  1. TELEPORT TO FURNISHED RANCH $950/425 PRIMS. This is an amazing former B&B location which I am going to take down soon or repurpose but before I do, I will see if anyone wants to rent it "as is". This is Barnsworth's [ba] san clemente casita by a Linden waterfalls above a river on the Hacienda. It has six rooms with Southwest/Mexican decor -- two living rooms, one with fireplace, kitchen with breakfast nook, music room, study, back room. It also has a back porch with brunch and steaks and front porch with refreshments. It has THREE skyboxes which are lockable to teleporters with names, furnished in various modern or rustic styles. It's really cool! Self-join group, refund any time. Pets welcome, plenty of lawn space. I have honey bee hives and two cats there but they can be removed.
  2. I don't have any of the technical knowledge or insights any of you have and generally attend the code-cave meetings only once a year, just to see if I need to reduce my level of horror or not. I tend to think -- over 19 years -- that the "spaghetti code" stuff is actually a myth, a story told to cover up either bad choices or uninformed executive decisions. I think it would be hard to keep the spaghetti code situation going through so many changes and the switch to AWS. Yes, I think Monty (if that's the one I'm thinking who wanted to have Mainland scenes roll out in front of you as your drove) -- is still a dewy-eyed newbie. So...taking everything you know -- and don't know -- where would you all say the effort with "fixing search" stands at this point in time?
  3. There's a big mall in the sim called Timescape on the Corscia continent, I love the name and I have a little spot there. The rent is cheap, $50/week for 25 prims I think. Look on the map, you'll find it. I believe in having an inworld presence, yes. It's rare I see any nicely-maintained malls with reasonable rates open to anyone, these days, of course with some rules. I used to maintain more of them but ditched quite a few because it's true people go either on the Marketplace, or if they are super talented, are in the main events like Access or Collabor88 or whatever. But there should be openings for new and amateur and less talented folks, too, that would make for a diverse economy.
  4. Why don't you donate it to one of the locations collecting for Ukraine.
  5. Sometimes I see Tiny Empires takes this form. I don't know why they need to do this. Camping the spawn...or something? Not sure. Also bots may have been originally configured in one spot, and then from there, they fan out to scrape data.
  6. Store lots available on seaside mountain snow sim near Linden sea with icebergs Teleport to Refugio $135/200 - $150/225 - $165/250 *Self-join group *Refund any time for small fee which is returned if you rent elsewhere in our system *Search/places ad included in rent Use our buildings or place your own.
  7. $728/856 prims Deep-sea waterfront, sail to 7 Linden seas. Self-join group, refund any time. Pets, skyboxes welcome. 4 wks 10% off. Donate 1024 m2 for $710/wk discount. Teleport to Cub
  8. Rare highly-terraformable waterfront on 7 Linden Seas 4096 $65,500 16/m Make a mermaid cave or grotto Deep Sea Roadside/waterfront combined Teleport to Cub
  9. 2,144 m2 Flat Roadside in Sansara Hidden Lakes $22,000 or $10.3 meter Make an offer Teleport to Maryport
  10. The Lindens did indeed speak of it as something they would do. And...no doubt they believe that the mall they have created across from the Belli welcome hub and Motown regions *is* this commercial Bellisseria -- they said they would rotate the merchants selected for it, all of whom were chosen, and did not apply (it really should be like Shop 'n Hop with applications and rules). Not sure if it is such a windfall for those merchants, because typically newbies don't have cash when they start.
  11. Wait, are you saying the put it on the auction? Or put it directly for sale inworld, like the old first land 512s? For what price?
  12. The Lindens still have a lot of headroom with Belli because each and every style can still be converted to "open plan" and then "2048". Then they can roll out 4096. Then they could still make good on their pledge to have some kind of commercial area (beyond the mall for their pets by the new welcome area), what was it called in the old days? Ben's Auto Supplies? To be sure, with stagnant concurrency, they have to eat further into the Mainland to achieve this.
  13. In case anyone wondered what happened to MY project (I still have the poster!) I ended up not being able to justify building on the lots purchased by the SLRR once the Lindens overshadowed it with their stations. So instead, the contract was awarded to Alias Stonebender to build the Solar City in Hartwick. It had futuristic homes you entered by the roof and a large stadium with a sun design, homes combined with stalls to sell things. Jer Graaf already had his RR in Sutherland, so I provided land for him to extend it from there through Hartwick and Wakeley, and at one time it went all the way to Brownlee where I had land by the old telehub which the Lindens replaced with a juice bar. All of this is gone now. I had to end my support of Jer's RR sadly (he also built for me an amazing apartment tower for Brownlee that did very well for a time and was cleverly designed to give people dedicated parcels and privacy). That's because...people didn't use the RR and didn't tip even if they did. That's the way of the virtual world. I eventually had to dump all the land in Hartwick as well as all kinds of other things like Horizons competed with it -- and "space" is a niche in SL anyway. Again, as this is the "ineffective altruism" corner, you have to please yourself, do things that make sense for you, business-wise, stay small, and not depend on the Lindens. PS Railroads are niche, too, like space.
