  1. A complete clean reinstall worked just fine for me. Here are instructions on how to do it: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-Second-Life/ta-p/1375231 EDIT: A number of people are reporting this problem. You should do two things: 1. File a JIRA bug report. Include as much detail as you can about your system and the error messages you are getting. 2. Delete your installation and either re-install a previous version (you did save your prior downloads, right? They should be in your Downloads folder) or install one of the many fine third party viewers.
  2. It may be less complicated than you think. Click the Avatars button on the left of your screen (looks like two people.) Then choose from among the avatars depicted there, but choose a "classic" avatar, NOT a "mesh" avatar. Voila! Now you can wear traditional shapes, skins, and clothes. EDIT: On re-reading your post, I see that you want to make your avatar "just like you." Even with an editable avatar, this may be harder than you think. The avatar mesh isn't flexible enough to show fine details...that's left as the skin's job. And you might not be able to find a set of shape settings and a skin that get your avatar looking much like your RL self. You can certainly try, though. My suggestion would be to take a couple of photos of yourself in RL, with your hair pulled back, face on and profile. Use these as guides when adjusting the shape sliders. Then go in search of a skin that looks good on the shape you've created. Try the demos, don't buy anything until you find "the one". It's possible to use photos of yourself and apply them to a skin template, creating your own custom skin. However, the results I've seen using this method look pretty creepy. But my REAL suggestion is, don't try to mimic your RL self. Be a new you in Second Life, the best you that you can create.
  3. Your best response is to right click the person threatening you and choose Mute/Block. Then go on merrily about your day. It is extremely hard, and very rare, for someone's Second Life account to be "hacked." It is, however, possible to be TRICKED into giving someone access to your account, usually by being directed to a "phishing" website that looks like an SL website but is designed to get you to enter your user name and password. Be wary of this.
  4. I never let the system install updates. Something can get corrupted. It's much better to do a clean install, and here are the instructions on how to do it:http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-Second-Life/ta-p/1375231 EDIT: @Wycked Vella: The failure to initialize VFS is generally due to a corrupt download of the installer file. Delete that file from your downloads and re-download a fresh copy. Then do a clean install. SECOND EDIT: A number of people are reporting this problem. You should do two things: 1. File a JIRA bug report. Include as much detail as you can about your system and the error messages you are getting. 2. Delete your installation and either re-install a previous version (you did save your prior downloads, right? They should be in your Downloads folder) or install one of the many fine third party viewers. The viewer will not insist you install the update if you select "download and install updates manually" in your Preferences.
  5. There is a setting in Preferences/Graphics that enables local lights. Be sure that's on. There is a second setting in the Phototools menu (button like a camera iris), in the Light tab, "Enable Attached Lights (face lights)." Check that one, too.

    Why?

Either your credit card expired, or you didn't have sufficient funds in your PayPal account to meet your monthly Second Life bill. You may owe for unpaid charges. Update your payment method information, transfer more money to PayPal, and pay what you owe. That will fix the problem. If you don't think you owe anything, call Billing at one of the numbers below. US/Canada: 800-294-1067 France: 0805-101-490 Germany: 0800-664-5510 Japan: 0066-33-132-830 Portugal: 800-814-450 Spain: 800-300-560 UK: 0800-048-4646 Brazil: 0800-762-1132 Long distance ( not free, but you can use Skype to save some cost ) : 703-286-6277 **Note: Support is offered only in English
  8. Carroll, if you are brand new to Second Life, I had this problem initially as well. I fixed it by changing to a different avatar outfit. To do that, click the button on the left of your screen with two people on it. Choose another avatar from the samples shown, and then wait a few moments. If that doesn't help, then definitely start working down the list in the link Rolig gave you.
  9. First of all, don't feel too bad. My friend Trout Recreant had the same problem when he found out what HIS last name meant (an oath-breaker.) Besides, "knave" has some good meanings. You can call someone a knave in an admiring tone. Robin Hood, for example, was a knave. There's a semi-famous character in science fiction named Gerald Knave. The knight in chess is also often called the knave. Be proud of your surnamed avatar! They sure aren't likely to make any more of 'em!
  10. Sounds like one of those whaddaycallum, "undocumented features," also known as "bugs." I would file both a Support Case and a JIRA bug report.
  11. One point in addition to Amethyst's excellent advice: The "share group dividends and liabilities" ability is ON by default for all group roles. This can lead to group members being charged a share of recurring fees, which in turn leads to grumpy group members. It can also lead to the profits from a land sale being split between all group members, which in turn leads to a very grumpy group owner! Check this. It's down near the very bottom of the group abilities list under Accounting. In most cases, I recomment disabling it for all group roles except yourself, the owner.
