  1. Not a Kiwi, but I live in the same pet if the world, and I'm also looking for friends who I can see online more often. If you're cool hanging out with a kid avatar (I do have a bunch of adult friends, so I'm good with it), drop me a line.
  2. I don't feel that they necessarily are. A lack of physical contact and presence, mixed with missing communicative cues and carefully tailored conversations make it difficult to connect with people online to the same depth. That doesn't mean I don't care for my friends or RP family. I get upset when they've had a hard day or are having trouble. But I also almost cried during Toy Story 3 over the damaged relationships, trust issues, and impending doom. Rather, I would say that such relationships are merely different rather than weaker/stronger or good/bad.
  3. So what would this look like in SL? I'm a bit confused about what you are getting at. Are you interested in more religious content in SL? Do you want to see more natural disasters? Are you talking about whatever Sansar is or isn't?
  4. I got a Bio Breedable puppy for Christmas, and I'd like to do more with her. I know that I can rez her in my front yard and run around, but I thought it'd be great if I could take her for walks in other sims. I know about the switching sims issue (that you should pick up and re rez them), bit what if you don't have rezzing rights in a given area? Can you attached them and have them run at your side? Or is my dog stuck at home?
  5. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. You were bothering people and were reported to the sim owners for it. That you were drunk doesn't matter, nor does it matter if logs were shared; enough people complaining and you don't need logs to prove it. Walk away and own your actions. If you were bothering people and being obnoxious, you really aren't in a position to be looking down on people over a technicality.
  6. Innula Zenovka wrote: If you don't like Adult content, it's perfectly easy to avoid it. By default, your viewer settings are to show you G and M content only. I would beg to differ. There is a phenominal amount of adult content in the M category of the Marketplace, and I've TPed places where the store next door sells dick pouches, BDSM gear, and sex beds, despite being on an M sim. Staying to G and M simply doesn't filter out adult or offensive content. That really is what the issue here is. It's too easy to see SL as some slimey orgy pit and ignore what else it can be. Any coverage on YouTube is about trolling people and griefing, which doesn't show that SL can be used for therepy, to connect old and separated friends, learn new skills, appreciate art, and any number of other non-orgy related activities. Does that mean SL should be made kid friendly? No. Does it mean that there should be chances to show off the good sides of SL? Absolutely. Does that mean SL players will be able to stream on Twitch? No, because that content can't be controlled, and everyone playing SL knows that they will stumble into something inappropriate.
  7. I imagine it's the potential for adult rating. I did film ratings for a few years, and we always had to rate at the highest content to avoid trouble.
  8. What is there to do there (for a given location)? Is it a passive place with various sit-animated piece of furniture? Is it the scene of live events? Is it meant as a place to roleplay? Is it an art piece? A passive hangout area is fine, but if it's just another place to stand around and IM with your friends, I wouldn't appreciate it as much. If it's an event venue but there are no events taking place or events of interest, I'm not going to want to spend time there. If it's a roleplay area but no one is there or it is not condusive to roleplaying for whatever reason, I might just find somewhere else. If it's an art piece or an educational area like a museum, that might be really cool, but what would bring me back again after I've seen it. You want to think about why people are coming, what there is to do, and why they should return.
  9. It's a rather odd topic. On the one side, works should be left alone and be allowed to stand for themselves. To go in and alter a work because you can (or think you can) do a better job is a bit disrepectful to history. On the other hand though, what you've done is help breathe life into older areas. It also shows that new work can be faithful to the original while being upkept. This is done all over Japan, where historical buidlings are rebuilt and restored ever generation or so in order to keep that part of history alive. On the third hand, while it's cool to see old SL, it can be a little laughably bad. Seeing 10 year old structures hang around might give someone the wrong impression of SL and can kind of be an eyesore. I think that the original builds have a place, but I'm not sure if that's in a living sim. I went to a car show a little while back that showed off tons of old vehicles through the ages of SL. Something like this is a great way to preserve and honor the past while letting the future come.