  14. OK, thank you for that clarification. Well, perhaps not considered "a serious builder" *for that purpose*, but please yourself. Being unceremoniously removed from Bhaga -- as I must now remember it -- has certainly not deterred Alazarin, who recently completed a really nice Art Deco sort of tower for us on the Mainland island of Ross, as well as other projects. But I do wonder what the rationale was (claques of furries involved? Concern about prims? But that surely wasn't it.) Michael Linden made sure to leave his mark on SL and shall never be forgotten.
  15. Saw this same fraudulent message yet again tonight on yet another account with yet another web site links so they continue to evade the Lindens.
  16. In Brighton Beach and for that matter in Cape Cod, people can own X amount of feet of shoreline, but of course not the ocean as such so their ownership taps out. So now how do you get to that shoreline or that low tide such as to walk along it legally? You can't, because you'd have to cross the 10 yards or whatever of that owned land where there are guard dogs.
  17. The Soviet had this, too, and it comes as a shock to Russian emigres to discover that they can't just walk through people's backyards, and some people think they even own the ocean shore and put up guard dogs to enforce it. Of course, they collectivized land by murdering tens of millions of people, but yeah, "right to roam". The Lindens could, of course, exercise "eminent domain" here, compensating land owners, and fix this.
  18. While we're on this painful topic, let me rest on the subject of Baghera for a moment. At one point in their long and glorious history, the Lindens held an architectural contest to have residents build rail stations. What actually happened is that first *I* bought up a dozen railside plots and held a contest to build anything -- a station, a store, a housing complex -- and the winner would get a cash prize and build it there. Nigel Linden gave me a model train (which I still have, ask me for it) to use in the promotion. My contest was heavily griefed by people who felt I was too prominent, too busy, ,too something. The Lindens then stepped in an coopted this idea -- after doing nothing about the heavy griefing -- and got perhaps a few dozen submissions, which they placed around the grid. In Baghera, a modern, sleek looking station was built by Alazarin Mondrian, as good if not better than a similar one by Jauani Wu and others, but for some reason, after being placed for a time in Baghera by the Lindens, some time later it was removed, and in fact, a much higher prim station was put there by Michael Linden, along with outrageously high prim props like suitcase trolleys, still there today. I never understand why that happened.
  19. I don't think I know this rail-fail because it's on a continent I think I left long ago, not sure. I'm aware of roads that have odd teleport boards with funny slogans made by the Moles, instead of normal roads built through. If they couldn't be pushed through because the sims were too hastily rolled out at the time on the auctions to get roads in time, certainly now, with all the abandoned land, they could. No, I know of ANOTHER very long-drawn out rail-fail that was rehearsed here on the forums with all sorts of crazy and falsehoods, which boiled down to this: o resident RR ambitiously bought up land and pushed through a rail without a lot of planning. o when they encountered other people, they would try to buy them out or ask at least for a through-pass (which I did in my case). o though I was friendly to RRs and like them in general, THIS one had some odd aspects, like an ugly electric power station on a riverbank and ugly pilons rising above the view over a nice, bucolic pond. It was redundant, given that a mere sim away, the Lindens had the SLRR -- but since it came to one of its dead-ends, a group of furries began agitating mightily when.... o the inevitable happened, and said resident RR enthusiast dumped his rail. Some of us had abandoned our land under the shadow of his huge pylons; now we could get it back. A lot of his land stayed abandoned or got rounded up by the Lindens who wrote "right of way" on some of it, as if they were going to add a leg to their own SLRR. o but life happened, the Lindens dropped it, the main Lindens pushing the concept was let go,, LL became distracted with Bellisseria, and they actually sold off on the auction some of what seemed like "Linden Land". o When a week later, I turned up as owner of this land -- for those not following every chapter -- accusations flew that "the Lindens gave me their land as I was their pet." In fact, a furry bought the land fairly on the auction and flipped it; I bought it from *him*. o The claque kept agitating for "my land" which was now "in the way of the Lindens' railroad" and "stopping progress" to be taken by "eminent domain". LL wasn't interested. PS, had they wished to push their RR through, they could have gone over other abandoned land nearby or made overpasses. It's their world. They would have been prettier than the resident's pylons. o Endless crazy persisted around this, but oddly enough, when we abandoned that land some months ago, no RR enthusiast seized it, nor did any Lindens. It was requested by land cutters who chopped it to ad farms. Please don't talk to me about resident railways ever again. I no longer believe in them. I have other stories to tell; it's enough.