  12. If in Firestorm, check to see if you have movelock on. Even if not, try cycling it...CTRL+ALT+P.
  13. Let's get our terms straight. Your username is the the name you entered when you first signed up for Second Life. It can never be changed, and there are no duplicates...the system won't allow you to pick the same username as one that's already registered. Your username must be one word, and can contain only letters and numbers. This may be what you're referring to as you "sl name." Your Display Name can be changed up to once every 7 days. You can have two or three names with spaces between them, and you can use numbers or special characters. But please, don't. Pick something that other people can pronounce. Anyone who wants to can see your Display Name, your username, or both.
  14. See my blog post, "Getting Started in Second Life - An Update"
  15. You must have had a payment method on file, either a credit card or a verified PayPal account, in order to get the Premium membership in the first place. Assuming you left that payment method alone and did not delete it, you should still be able to enjoy your Premium benefits during the period you paid for, even with a downgrade pending. If you can't, contact Billing at one of the numbers at the bottom of this post. If you DID delete your payment method...well, put it back! LL won't charge you for anything, and having a payment method on file allows you to do other useful things, such as visit Skill Gaming regions or upload Mesh creations. Exactly what was it that the Linden Home wasn't suited for? You can engage in intimate activities there -- all Linden Homes are on regions with a Moderate maturity rating. Just no public nudity (sunbathing on the front porch, or running naked through the community.) You can't build a skybox or a club, or conduct business activities, but that's about all. However, as the others said, you don't have to stick with a Linden Home, you can buy land anywhere else on the Mainland and you won't pay monthly tier on the first 512 square meters.
  16. It could also be that your registered credit card has expired, or that there was insufficeint money in your PayPal account.
  17. In addition to QuickTime, be sure the latest Adobe Flash is installed on your computer.
  18. I would use "booty" or "ass" as a search term. also, add the negative "NOT applier" Use NOT in all caps before the term you want to exclude. Otherwise, you'll get thousands of hits for texture appliers, not for the mesh products themselves.
  19. Make sure you have the latest versions of QuckTime and Flash installed on your computer.
  20. Are you qualified to upload mesh? You must have payment info on file, and take a short quiz on intellectual property issues.
  21. Try not using wireless to connect to your router. Use the old fashioned, but much faster and more reliable, ethernet cable.
  22. If Rolig's advice doesn't help, then try Advanced (CTRL+ALT+D if you don't have the Advanced menu on your top menu bar) and choose Release Keys.
  23. Follow KarenMichelle's advice. By telling your antivirus to quarantine the file, you broke your viewer installation, and since your AV software is now convinced that file is dangerous, it won't let it back onto your machine. For future reference, Second Life viewers seldom, if ever, have infected files in them. If your AV suspects one, do a lot of further research before telling it to take quarantine steps. It's much more likely that you have a "false positive."
  24. As KarenMichelle implies, you didn't tell us where you bought the $L. First, the erroneous display of your balance in your viewer: That happens sometimes, and it's no cause for alarm. The balance shown on the website is always the correct one, and the balance shown in world should correct itself the next time you log in. Now, as to the disappearing $L. This could be from a number of causes. First, check your Transaction Log on your Dashboard page on the website. It should show the transaction where you bought the $L, and then it should ALSO show the transaction where they were deducted from your account. What does that transaction say? If it shows a transfer to another resident, your account has been compromised. See this link and follow its instructions at once. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Password-and-account-information/ta-p/700017#Section_.5 (What to do if your account has been compromised) You may also have given an object permission to take money from your account. There are several of these in use by scammers. One is called "BONUS! Win up to $L10,000 (Wear and allow)" If you wear it and give it permission (click Allow) it will take all the money from your account. If you recall giving this permission to anything you rezzed, immediately go to that object and delete it from in world. If you can't do so, at least Abuse Report it, and the person who gave it to you. If your transaction log shows a correction by LL, then it's probable that you bought hot $L from someone...a non-approved $L vendor, or another resident. These $L were illegally obtained, probably by someone using a stolen credit card. If there is NO transaction shown in your transaction log to account for the disappearance, then you should call Billing to straighten things out. The numbers are below.
  25. You've sussed it! 351 prims, unless it's land on a private estate and the estate owner has set it up in some non-standard way. You can check your land's carrying capacity in About Land/Objects. Look for the number for "Parcel Land Capacity."
