  1. I really liked Nalytha's comments and I'm planning to use some of them myself, since I'm not really good at making friends, either. I'm not sure you will find friends on the forums. It is a great place to get and give information, but inworld I find that joining groups that share my same interests is better. Figure out what you want to do, then look for a group that shares that interest. One thing to be careful of, though, in the long history of Second Life many groups have formed and then become dormant. Click on the group and look for more detailed information - is anyone on the member list online? - are notices sent out regularly? If you are interested in building then Happy Hippos, Builder's Brewery, and Dreams Builders are good. Newcomers could benefit by joining NCI or Helping Haven. Gamers might like to join Mad Peas, etc.... Just going to concentrations of green dots is not always reliable. I always find piles of bodies at the Zindra Infohubs, but most of them are not looking for the same things I am. Hope this is a little help.

More specifically, what I might do about the green space that is in front of my house and touching the water. My land extends into the water a little bit, so that is up for suggestions as well. I'm extremely bored and I hope this is the right subgroup to post in. Thanks in advance! De gustibus...and all that. I think a lot depends on your personal taste. I had some RL software once, though, that created a little model of your house and then gave you little landscape items that you could move around -- sort of a paper dolls approach. You could use Linden plants to get an approximation of size and shape. In Second Life I look around to see what my neighbors have planted, based on my assumption (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) that it is easier for Linden computers to rezz multiple identical items than multiple different items. I also consider what my view from inside the parcel is, and what people see looking towards the property. I think horizontal yellow lines are passé, by the way...

Another way for you to find out would be to check the search function when you are in Second Life. If you don't get a lot of hits the first time try using another word, for example, if you were looking for railroads you might also try "rail roads" or "trains" or "RR". Also try http://secondlife.com/destinations - there is a sidebar that lists things by category. Off the top of my head, for vehicle racing there is a large area on Mainland near one of the public sandboxes, also a track near the Tower of Primitives. For snow sports there are a lot near the Linden Chalet in snowlands, but there is also a whole "winter city" just west of the snowlands, I think. You can get a free scooter at Sasstech, or a free bicycle or car at any of the Arcadia Allie freebie sites. Some of the islands in the Blake Sea area will give you free sailboats or kayaks (also at Linden docks near other sailable water). I'm not sure there are "state parks" as such, but if you visit Ross there is a poster that will give you a list of preserves. I've seen zip lines many places. I have on at Riverrun in Tethys, but I'm afraid there is a better one at Whimsy Kaboom. Have fun!
  4. Visit the Jungle Complete the quest in the White Islands. Catch a fairy in a jar or complete the mini-quests(2) at one of the premium subdivisions. Get a free sailboat and sail the Sea of Fables. Visit one of the Arcadia Alley freebie sites, get a free bicycle, and explore the roads on the Mainland. Take one of the Yavanna Podtours. Catch a ride on one of the SLGI vehicles. Go to a sandbox and see if you can build a house under 30 prims. Get a classic body and play with the sliders. Fly a plane. Ski. Ice skate. Get a free parachute and try jumping out at 3000 feet.
  5. Both prim and mesh houses have their advantages, and some builders use a combination of materials. I like prims because you can build on site and adapt the house to the shape, size, and terrain of the parcel, but mesh uses up less of your prim allotment. One of my favorite prim houses is the Porky Gorky Gecko I have in Cecropia, but I also have some mesh Chin Rey builds and some excellent houses by Barnesworth Anubis and others. Even though mesh usually uses less resources I would like to see everyone in Second Life learn to build with prims at least to the extent of being able to put foundations on their houses. I cringe when I'm travelling down a road in SL and pass a structure that is hovering a few feet off the surface. I'm trying to learn Blender, and hat's off to those who are skilled in its use.
  6. I wrote: Since you first posted this, I see some SL bloggers have also commented on this, but as far as I know, you [Prokofy Neva} were the first to notice these sims. Callum Meriman wrote: Tyche Shepherd listed them with a discussion on 25/09/16 which is some 2 weeks before Pork saw them. Thank you for the correction, I see it was noted in http://gridsurvey.com - I'm also assuming that Lindens and Moles knew about it. I'm looking forward to The Big Reveal. I hope I won't be disappointed.
  7. I read a suggestion from Marianne McCann that we might find clues in Patch Linden's Profile feed and on the billboards in Bay City. I guess I will have to exercise patience.
  8. Prokofy Neva wrote: Type HIH into the map and you will see: (that's the letter "I" not "1") It doesn't seem as big as a new continent, but it seems more ambitious than Linden Homes because it has large common areas, see the six sims put together in the middle. They are categorized "Adult" and you can't teleport to this area, it's closed. Linden Homes in "Adult"? More competition for all that unsold land in Zindra. Since you first posted this, I see some SL bloggers have also commented on this, but as far as I know, you were the first to notice these sims. My theories: The Lindens are building another "Premium" subdivision, but with more options for landscaping. The Lindens are going to abandon parts of the Mainland, and this is the reservation they've set up for the residents they've displaced.

