  1. I've lost the thread of this thread but what I really want to know is why is everyone turning into a muppet?
  2. *slides 10 alts created for RP under the bed* But seriously - if you're not up to anything nefarious or using it to harass people, go ahead and be you.. twice! šŸ˜„
  3. dang, I had to google it. now I feel all unclean
  4. "Knock knock" "Race condition" "Who's there?"
  5. Interesting topic. I think there are a multitude of reasons why an individual would prefer one over the other, but here are some of my own observations: - It is indeed hard to get a sense for nuances of speech via text, however, when I have known someone for a number of years I get to know their "text-tone of voice" and can tell when they "sound" sad or jubilant or stressed out. Sometimes i get it wrong, but then sometimes I get it wrong with verbal cues too. With complete strangers it's more difficult, so time (to get to know the person) is the big factor. - Voice has a few confounding variables, especially accents or regional vocab, or just habits of communication. For example, laughing, in some East Asian cultures, can be nervousness not humour or mockery, but it may be hard for other cultures to pick up on that. Other example, some Americans can sound very loud and aggressive, when they are really only trying to be friendly. Just a couple of examples I have encountered. - Some people just don't have a spoken emotive tone (autistic friends come to mind) and text is more comfortable and expressive/precise for some of them. Most of the people I have befriended online are comfortable in text, or text/voice in equal levels of comfort. I tend towards text because my home environment needs some degree of quiet (I work from home) and because I don't really want to showcase my nasal voice! The other aspect is some conversations are asynchronous, and it is understood that an immediate reply is not expected.
  6. Us other-side-of-the-world people gotta make our own fun
  7. Only once, for me, did a friend take it into his head that I was a dude and wanted to hear my voice to prove I wasn't. It annoyed me enough that I used voice for perhaps the 3rd (and last) time I ever did in SL, and because the connection was very bad and I was irritated I shouted at him. He then said: Ok, I believe you, please don't use voice again! If it's a random dude asking, he's welcome to think whatever he likes. If you want to troll him back just say: Well I heard you're really a girl and I wanted to meet you šŸ˜˜
  8. train em young! but yeah, I don't see bright colour-cartoony look holding its appeal for most of them from their mid 30s and beyond. I didn't discover SL til I was a just a little short of 40.
  9. Oof.. sorry to hear that. Depending on the laws where you live, it might be a police matter (online scam).
  10. basically me whenever the downstairs neighbours are making meatballs...
  11. I think the problem some are having in this particular discussion is just in terms of how different people show empathy and a desire to help - some want to give a hug and tell the person it'll be ok, some want to give concrete advice that will help solve the problem. Both sides are somewhat frustrated with the other's approach. Irony is, both sides genuinely (as far as I can tell) want to help. What shall the conclusion be? hmmm.. maybe they will heed your words and find common ground. šŸ™‚
  12. So, is the purpose of this to see if a virtual representation will entice people to go experience the real thing? FWIW, over many years of SL exploration, I visited virtual respresentations of places I was already interested in (Venice, New Orleans, Japan) but unlikely to go to in RL. Virtual tourism is accomplished in seconds, and pure fun, while real toursim is long, tedious and expensive, and fun if nothing goes awry. I view virtual tourism more as a toy substitute than a travel brochure. Same as I visit virtual spaceships, but i sure will never go into space, unless Elon invites me.
  13. steampunk doesn't interest me much. But I will probably pop by to see SLB just because I usually do. Personally, I'm fine with an open-theme World Expo sort of thing for people to showcase whatever is cool this year in their country/region/city/imaginary world.
  14. This happened to me.. I resisted mesh bods when they came out, as I resist all New Things, so a lad I was roleplaying with bought me a Maitreya bod and said please wear it. I admit it, he was right. what i think when anyone asks me how I like their look...
  15. oh cool, I didn't know about that shop so thanks for sharing it! I see a baju kurung that looks just like one I have in RL šŸ˜ Ok, well if any designers are stuck for ideas, here's a free survey for them! /me drops everything and goes to look...
  16. I've only been a party to one "staring incident" in SL. I had parked my cursor on a random spot while shopping and went afk to go to the loo. When I returned, a girl had IM'd me asking why I was looking at her. I told her the truth, and she seemed kinda disappointed. šŸ˜…
  17. when i check elderly relatives online security šŸ˜‘
  18. Virtual traces of me will probably be around long after physical me is gone. I hope if/when SL permanently goes offline they snapshot it and store it intact somewhere, like a virtual Pompeii to puzzle future generations of digital archeologists.
  19. now whenever I see someone with a pet I will wonder who's walking who šŸ¤”
  20. I wonder about this. Is it still holding true now as it did years ago (which was indeed a muscle-man and barbie era), or has it just become an assumption as one designer tried it and it wasn't popular for whatever reason, and now repeated so subsequent designers take it as unalterable fact and don't bother to try? There must be demand for alternative bodies or that Kemono thing wouldn't be popular. All the guys (and guy-looking) people I know in SL are unimpressed with muscleman bodies, they just don't have a lot of choice. I dunno, as I don't follow mesh body design all that closely (I just slap on Maitreya and I'm done), but has any designer tried this market again recently?
