  1. I'm paying attention. To be fair, I haven't tried Blender since mesh came to SL. Last time I downloaded Blender was a couple of years ago. So, I guess I should give Blender another try. It is hard to believe that cheaper is better, but maybe so!
  2. Yet Another (YA) Software inquiry. Starting with Mesh. Hey, I'm looking for a program to make mesh and I'm close to punching the "buy" button on ZBrush by Pixologic in the coming week or so. I already have Adobe Photoshop CS6 extended (with the 3D extensions). I don't know really what I want to make. $700+/- for a good program is not painful for me, but $3675+ for Maya and the like would be painful. I want to dabble with pretty shapes like flowers and trees and also build things like the arched river bridge that I bought from a Mesh builder. Do you have any advice for me? I've been building for a while in SL. I've dabbled in Blender, but don't like it. Blender seems to require me to integrate several add-on programs, which is a pain. I have used some of the in-world sculpt creating tools and find them quite limiting. While I might sell a thing or two, I'm more interested in creating for my personal enjoyment that making an SL store. I've had a marketplace store before, but wasn't really into it. Thanks for any advice!?
  3. Here's Tom's Hardware's May 2012 Article on "Best Graphics Cards For The Money: May 2012". http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html I'm running the AMD 7950 which was arguably the 2nd best card in world in February 2012 when I bought it. Since NVidia's next generation is finally shipping, they seem to be a little bit ahead, but I'm not sure you could tell the difference. With my AMD 7950 I can run around in Ultra Mode 256 meter all the time and not have any issues, except on the most crowded of SIMs. On crowded SIMs (like 75 Avi.s) I sometimes drop back to High Mode if everyone is dancing, but if there is something I want to see in Ultra, I can run ultra even then. Even then, I think the limitation is the SIM's ability to source data, not the graphic card's ability to process it. I think this because I can play Skyrim Elder Scrolls (a popular game) in high-rez high-settings all the time. I think the best place to buy graphics cards is Newegg.com or Amazon.com . YMMV.

  5. I was using Firestorm until the V3 FUI came out. Then when Firestorm got FUI, I used Firestorm for a while again, but the profiles in Firestorm quit working properly. So, I'm back to 100% V3 until the next Firestorm update, and then I'll reconsider. My system: CPU: Intel® Core i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz (3510.32 MHz) Memory: 16337 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc. Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series Before L.Labs hid Firestorms ability to show what viewer people were using, I worried a bit that it wasn't cool to run V3. But then in winter 2011/12 I hung out in the old Beta SIMs a good bit--Jessie SIM and over at Ivory Tower. And, I noticed that a lot of the class of 2003 was running V3. So, I kinda got over the class of 2008 folks calling me a noob for using V3. (I'm class of 2010). And now, no one can tell anyway. At the present, V3 beats the others overall. There are still some things that I can only do in CoolViewer. There are still some things that I can only do in Phoenix or Firestorm. I do have to run a third party radar in V3 (Thomas Conover 's radar is my choice). Oh, and MetaBOLT rocks for running scripted BOTs. But overall, V3 is tops in my book for day-to-day use.
  6. I find V3 to be the best user interface. Firestorm has some additional features that I like, but Firestorm currently has messed-up profile boxes. I'm really looking forward to the next Firestorm update. Currently, I use Firestorm about 60% of the time and V3 40% of the time. Oh, I use CoolVL rarely because it has a couple of features that I can't find anywhere else. V1 sux big time.
  7. Go into Preferences, then into Graphics, then into Advanced/Hardware, and un-check "streaming VBOs". Go into Preferences, then into Network/Cache, then slide the bandwidth slider up from 500 kbps to whatever you think is appropriate for your internet service. I set mine at 10000 kbps because I have 15000 kbps FiOS service.
  8. ATI cards work fine on SL. I have the 5770 and it works great. I can run high-graphics all the time everywhere. I run ultra-graphics sometimes, but take a performance hit for doing so. 9. Here is a good article about owning land: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Beginning-landowner-FAQ/ta-p/700035 For renting, try Googling 'renting vs. owning land in second life' . I typically buy / own, because land has gotten so cheap. I have rented furnished skyboxes in the past. There is a surplus of real estate in both the ownership and rental market in Second Life. So, if there is anything at all difficult about your rental, I'd advise to cut your losses and move on.

