  2. I agree with what tripple said, but have something to add. I've owned land all over mainland from tiny plots up to whole mainland SIMs. I've also "owned" a homestead island SIM with restart-rights, but not estate rights. Anyway, having said that for background, I really never need to restart a SIM. I know some SIMs do it all the time, but I think its just a nervous psychological tik of some sort.
  3. Baloo Uriza wrote: Unless you're using a particularly ancient operating system or an operating system that handles filesystem caching especially poorly, you're not going to see any significant difference using a RAM drive for your SL cache versus letting the filesystem handler do it's job. I second that opinion.
  4. I would just spend whatever money you choose to spend on buying more RAM and then let the operating system's disk-caching system do its job. The SSD will make your system boot faster. It will make things load faster the first time, but since SL gets most of its data over the internet, you won't get as much improvement as--say--those running local-disk based games.
  5. The best value for me is: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=desktops&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&series_name=h8xt_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/desktops/High_performance/h8xt_series Configure it with the 600W power supply and the 1.5GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 and you'll have something that will seem fast for about 2 years and okay in year 3, IMHO. My system is kinda like that, but I got it 2 years ago :matte-motes-big-grin: . The above or its successor is what I'll probably buy in the fall or this time next year. I've the older i7 930 and the older Radeon HD 5770 (1.0GB DDR5) card, and it runs SL high-graphics mode bumped up to 256 meters without much trouble. You can probably get a discount off the rack rate if you work for a major employer or are a student or support a student. Call the phone number and ask about that. You can save a few bucks by getting a cheaper video card now; the GTX 580 is overkill for SL this year, IMHO. However, if you go with a cheaper card now, please still get the 600W power supply so that you can do a mid-life graphics card upgrade in a year or two. Or, just get the GTX 580 now and rock on.
  6. Okay, now I know that METABolt is the way to make the BOT. Now I just need to figure out how to make the appropriate plug-in for METABolt.

Qie Niangao wrote: I don't think you'll find LSL functions for modifying those parcel settings (although you can read them with llGetParcelFlags), so you'd need to use a bot with corresponding land abilities. I've searched the LL_Functions and it seems you are correct: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:LSL_Functions . I have the JVA BOT package, but the developer seems to not be so active anymore. Do you know a BOT package I can buy with land capabilites? Otherwise, I'll just have to do it myself and hold parties.
  8. Subject: Combat - Randomly Enabling Damage / Push On Combat Enabled SIM I can script a little, and usually make out what the pro’s are trying to do, and can usually modify / combine scripts to my purpose. I’m a programming dinosaur. Paid for my first electronics engineering degree doing scientific programing in FORTRAN 77 for a power company in the 1980s. Later, I taught myself C/C++, but never used it professionally. I used to do a little assembly language code on Intel and Motorola processors. So, can someone tell me where to start? I now own some damage-enable’able land on the old Jessie SIM, which is the only damage enabled SIM on mainland. As you know, there are now instant-kill weapons, which make the embedded SL combat systems not so much fun. People can wipe out all the Avatars on a SIM in an instant or two. Rather than deal with advanced scripting, what I’d like to do is to turn on the native LL combat system on my Jessie Land for 5+/- minutes at random, and sound an alert (a shout) that “Fights On!”. This would enable various bar brawl themes. And, if someone wanted to be a jerk and wipe everyone out in an instant, well, everyone could come back in 5 minutes anyway. Help get me started. I can find random timers. What procedure call do I use to turn on damage and pushing? Also, I'll want to turn on-and-off "everyone build" capability for the same period so that weapons can rez visual effects (arrows, etc.). I'll use a 1 minute object-return to do clean-up. Thanks!
  9. I have the ATI 5770 and I leave "OpenGl Vertex Buffer Objects" enabled without any problems. Your mileage may vary. 10. My only suggestion: Menu : Preferences : Setup, and then slide the "Maximum Bandwidth" slider way above the default 500 kbps. If you've already done that, then perhaps cut down your draw distance. If you've already done all that, I'll wait for wiser comments from the others.
  11. I don't know why the V2/3 updates always default to 500 kbps max bandwidth (ditto Firestorm and Phoenix). I always slide that back up to 10000 kbps and lag goes down. I have Verzion FiOS of 15 Mbps download variety. So, I don't have any packet loss to speak of at 10000 kbps. Your mileage may vary, but most people will be able to run at greater than 500 kbps, I believe.
  12. While I never really disliked the V2/3 sidebar, I do like the V3.2 approach a little better. I'm still looking forward the the upcoming Firestorm release for the build tools (e.g., undo, copy coordinates, etc.) and the bridge-based radar. This V3.2 approach should give the Firestorm folks more time to spend on value-added bridge-based functionality, considering they should have less work to do in tweaking the interface. Also the V3.2 "CTRL-Shift-U" hiding of controls may be useful to me sometime when I'm on my small-screen laptop.