  11. First off, there is nothing perverted about playing a kid. The only people that have an issue with it are stupid grognards or those who use SL for cybersex. If you play a kid, own it and have fun. When it comes to making a kid, there are basically two types. First you have Toddledoo, or TD. This is a mesh (externally 3d modeled) avatar that replaces your normal avatar. TD kids need special clothes that are rigged to fit their smaller body, since the scales for a normal body only go down so far. The second kind is a standard body. This plays within normal SL scales and is thus easier (in many ways, at least) to find clothes for. Whether you are sticking with a "standard kid" shape or a mesh body for older kids, the effect is the same. When it comes to standard bodies, you can only get so short and thus so young. SL really doesn't handle the scale extremes well, and I've found that about the youngest you can get is 8ish. From there, anything is possible; elementary aged kids, preteens, teens, and ever shape and size in between. The trick here is that you need to find or make a shape that has the right proportions. Sadly, a lot of people in SL make their avatar with really grotesque proportions (not just kids), and may shapes I've seen have tiny T-Rex arms. You also need a female shape (not hard), regardless of your gender, since males simply don't scale down that well. Making a kid, you'll want to look at some anatomy drawings. Body proportions, facial structure, that sort of thing. Depending on their age, kids have big eyes, heads that look large for their body (since the skull only grows so much), short limbs, and big hands and feet. I have some shapes I've been working on for a few older kid ages (I think up to about age 12) based on some proportion charts I found. I'd be happy to send them to you if you'd like. From there, it's about clothes. Vicarious Youth has a lot of freebies available, and more if you join the VIP group (VY also has a new avatar starter kit). Soken Mesh (SKM) also has a bunch of freebies available. There are a lot of other great stores too. The biggest issues here are that there is far more stuff for TD than standard kids and far more for girly girls than boys (if that's a concern for you), and that sometimes TD and standard kid aren't always well marked. I've bought a few TD shirts and have been mighty angry, though many sellers include kid and TD in the same sale. Feel free to message me if you'd like any more help. I do live in Asia though, so I might not ever be online. Also, if you can, please send me a notecard (since my messages get capped quickly and I miss things) or send me a PM over these forums.
  12. I think you have to make/use an animation that doesn't have any other bone movements. I'm probably wrong, but I've read something about only the animated bones being used.
  13. God yes. I hate navigating MP for clothes, since 95% of it is for babies and girls (two things which I am not). It's also simply a dump category that is generally hard to naivgate, compared to the better heirarcies seen with the adult categories.
  14. You do realize that playing a child avatar doesn't promote child exploitation. SL is generally pretty ok about child avatars, so long as they aren't in adult places. That people are harassing you about allegedly looking young means they are pieces of **bleep**. But that you are also begging on child avatars is also quite inappropriate. If you are playing a 16 year old, you are going to be treated as a minor because your character is a minor. You can choose to play in positive environments where this isn't a problem, you can continue to play in hostile environments and learn to deal with it, or you can change your character.
  15. MishkaKatyusha wrote: how all is sansar supposed to be different from sl? i just started getting settled into sl >.> What I've heard about Sansar is that it's more like a game engine for individual media projects, rather than a larger world like SL. Think of something like multiplayer Minecraft, where each instance of a server can be running different mods and content, completely changing the experience from one server to another. One server might be an MMO like experience while another is a Mario remake.
  16. Probably a bot or something. I don't know how that works in SL, but that sounds like it. I think some chat clients don't fully log you in to the point of having an avatar, so that could explain why you are seeing them but not seeing them.
  17. Bad families. I left/was removed from one over roleplay reasons. I play an adopted orphan and the dad, who turned out to have serious real world medical en emotional problems, couldn't handle me not calling him "dad," even though I was waiting for the mom to come online so I could stage it as a nice hallmark scene. He also started projecting real world problems on everyone else, and after it was decided that I would leave, the rest of the family quickly fell apart when they realized what he was doing. I also left a family after I was griefed by one of the other kids, They started a prank war and I did a single thing in response (bored up their playhouse with a biohazard sign over the weekend) and the whole thing blew up and became hostile. Good family. After the griefing debacle, I met a new family and immediately knew that it was going to work out. Aside from genuinely caring for one another and supporting one another in and out of game, there was a lot of reception to roleplaying and doing family activities. What did it for me was when we went to an amusement park and I roleplayed throwing up and getting sick. Following not finishing a RP hud meal and with hints dropped from the dad about seeing a doctor if I still felt sick, we played through the whole thing. Basically, if someone will let you pretend puke on you and roll with it, they're a keeper. And half a year later, things are going great. Ultimately, it's because of the family that I still play. I moved and don't get to log much when others are on, and it's been having a family that keeps me active (both logging and doing things in game). I think you should start a family. It might be tough or even hurtful to find the right people, but when you do...