I hope you have a wonderful day! How did your support request turn out?
  11. I've had trouble making updates to profile photos "stick" in Phoenix. Other V1 based viewers may be similar; Firestorm's legacy-profile mode may be similar. There are just too many third-party variations to test them all. That being said, what works is to do the update in the official Linden Labs Viewer. Thereafter you can go back to running whatever viewer you like. Some of the third-party viewers may work also. Did I mention that there are just too many third-party variations to test them all? :matte-motes-nerdy:

  13. Ditto the advice re filing a support ticket. LL has a lot of unsold land, and a lot of older abandoned land that was abandoned before the new rules took place. If LL thinks they can sell the land, they'll be glad to set it for sale. With so much unsold land, LL is not sending Lindens inworld to set it all for sale manually. I suppose they should automate for the older abandoned land also, but they have not.
  14. SIM crossing in vehicles has always been rough for me. I doubt that it will ever get better.

No its not a nervous tik of some sort...homesteads share space with several other sims..if they are lagtastic, restarting your homestead pushes to share with others - which hopefully arent so laggy and your lag will cease. Same with full sims, just less sharing than homesteads. hope that clarifies for you Yes, that clarifies it for me.
  16. Ah, clear the cache and reboot the SIM. :matte-motes-evil-invert:
  17. You'll appreciate the pie menu. It allows you to make more clicks in selecting things than the drop-down menu.
  18. @Alison, I liked Phil's advice too. Here is what I would do. You can vary a bit depending on your situation. 1. Create new group. 2. Invite your Alt. Create an Alt if you don't have one. Use your Alt to test anything you want to test about your group permissions before you invite anyone else. You'll be moving your Alt up and down in privilege levels and "firing" him/her from time to time. The two non-obvious privileges to be most careful with are "accounting" and "create/assign new roles". All Avatars with "accounting" privileges will get a equal share of any payments made the the group. An Avatar with "create/assign new roles" can create a role with all privileges short of owner, and can do anything short of firing you as owner, including buy/sell/abandon land. If you declare a co-owner, you cannot fire them. Thus, only your Alt should ever be a co-owner. 3. Deed your land to your group, and check the "contribute tier with deed" box, and your tier will be transferred to your group in the same instant your land is deeded. Your land autoreturn will be automatically set to zero (0) so that your land doesn't clear. 4. Run Thomas Conover's Full-Sim scanner to find all prims that are not under your new group. Re-classify each prim to your new group. Rescan to make sure you have all of them. 5. Set autoreturn for land to 1 minute. Notice if any prims return to your lost-and-found. Re-rez if so. 6. Double-check all your group permissions. Start inviting avatars to your group. Enjoy!

I was wondering though, is this a good idea? Is there any interest in this kind of thing? How exactly would I get started? Thank you for any input you have ^^ It is a very crowded field. You'll be able to find customers, but you probably won't make enough to recoup your costs.
  20. I'm a little confused about the term "region." I know that my community is Fumb and I know that this is Mainland. But does my region have a name? And how do I find out the boundaries of my region? And "sim" is synonymous with "region," right? Hit the world-map button (not the mini-map). The Region (aka SIM) name will be shown in one of the lower corners. Regions (aka SIMs) are the 256x256 meter plots of land that bear a Region (aka SIM) name.
  21. If I interpret correctly, you seek advice on two fronts. Firstly, there is the land you own outright. I can advise you on how to transfer that land and those prims to a new group of which you are the sole owner. I've done that several times. However, if you instead want to transfer the land to a group for which you will be joint owners with your associate, I would advise against that. Unless, you are willing to give away your land to your associate for free, because that is essentially what you will be doing. Regarding your associates land on an estate, it really doesn't mater much about deeding that land to a group. She/he doesn't really own it anyway. Anyway, there are so many different options on this--at least in my mind--I would have to write quite a lot to handle all the different scenarios. What I need to help you is to know whether you want to maintain the sole right to sell your current land, or whether you want to give that right to your associate. Unlike RL, where land can be set up such that joint-owners have to agree to sell land, in SL any single joint owner can sell the land out from under the other owners.
  22. Based on your stats "2 GBytes max" and "running Vista," I would recommend a new computer. Yours is getting to the age that it becomes a little harder to plug-and-play new hardware components, because your hardware is 2-to-3 generations back. If you are tech savvy and own multiple computers, then perhaps follow the advice about upgrades and switching to Linux. But, if you were and had those things, you probably wouldn't be asking this question. Take care
  23. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Gemmed/55/93/23 Or the "free" Linden home areas, even.
  24. Has LL started turning off some of the old Viewer 1 server side support? When they do, that will affect users of V1-based viewers differently than V2/3-based viewers.
  25. This is a very full featured solution: link. I use this. This is a more affordable solution: link. I have not used this. Phoenix has something built in. Happy hunting!
