  1. The Masocado Resort has, unfortunately, lost a friend and a long time resident. But our loss can be your gain! A large private bungalow is now available at the Resort. Unlike our condos, this home is on its own land parcel and is out of chat range of the neighbors. You can set your own music and media streams, too. It's really a misnomer to call this structure a "bungalow." Counting the lookout cupola on the top, it has FIVE stories. Below the cupola is a sunny rooftop...half is an open patio and the other half is a sunroom with glass walls giving a beautiful view of the open ocean in front and the Masocado Harbor behind Below this is a second floor for use as a bedroom area, and below that is the first floor, with front and rear doors and a raised living area where you can sit and watch the crackling fire. But that's not all, the bungalow has a hidden feature...an underwater basement. From here you can watch the sea life outside your windows...it's like living inside a huge tropical aquarium. The windows and entrance are concealed from the outside. There are two docks for your craft...one in front, and a spacious patio/dock at the back. This wonderful home starts at $L3195 per calendar month (a full month, not four weeks like you'll find some places) and a 400 prim decorating allowance. Additional prims may be rented with the approval of the management. Come see this unique Second Life home today. And when your friends ask you where you live in Second Life, you can smile and tell them, "Masocado, Baby!" http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Masocado/241/116/21
  2. It could be your computer. Even if it ran SL a couple of years ago, it might not be powerful enough to run today's Second Life. But my first suspicion, like yours, is that it's the router. The markings on that box imply that it's an amenity provided by the management of the apartments or hotel where you are living. Many buildings will block high data usage sites like SL to keep a few of their tenants from hogging all the bandwidth. To test, take your computer somewhere else and try from there. Maybe you have a friend who has a good, fast Internet connection. You can also check the speed of your internet connection with a free online tool like http://www.speedtest.net/
  3. I think the first thing to do is to sit down and have a little chat with your professor. Preferably along with every other member of the class there to give support. As Rolig says, there's no way that anyone can do either of the first two options in less than a semester, unless the entire class starts and runs a Second Life business as a group effort. That way, the work can be split up...some to create content, some to advertise, some to build a shop. Even a service business like club host can't be done quickly...because no reputable club owner will hire you until you've gotten your avatar looking good and have been in SL for at least 30 days. About the only "instant" business I can think of would be a photography studio, and even that would require that you have some pre-existing graphics skills with something like Photoshop. I'm wondering, has your professor ever set up and run a business in Second Life? I don't think he or she has the first notion of the effort involved. Your professor does, however, pose some very interesting questions for you to answer. A word of advice...the answers are NOT simple, you won't cover any of them in a short paragraph. Take a good, close look at SL and its businesses. Spend time in world, but also look for blog articles about SL and virtual worlds on the web. New World Notes is a good starting place. If you go the interview route, I would try to interview a cross section of SL businesspeople, for example: An estate owner/land baron An old, established clothing designer A new designer just getting started A club owner A DJ or a live performer
  4. First, try a couple of simple things. change your group tag change your hair base change your shape You can even try changing your entire outfit. Go to your Inventory, and in Library/Clothing/Older Outftis, pick one of the avatar folders, drag and drop it onto your cloud. If none of those things work, move to doing things to your hardware. Log out, and turn off your computer and your internet modem/router. Wait a minute or two, then turn everything on and reboot your system. Try logging in again, preferably to an empy water region like Pooley or Heckendorf. Wait a couple of minutes to see if your avatar appears. If that doesn't help, see these two links for other things to try. http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_bake_fail http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/
  5. Iva, Utopia is a very high quality, very expensive designer. They make great products but the owner does not speak much English. While they may be willing to redeliver the item to you, most SL merchants will not give you a refund, unless the item is No Copy and you can return it to them. They have all had more than one person ask for a refund or a copy for a friend just to avoid paying for it. You can file a support ticket in the Help/Support section of this website. However, LL will not get involved in a business dispute between residents. I'm afraid you are going to have to chalk this one up to experience. Richardus: Live Chat still works fine if you are Premium and it's during their hours of operation. But that won't solve the OP's problem.