This. I mostly roleplay, but I can break that up into more specific activities. I roleplay at school, which means learning how SL works and doing a little real world lerning and research. I roleplay with a family, which involves improv acting, telling joks, and a little problem solving. I'm in a Scout troop, which involved a little event planning and photography (shot composition, light levels, etc. Actual photography). Plus other rp stuff. And that's just RP. I'm getting back into 3D modeling and my Photoshop skills have improved considerably. I like to attend DJed and live musical acts. Digital art exhibitions seem like a lot of fun (I'm a museum nerd), and I'd like to explore options for language learning. All of these are things that don't involve lounging or dancing.
  19. Sweet. Mind hanging around with a dorky 11 year old? I do have some big person friends already, so it's not weird for me at least.
  20. I play a kid avatar (11, not a baby) and enjoyed a great wealth of comradery and activities before I moved to East Asia. Most of the activities I was doing and groups I'm in are all based on US timing, and due to the massive timezone difference, I just can't take part in them anymore. I'm looking for some friends and hangouts in the same part of the world to hang out with and help keep me interested in SL beyond the little bit that I can still do now. I'm still enjoying myself, but having some avatars to play with who are closer to my timezone would make me very happy.
  21. I've also been thinking about this. I like the RP aspect of clothes, so I take my shoes off when I walk into my house. I'd like to be able to layer like this for jackets, winter wear, and the dreaded socks. I think part of it is just someone making clothes that can layer. Not everything will (if I make an open hoodie, it probably won't fit over other people's shirts), but one should be able to easily make their own line of clothes compatible.
  22. I resonate that you and your friend should be critically looking at the listings in question. For example, I regularily flag BDSM items, **bleep** sleeves, and sex benches that should up in General, since these are items that should be in Adult and is probably a TOS violation to be inappropriately categorized. Has your friend miscategorized his/her items, improperly labeled their permissions, or done something else that would cause the items to be getting flagged? While it's entirely possible that someone is just flagging the items as a prank, I suspect that there is actually fault somewhere, unless your friend is one of the most popular and showcased builders and thus high profile enough to be trolled.
  23. How dare SL not look like Tron or some other 80's CG effect! I disagree that there is no individuality in SL, or that people stopped making content for it. If you spend 5 minutes looking at the number of options available, you"ll see how easy it is to build a unique looking avatar using the far better visuals offered by properly 3D modeled items. Yes, you require skill to make quality products, but mesh hasn't changed that. You still needed decent graphics skills to make good loking textures for items, and you needed some degree of modeling skills to make a prim object that didn't look terrible. There were people who surely got very good at these things, but there comes a point where the work you are putting into a video game should be even the slightest bit transferable. And I fail to see how the introduction of mesh suddenly translates to a need for programming knowledge sufficient to make your own game engine. Creating objects in SL has nothing to do with scripting, programming, or designing physics engines. Based on what you have said (I had to skim it, since I don't have a half hour to read a wall of text), I feel like you have missed the point of SL and whatever Sansar is entirely. The point of Sansar is to use transferable skills to create video game content. And the point of creating better content in SL is so that the game doesn't look 20 years old. System clothes tent to look terrible, making decent prim objects requires a set of skills that can't be used anywhere else, and scupted items really just seemed like a stepping stone. Why shouldn't SL be using the same extrernal software and skills that other forms of media and production use? Why should SL stay in the 1990's?
  24. As my wardrobe grows larger and more complicated, I find it increasingly difficult to change or add new details to my avatar. For example, if I want to change my shape or hair cut, or add a new accessory, I have to add it to each and every outfit, which can take a very long time or cause a mix up if I miss an outfit. I was thinking that it would be great if I could have some sort of base outfit that acts as a master to all others. From there, my clothes outfits are just those items. That way, if i want to make a change to a key feature, I onlt have to edit the base outfit. But I can't figure out how to do this. All I can do is save an outfit, then manually delete the links to things like the skin and hair, and then right-click and add the outfit to my current outfit. To problem here is clicking replace instead of add replaces the worn outfit, removing all those things like hair, skin, and common HUDs, which is simply going to be a nusance to keep going back and adding outfits and elements that I didn't mean to take off. Does anyone know a better way to do this to get the desired effect? Or is it a matter of making either complete outfits that are hard to globally change or making those separate and accidentally replacable outfits and just hope I get used to adding instead of replacing? Thanks
  25. 2GB is quite low. I was running 4 on a lower spec PC and needed to double it to be in an area with more than 3 people.
