I dunno, I took a picture at backdrop city a week or two ago. The backdrop I chose had holes in the wall and you could see the other backdrops behind it. So I rezzed a prim and put it behind the backdrop. Normally, I would slap some kind of image back there and go about my business. For some reason I thought “Why not try a pbr material on a prim? I’ve never done that before.” So I jump on MP and scan for pbr materials. Marketplace is absolutely flooded with cheap pbr materials btw. Which is great in this case because I wasn’t really willing to spend a lot for a small detail. I spent the 25L for something that claimed to be emissive. I clenched my buttcheeks and hit buy. Sure enough, I got the material and it popped right on the face and adjusting the glow worked with the slider. I didn’t need any special knowledge. It was as just like buying a texture and popping it on a prim. I did want it to be more…..glowy. I really wasn’t expecting it to work for 25 L, but I wouldn’t say this requires an advance degree to use or do. Another thing that turned me off: You have to pay for everything. Are you an adult? It costs $20 to get an adult badge. You want these jeans? They cost coins, but not the regular coins, the other coins..the ones you have to pay for. I hate two currency systems.

I started out on IMVU probably back in 2007 or 2008, back in the bobblehead days, I actually liked it a lot back then. This was before their mass migration to SL. I used to watch a show called Gossip Girl and it had a tie in with Second Life. People always remember CSI and the Office, but there were other shows that had tie ins that didn't make SL look terrible. I tried it out from there and was wowed. I kinda never looked back. A couple years ago, i tried it again, since I kept running into so many transplants telling me how awesome it was. First, I tried to reopen my old account. I couldn't remember any of my account details or my password or the email i used. So I started a new account and was instantly greeted by a bunch of popups and it triggered a migraine after about 1 hour. I logged out and uninstalled. People talk about how un-user friendly SL is, try IMVU and get back to me.

I typically don’t run into this problem. I’ve seen the script thing a few times, but I usually ignore it. The height thing I’ve never had happen because I’m usually taller than average. I’m 180cm (5’11) in real life, so it doesn’t feel weird to me to be taller. I have been to a couple clubs with some over zealous hosts or mod that go “Hi hun, you look lovely, but your dress is a little too short. Would you mind changing to a longer one?” I just go somewhere else.

…yet about six or seven times there’s a thread in the avatar section with someone asking where can they get a free head just in January and February alone

Yes, a lot of people use Lelutka and Catwa isn’t as popular as it used to be. That’s just how SL is. What was once a top choice, could immediately fall out of favor. We’ve seen that story play out over and over again. That being said, a lot of people never change their desired look. If you like what you have, stick with it. Just make sure you have the most up to date versions. Catwa now can use the EvoX UV which is huge for buying skins and Kupra has an Alpha hud now. You don’t have to worry about “running into yourself” with a less popular combo which is always a good thing!

I think this is a very common belief. I was talking to a guy that was caring for an autistic son. I think that’s very admirable, but he kept implying that he needed a woman to help him and maybe that woman was me. When I told him that was a pretty tough sell and not very likely, the IMing as soon as I logged on stopped, along with the romantic off lines. *shrugs* Theres been a few guys over the years that seem to have been implying they’d be willing to travel internationally for papers too. When I tell them I’m good with them being my online pretend boyfriend, the romance immediately stops.

I started seeing the chat thing a few years ago. It started with people meeting on SL to go play games on Steam. Which I thought was weird because Steam has a chat feature and a friends list. Then discord became popular. Don’t get me wrong I think Discord is great. It’s just weird to me to chat on another chat while you’re chatting. I'm not quite sure what you mean with the second one. I do know some people IM you, like as soon as you log on and then do this consistently. I assume they do the same thing to a lot of people and are juggling conversations or they’re just really doing something else in RL. I always wonder why do people do this. I’ll add one. I’ve noticed there’s been an uptick of people that are watching movies while they’re logged in. I guess, what’s most off putting to me is how inattentive people can be while having a ‘conversation’ with someone else. When I’m chatting with someone they have my attention. That’s not to say I haven’t juggled multiple conversations or went afk to cook or something. It’s just, some people aren’t very good at multitasking or try to multitask things they really shouldn’t imo.

You could try coffin shaped nails for the body you wear. They’re pretty common.

Well the test grid wasn’t exactly flooded with people testing out PBR, in my experience. I’m sure there weren’t that many people actually testing it out. Someone also pointed out, there probably was a bonus involved in getting it in a releasable state and released before 2024. I think the latter is the most likely what happened.

Also, are you using the Firestorm PBR viewer by any chance? There would probably be a difference in what you see between a pbr viewer and a non-pbr viewer.

It’s kind of funny. There’s a recent thread about stores that are white-out white. PBR will help eliminate issues with that. It’s one of those QoL things people don’t think about except as a peeve that will be gone.

Well, I mean besides most people not knowing about it the next thing people got out of it was “YAY! Mirrors!” When in reality all it is, is an improved rendering system. The truth is, the mirror thing is a novelty, that most people will play around with for about 10 minutes. I played with it for about 10 mins on the test grid and was over it. It’s not like you need it to dress your avatar, maybe for pictures? Clothing can be PBR right now! There’s going to be some wait time for creators to make real attempts at it. The skin and body thing I agree with. It would’ve been nice to have with this roll out. However, what I do know is subsurface scattering (the element that makes a rendered skin look more realistic) is more expensive to render. That could be why they left it out. The good thing about all of this is, the door is open for it to be added later! This opens the door for a lot of good things. It might not be a sexy improvement right now, but it has the potential to lead to some!

I think it’s coming from a couple of us complained about the previous couple of builds “running like crap” and mentioning how a PC’s graphics card fans are a lot more active now. The current build is running much smoother and my gpu isn’t spinning as hard. Or it could be typical Doomerism. Who knows?