  13. The live chat system is worthless. Never ever use live chat. File a ticket. Make a phone call, etc., generally speaking. For this specific case, I would cancel your billing method and establish a new one. I tend to change to and from credit cards and paypal (back and forth) when things get hung up.
  14. I go to the development menu, load the test avatar. Then, I reload my skin / shape / hair / clothes from scratch. Seems to work. Only have to do it very rarely as a last resort.
  15. Don't know about Mac, but on Windows 7 one can right-click on V2 and "run as administrator" and then V2 will have the priveleges it needs to do the autoupdate.
  16. Canoro Philipp wrote: you can also try increasing in this window the maximum internet bandwidth that Second Life use so everything will download faster, i use it at max, 10,000 kbps. Ditto that. I run an i7 with an Radeon 5770, which is very similar to the 5570 (5770 has faster DDR5 memory). I have no problems. I don't think it is your hardware. I'm running the current V3 beta, btw. Second Life 3.0.3 (240667) Sep 13 2011 12:01:00 (Second Life Beta Viewer) CPU: Intel® Core i7 CPU Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc. 17. Norton rejected slplugin.exe on my Firestorm 3 beta install, so I uninstalled Firestorm and V3, and did a fresh install of V3. I filed a Firestorm Jira (SUP-5971). Fellow who responded to SUP-5971 had helped me before (trust him) indicated that Norton just hadn't caught up with the new Firestorm. I'll try again in a week or so.
  18. The profiles on the V3 beta are a lot faster. Not sure whether to described them as web based. Its a major change.
  19. You might run SL off a USB drive, or create a private hidden encrypted partition with http://www.truecrypt.org/ . That would address the issues Darren mentioned. You can take it as far as you like--even create a hidden bootable partition. So your entire environment is yours alone when you boot from your private hidden encrypted partition. This is not a physical disk-level partition. Once you log into it, it then becomes a partition from your perspective. See http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=hidden-operating-system and http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=hidden-volume .
  20. Tristizia Demonista wrote:... Also i wonder, if these would make a UI successful, why is Phoenix the most used Viewer? (Their default color scheme is everything BUT nice to look at.) ... Indeed, that is the heart of the issue. Phoenix succeeded because it was more like V1. V2/3 got a lot of criticism because it was more like other successful user interfaces, but less like V1. It would seem that making V2/3 more like other popular software, and therefore less like V1, would decrease V2/3 acceptance rather than increase it. My understanding of the situation is that to quiet and calm those who complain about V2/3, LL must revert to V1 and never change anything at all ever again. The alternative is to move forward and let the complainers complain. There is no middle ground.
  21. Not one word about the Pie? I thought the reason people didn't like V2/3 was because the scalable right-click drop-down menu didn't allow them to click their mouse as many times as if they had a Pie. Also, you are suggesting that V2/3 be more like other successful user interfaces. But, the primary complaint I hear about V2/3 is that it did choose to be more like other successful interfaces--instead of being more like the V1 Pie.

The argmuents made over the available viewers says a lot more about the users making the statements than the actual viewer they are using. Indeed, I'd like to be cool like all the other kids and run arround shouting XX Rules!! YY Sux Big Time!! -- but my brain gets in the way. They just ain't that different.
  23. I tend to agree with a lot of what you said. I'd value your perspective on the following. The short version is that I don't really see much difference between the Phoenix and Viewer 1 user interfaces, nor do I see much difference between the Firestorm and Viewer 2 / 3 interfaces. I use Phoenix or Firestorm occasionally for radar. I used to use Emerald or Viewer 1 for search, before LL fixed V2 search. So, I've used various viewers for various functional reasons--not because of user interface differences. So, what interests me now is the psychology behind hearing people on these forums--and inworld--complain so bitterly about the V2 user interface while praising the Firestorm user interface. The trouble I have is that the user interfaces aren't that much different. Surely as Firestorm matures to the level Phoenix is now, I'll appreciate the additional features such as good radar. But, what's going on here? How is it that people say they love one user interface and hate another, when the two have only trivial differences? Is it all about the pie? The pie is a really bad design in my opinion, but it is usable in Phoenix, and fortunately in Firestorm I can turn it off. Then, if it is all about the pie, how is it that people find a V2 without the pie so hard to use, when V2 operates with right-click just like every other commercial Windows program out there? It seems that most people (excepting Mac users) who use SL so much would at least use some other Windows programs, which would cause V2 to feel rather familiar.
  24. Agreed. I've only been using 2nd Life a year and a few months, though I'm an Engineer working in information technology--so I've used quite a few software programs and programmed a few myself. With my background, V1 just seems weird. Its like an abandoned language used by some isolated tribe. V2 seems like a normal interface. I think those that want to perpetuate the V1 interface are going to have to find programmers to work for free. V1 is just too far off the beaten path. People don't get paid to do weird stuff like that anymore.