  20. It wasn't "made by an estate company" exactly. There is actually a way more interesting back story here. Back when the Lindens used to auction entire sims and in large amounts, they would open telehub parcels at high bids as they would start at $10/m or go up from there to $20/m or higher. At a certain point, Anshe Chung figured out, or word was leaked to them, that the Lindens were retiring the telehubs (much maligned by oldbies and appreciated by midbies trying to break into the market) and moving to p2p so they wouldn't be needed (ostensibly -- a separate debate). So then instead of RENTING telehub parcels to her ready list of clients, she began SELLING telehub land. I distinctly remember my shock at seeing the telehub land in Monema for sale. She used to keep even copies of her rental clients' stores, so in the middle of the night when the auction was won as she was the highest bidder, she would quickly slap down those stores on behalf of her clients so they wouldn't miss a minute of sales. I know because I once miraculously snagged some telehub land when somebody let it go for a song, and she rented it, then re-rented it to her own client. But while all this was happening, some of the midbies who had bought telehub land inworld suddenly for the low price of $7 or $8 meter, instead of $10+ on the auction -- not realizing that it was now useless as LL wouldn't drive traffic there any more via the telehub system -- found out about the p2p impending and began to cry foul. A group of land dealers demanded a meeting with Philip Linden, then head of LL. They accused LL of "bait and switch" and began threatening lawsuits. They stood up in the meeting and said they'd dump their land unless Philip put this situation right and provided compensation. It wasn't really the Lindens who did bait and switch; it was more the land barons who knew about p2p but weren't telling, and sold the land anyway. Even so, LL didn't fairly announce it, either. Philip, to his credit offered the following: o LL would buy back telehub land that anyone currently owned, whether just won from an auction or purchased on the secondary market, for $7.5/meter; o for those who wanted to develop the telehubs into infohubs, the new entity, to serve their surrounding communities, they could have the Linden Land (usually around 4096) set to their group, after submitting proposals to be approved. So there were around a dozen resident groups that took this option, my group included. Anshe opted for the buyback, and the Lindens had to bring giant delivery trucks of Linden cash to her for all her enormous holdings of old and new telehub land. Now what? Anshe had a load of cash, but she was already dominating the new prime waterfront on the then-newest continents like Jaegeot, and Lindens took even longer then to cash out and turn to dollars to buy islands. Then the Lindens got their own back. It was *the Lindens* -- not "an estate owner* -- that rolled out that funny new continent that looked like islands in a way in terms of white sand, but was mainland, even if not contiguous in the way it worked. A new type of sim which was "pine" was created with forests and waterways. The white sand was in big demand, like Cancun. The sims were all named for scientists and artists and a few land barons. In my view, this was the Lindens' solution to having their back up against the wall, being forced to compensate the victims of land barons in this situation, as I look at it now. And this is a VERY GOOD example of why PROTEST AND CRITICISM IS ALWAYS NEEDED, and LL is to be credited for coming up with creative solutions. So....To stay on top of the market, Anshe was forced to take her telehub compensation funds, and buy heavily into those science/art sims, gritting her teeth. She flipped a lot of it to lesser barons who were overjoyed. And gradually she got off the Mainland. Remember in the game of Second Life, the house always wins. Those funny sims have been flipped to death -- we have personally come and gone from there -- and any estate owner once associated with them is long go. It's Mainland, at the end of the day.
  21. I've had this PP account since it was first offered and I don't feel it's a scam. I got a Ranch after a few days of trying which is normal when there's a new style. I took a random one as the "choice" function was not available yet for Ranches. And I'll leave it at that, as it's a stamp venue. I see Ranches since then I know others have gotten them. Yes, it's frustrating but I don't think it's a scam. Try again now that everyone is enamored with tree houses. And they'll have the 2048 in other styles soon. I'm not usually a Linden fanboy but I don't see "scam" here as much as "scarcity". You don't mention the uploads which for me, is the entire rationale of the account as I have a ton of uploads. I don't care about groups, and if you need 2048 tier, you could add to a premium with less cost. All my stipends get sucked into search/places fees (which I think should be made free as well on this account!). I think if you need an instant ranch and you don't care about uploads, this is not the account for you. Get 2048 abandoned in one of the many HUUUGE fields across the Mainland and put your cattle there. Rollin', rollin', rollin!
  22. I had this problem where I kept doing the LOOONG touch and it didn't work. It would say it was either resetting the controller, or taking the key for LSL. So after a dozen times of retrying, holding, relogging some, I finally got it to work and changed to Fairyspell as that has the tree up inside the house and a loft. I knew something was missing! I got this idea from Theresa's post in "Parade of Homes" with some decoration ideas as well. But I think the loft, the side spaces, the back space are separate enough that I can re-fit the furniture arrangements I had originally put out for bedroom, study, living room.
  23. Mesh floors in skyboxes in particular that bounce other mesh items when you try to place them and say "The owner of this land does not allow..." or "failed to place".
