background image wrong. Here ya go, LL! They can keep the tagline though -- "Go Someplace New With Dio".
Panther Miklos
:matte-motes-oh-rly: ""puts on captain obvious hat for a moment"" Right, so they can develop something like this, but they just take newcomers to SL and drop them in the middle of nowhere (really) and expect them to know all the basics? Flabbergasted just doesn't seem enough..... edit - fergot about the dang smiley thingies
Charolotte Caxton
Thanks, I had not seen it. It's like an interactive storybook.
Kenbro Utu
On the other hand, it does appear that the Lab is healthy, churning out new products. A healthy Lab is better for SL than a languishing Lab. *shrug*
Kenbro Utu
Yes, did't Rodvik talk about an interactive story telling idea a while back, or maybe it was one of the acquisitions?
Dillon Levenque
I don't use Facebook but I have a pretty good idea of how it works, and Dio does not seem to me to be either related or, really, in competition. Inara Pey has blogged about Dio and she blogged about today's release here. It actually sounds kind of interesting. It's not (from what I could see) really anything to do with SL but it does appear to include ways for creative and clever people to generate income. There are a whole lot of clever and creative people in SL, many of whom are motivated at least a little bit by the possibility of earning something for the cleverness. I see no reason why someone from SL couldn't use Dio to advantage.
Kenbro Utu
I see that now after signing up. It is, however, integrated with Facebook.with a social comment plugin.

Melita Magic
Ah, this is a lot like the idea I've had for a while, except for one part. Matter of time before that happens, too. Wish I were plugged in somewhere my ideas counted.
Madeliefste Oh
To me it does not feel as something that is NEW. It feels like going back in time... like it is a mix between twenty year old text adventures and a power point presentation, with a bit of activity possibilities added. Melita Magic
Of course we can all imagine the first 'activity possibility' most people will do! Lol (And no that part wasn't in my idea.)

Not sure if I should laugh, cry, be embarrassed, etc., etc. but I can honestly say that I last played a game like that on...errr....ummm....the same PC I am using now. Even though it was still a long time ago, it wasn't when that genre was popular; I was part of an IRC channel and one of the regulars created a MUD, MUSH, MOO, whatever it's called and invited us to join him. Amethyst Jetaime
My impression is: IRC with pictures, kinda sorta SL for dummies geared to the face/twit crowd, boring Maybe a bunch of SL'ers should 'create' rooms using SL pictures and our avatars to show dio people what they are missing lol. Nuhai Ling
This is another one of those Linden Lab things that makes me have several one-line thoughts I can't express any other way... Linden Lab gave up on the whole "we want to be like Facebook" thing a few years ago but evidently decided they wanted to be a new Zynga? They definitely want that leech-like attachment. Anyone notice the app accesses all your Facebook personal info and pics if you sign in that way? Why do they want to do that? Isn't Dio copyrighted by some band from the 80's? I asked my dad and he remembers it being very popular. Ho-hum.... after signing in and seeing a few places its pretty boring and hard to understand what is suppose to happen. Go left? Ok... another picture page. Go up? Ok... another picture page. I guess flipping through a photo album forward and backward was not enough? This I don't understand but my dad said old people would: our parents used to write if/then programs like this back in the 80's on school computers for fun. He said it worked really well for Dungeons & Dragons games... huh? I regret asking him the Dio copyright question above now! :matte-motes-sick: If kids in the 80's (and my dad) could program this, what does that say about the technical level of Linden Lab's employees now? That would explain a lot... I don't get it... I wonder if this is what newbies falling into SL feel like today. I am sad if it is...
Nuhai Ling
Porky, I just got an earful of the Dio worship from my dad and him questioning why I was asking about it... I suddenly feel like a good girl asking about porn! Why don't you old men go back to the garage and relive the 80's metal music out there? I don't think the rest of society is ready for this kind of thing to come out of the closet... {{hugs}} Love both you and my dad... just please... keep it in the garage! Porky Gorky
Dio is both a person and the name of a band. I guess Dio (Ronny James Dio) is most notable for replacing Ozzy as the front man for Black Sabbath in 79. I was born in 75, so am not that old, Sabbath was a bit before my time though, but I very much enjoyed their melodic sounds retrospectively. Dio's influence is still relevant today and permeates into modern culture and music that kids like yourself may enjoy. Most notably TenaciousD I would think. ETA, there is some strong language in this vid so prolly best not to play it in front of your dad if he does not approve, although he sounds like a pretty cool dude to me. :matte-motes-big-grin:
Porky Gorky
Getting back on topic, I've reviewed LL's new site and it sucks, Every second LL spent on that could have been better spent fixing SL or building a superior replacement platform,. I have the same opinion with regards to Patterns and Creatorverse. LL keep pulling this novelty tripe out of their backsides in the hopes something will go viral, but it is all to the detriment of SL and it's continued sustainability and development. If Rod Humble is the driving force behind these new products then I fear he will do more damage to SL than Kingdon ever did by the time he is done.