Prokofy Neva wrote: ...............Kitely doesn't have geographic contiguity but I thought Inworldz did, at least I remember walking around a whole downtown area but maybe I missed something. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ I went back to Inworldz to check. Yes, there is a "Mainland" but there don't appear to be any small parcels you could buy directly from Inworldz. What looks like "Mainland" is actually larger sims owned by estate owners*. Purchase options appear to be either sim-sized parcels "on the Mainland" or more expensive "Islands" or groups of islands. Much less expensive than SL. Some of Inworldz looks very nice. I liked Yadni's New Orlean's Square, but it rezzed slowly while I was there. There is a sea you can sail on, but outside of the "Mainland" the islands are surrounded by what I call "The Great Nothing". On the plus side, there were two mentors in the Welcome Area when I arrived. On the negative side, I didn't like many of the builds I saw - perhaps having more prims makes builders lazy? *I once took advantage of a special deal where you could rent a 2048 parcel for about $5.95. You also got a periodic stipend. It did not work out well, and I ended up in a fight with one of the Inworldz founders before I cancelled everything...so please be aware I'm not unbiased....

I recently met someone who is new to second life and needs whatever help she can get to get started in second life. Also because of this, I want to learn how to help new residents who are getting started in second life or for those returning to second life. Some great places have already been mentioned. I would like to add Inspiration Island.http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Inspiration%20Island/107/109/22
  11. If there is anyone left here in the arena except the combatants, I would like to ask if you could tell me what you wish you had known when you first came to Second Life. I know my list has things like: Just because the viewer is the "official" Second Life viewer doesn't mean it is the best viewer for me, and Everything that looks blue on the map is not water, and It is always a good idea to teleport in flying mode, etc.... Just wondering...
  12. Prokofy Neva wrote: ......I don't think the owner of a sim who has bought it in good faith on the auction or from land barons should be forced to engage in the "public good" as the tiny percent of the population dwelling on the forums sees it. You can't expect people to tier empty road or sea at their own expence to help various Rail Tycoon types to live out their fantasies sending unmanned vehicles all across land they don't pay for.... _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Rufferta: My idea was that the Lindens could chop off a small channel on one edge before the land was put up for auction. Perhaps it would only make a small difference, but, should we live so long, I think it would improve the Mainland. Perhaps on the Mainland they should have set up "easements" ahead of time but that's easy to say now, looking backwards. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ As for Rufferta's idea that residents shouldn't build over Linden roads -- the reality is, they do. All over the place. This is hard to enforce. If you make Lindens globally enforce it, then you will lose things that people in fact appreciate that technically "encroaches". _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Rufferta: I think that you are correct. Many of us have builds that encroach on Linden land. I know that, ever since I learned about the "root prim" thing, I've made a few walkways so that folks could access my land more easily from the road. I think that that is different, though, than actually putting a roof over the road but I guess I can't very well claim that what I've done is any different. I've been visiting some of the "other worlds" like Kitely, Kraft, and Inworldz, and I think that the SL Mainland's 'sense of place' is something special and that the ability to travel from place to place by land, water, or air is important.
  13. ChinRey wrote: Recently Linden Lab seemed to have finally started to realize how important free passageways across Mainland is for the value of Second Life as a whole. But no. Quarter sim up for auction at Torver. Anybody who buys it is free to block the only possible route along the east coast of Sansara. All we can do is hope that the buyer cares more for Second Life than Linden Lab does. The Torver parcel sold at auction, and is now up for sale again. It would have been great if, before the land had been put up for auction, the Lindens had taken out a small channel on the far side and made it Linden Protected Water. I am grateful that sailors still have other areas to sail, but it would have added value to Mainland "waterfront" property if there had been a policy of preserving a protected channel in front of all "waterfront" areas. Surface roads are another issue. This post reminded me of an AR I had done some time ago. A landowner who had property on both sides of a Linden Road had built over it and you had to travel through an ugly dark tunnel if you wanted to continue on Route 2 in Burnott and Quaker. I went back, and the tunnel is still there. I realize that there is a precedent for this, in that many Linden Roads are routed through tunnels or even underwater, but somehow having a private landowner build around and on top of what should be public property seems unfair. Thank goodness most landowners that own property on both sides of a Linden road don't do this!