  6. It's easy, but be sure you do everything in the right order. 1. Wear group tag for the current owner group. 2. Set land for sale to yourself at a price of $0 L 3. Remove any tier you donated to the group. You will get a warning message. Ignore it. 4. Change your active group to the one you are buying it for. 5. Use About Land/Buy for a Group button. You may also check Owner Makes Contribution With Deed, or you can donate tier to the group just prior to this step. 6. Heave a big sigh of relief.
  7. She may have deleted the accont. However, objects must still have an owner, so they will pull up the old information. Returning the objects should also make them disappear, although I cannot say just where they will go!
  8. There's a shortcut to do this. Look for the "Avatars" button on your screen. Choose from among the "classic" avatars, and you'll be able to edit them just fine.
  9. If you choose Blender as your 3D modeling software, you will soon hear of an add-on called "Avastar", which makes modeling clothing for SL a lot easier. The creator also has some great tutorials. For more information, see Nalates Urriah's blog.
  10. The special offer is over, but your friend should not feel bad. For one thing, unless you are SURE you want to be Premium, it's best to try it for a month or two on the monthly plan. If you sign up for a longer period, you get a lower price, but you don't get a refund of any unused time if you decide you want to downgrade partway through your membership period. Also, even though the 1/2 off offer saves you money for the first quarter, the price goes back to the full rate for subsequent quarters. Assuming you remain Premium for a year, the annual rate of $72 per year is still cheaper than the quarterly plan, even with the initial discount.
  11. She's still wearing the alpha mask for the mesh avatar...or at least, you are still seeing it on your screen. I've had situations where the alpha layer persisted in being visible...er, invisible...well, you know what I mean! until the avatar re-logged. You can't take off skin, shape, hair base, or eyes...the system won't allow it. Oh...and the default av is in Library/Clothing/Girl Next Door. Or Ruth, if you want an even older default av. Forcing a default av is also available through the Advanced menu, or sometimes through other menus, depending on what viewer you're using.
  12. emerald...to shorten Rolig's excellent and detailed answer, in a word...no. The mesh starter avatars are horrid, both in appearance and in the fact that they aren't editable. Encourage your friend to switch to one of the "classic" avatars that use the regular avatar shape. They can be adjusted with the Appearance sliders, and wear any skin and any type of clothing. Once she is fully conversant with SL, there will be plenty of time for her to decide whether or not to invest in a full mesh avatar body. However, be sure to tell her that the advantages these provide are (in the opinion of many) not worth the price or putting up with their complexities and drawbacks. The standard avatar can, with proper editing and choice of skin, hair, and clothing, look extremely beautiful.
  13. No, Chromebooks use Google's Chome OS, not Android. I don't believe there is a viewer that'll work with them.
  14. I don't think so, Rolig. I used my alt, Lynnette Weston, to make a purchase on the MP and it was successful. It showed the "payment method on file" was my $L balance. You might check Lynnette and see if she has a payment method on file (I can't see tthat, only the option to ADD a credit card or a PayPal or a Skrill account.)
  15. Huh? What's your question? OH! KarenMichelle made a lightbulb go on. First of all, SL Universe is a huge and cool web site, but it's run by an independent group and has no affiliation with Linden Lab. Give people there all the trust and respect you'd give anyone else anywhere on the internet. In other words, take what you're told with a grain of salt. Second, if you posted a question ANYWHERE...SL Universe, or here, or in some other chat forum, and you used your avatar name, then anyone could log in world, look up your profile with Search, and send you an IM. Depending on your preference settings, that IM would be sent to your email account if you are offline. So Serendipity did not necessarily steal your email address or anything.
  16. Valerie, that URL looks to me like it always did, and the Knowledge Base link is still under the Help menu, at least on my page.
  17. Unless you have designated different faces to have different texture maps, they are all considered one face, with a mesh object.
  18. Step One: Return the Chromebook. That machine is not nearly powerful enough to run Second Life.
  19. Have you set the Maturity settings for your alt? She won't be able to buy Moderate or Adult items or go to those places until you do.
  20. If you converted it in Blender, you're not uploading a sculpt, you're trying to upload a mesh object. Depending on the level of detail, the upload cost could be a lot more than $L10. Plus, you have to be qualified to upload mesh, by having payment information on file and by taking a short course in intellectual property. A sculpt is not an object, it's a sculpt map...a texture. You upload it like any other texture, for $L10, and then apply that texture to a sculpt prim object to create the sculpted shape in world. EDIT: No, you haven't wasted your time. Mesh is all the rage in SL, and in the future probably more things will be made of mesh than anything else. Maybe even EVERYTHING in the upcoming replacement for SL that the Lab is working on. So learning how to make mesh is a very good thing.
  21. As KarenMichelle and Innula rather gently implied, the reason you're not getting a fast response is not your class of membership, it's the stuff you're reporting. Or possibly, the WAY in which you are reporting it. If someone talks mean to you, or teases you, the solution isn't to run crying to LL. The solution is to Mute them. If someone is spewing particles all over the place, the solution is to turn off particles with CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+= If someone is rezzing ugly things or hundreds of physical cubes that are bumping into you, or shooting you with a gun, the solution is to ban them from your land, or turn off object creation. If you don't own the land, then go somewhere else, or sit on an object to become impervious to bumping. Above all, the thing griefers hate the most is being IGNORED. So...ignore them. If they are violating the Terms of Service or Community Standards, then Abuse Report them, sure. But don't expect Big Mom to come running and intervene. In Second Life, it's assumed you're a Big Boy and can take care of yourself.
  22. HAHAHAHA! :smileyvery-happy: I'm sorry, but almost every newcomer makes this mistake at some point. You were not "trapped" in your Atoll Hut, you were WEARING it. So of course, it moved around whenever you did. Just right click the thing and choose Detach. To find it again, look in your inventory, the button with a suitcase symbol or CTRL+I. Type "atoll hut" into the search text box at the top of the inventory window. Next time, go to a public sandbox somewhere and drag the hut from your inventory onto the ground. It will appear, and you can walk inside it, sit on it, or put furniture on the porch. You can't keep it there permanently, though...sandboxes have a "return time," ususally two or three hours, after which anything you've rezzed there is returned to your Lost and Found folder. To keep a house in world permanently, you'll have to buy or rent some land.
  23. You HAVE real breasts and a real ass, built right into your avatar shape. You can make them bigger or smaller with the Appearance sliders, and you can make them jiggle by wearing a "physics" clothing layer. There are lots of free physics settings. I'll send you one the next time I'm in world. Just wear it like any other clothing layer. The downside of the standard avatar shape is that you can't make it TOO extreme, and at the higher settings, your curves start to look rather blocky. However, the standard avatar has the great advantage that you can wear all types of clothing with it. Mesh breasts and buttocks can be made grotesquely huge and still look beautifully curved, and many of them also jiggle when you move. They do have a couple of serious disadvantages, though. They're expensive to buy, and they can only be used with clothing that has "appliers" for them, to paint the clothing texture over the mesh add-ons. They also have to be carefully matched to your skin tone, which requires either an applier from your skin creator, or a lot of tedious fiddling with a color HUD. Lots of us consider mesh breasts and asses to be cheap looking and artificial. It's all a matter of personal preference, of course.

They should clear up after a while. When you clear your cache, all the saved textures have to be downloaded again.
  25. Sometimes it's as simple as logging off and turning off your internet modem and router and computer. Wait a minute, then turn everything back on, reboot, and log in again. Sometimes it's not. See this link for other things to try: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_bake_fail