With rest stop and weigh station just like UK Motorway Autobahn Autoroute Autostrada Expressway and Interstate Freeway. Rather than LDPW. If you buy abandoned land, then you could put almost anything you want on it. Perhaps you could buy land next to an existing road to make a rest stop and weigh station? It sounds like a great project!
  15. I remember teleporting somewhere and falling through a phantom spot on the floor. I was stuck under that floor for what seemed like forever. At the time I thought I was being griefed, but realized later what had happened. I also remember that one of my first avatars, a dog, would rez unevenly, and I would find myself walking around with missing parts. I was griefed a few times - mostly pushes and particle porn, but when I figured out how to build simple objects it made up for all the bad stuff. Things are so much better now! (Although I still occasionally fall through floors).
  16. keysha033 wrote: I bought some land literally steps away from the beach. The actual beach is owned by a group. Seems to be just a hangout and the large tree border seems to be there to hide other land not as an actual privacy fence (which I don't see why there's abandoned land surrounding most of their property). They have nothing on their land besides the trees and some places to sit. All I need is one of the fences (the largest side of their privacy fence is made up of 4 individual screens) to be invisble from my side to get a wonderful view of the beach. Yes I understand I can derez the objects which I have, but I would like for others to not see it as well. I figured it never hurts to ask, but I don't want my new neighbor to think I am trying to be rude. If they want to keep the screen up I am completely fine with that. They have been there longer so it's fair. And I bought the property knowing it was there. What do you guys think? I don't want to offend them. The whole time I have owned this I have never seen anyone over there. On the other side of the fence that I would like invisble they don't have anything. Like I mentioned it seems like they use it for themselves to hide other land I don't want them to take it down just would like that one section to be made invisble on my side so I don't see how it could bother them? Please help. I know I could just go ahead and ask them but I don't want them to take it the wrong way and be upset. And if you do think I should ask how would you word it? Thanks :smileywink: It never hurts to ask; however, my experience is that groups are harder to deal with than individual property owners. In my opinion it is your neighbors who are being rude because they put up the ugly "privacy wall" in the first place. The only way to make sure you have "Property with a view" is to buy land right on the edge of Linden water. The Lindens sold off a lot of "water" parcels and often what we think is "beach front" is what Prokofy calls "beach back." Good luck.
  17. Welcome to Second Life! I'm not a fashionista - mostly I just lounge around in the avatar equivalent of a muu muu and carpet slippers. When I want to look dressed up I slip into one of Chin Rey's jelly baby avatars....I also have an old Ruth avatar in my inventory someplace. Seriously, though, to start out with, I suggest selecting a classic avatar, because you will have more clothing options. If you are less than 30 days old there are a lot of places that will give you free outfits. https://fabfree.wordpress.com/fabfree-30-days-list/ As you get more experienced you can try on different mesh bodies and parts. There are many excellent Second Life Fashion blogs. One of my favorites is http://strawberrysingh.com. I remember Phyllis Diller once suggested that if you were at a loss at what to buy in a grocery store you should just copy the shopping cart of someone who looks like they know what they are doing. Strawberry Singh is absolutely beautiful and she frequently lists what she is wearing in her fashion shots, so a person could just buy everything she is wearing and put it together. Whatever you decide, have fun!
  18. A steep learning curve? I think it all depends on what part of the elephant you are looking at. Just want to explore and chat? - relatively easy if you've played video games. Other goals are maybe not so easy to achieve. When I say that SL has a steep learning curve it is based on my own experiences. I'm still finding out things. It was only relatively recently that I learned you could move the sun around in the heavens and adjust DOF. I didn't learn these things inworld, I learned them by googling "how to take better pictures in Second Life". I still have problems opening boxes. I suspect those who assimilate easily are smarter than the average bear. Me, I'm only still here because I'm stubborn.
  19. We were doing a 'pile on' in the office one day when a friend stopped us short by saying "I try to see people as God intended them to be".* That's what I like about Second Life, I can be who I wanted to be in RL.. Try to cut the daft people in RL a little slack - one of them might be me. *Looking up the quote, I see it is from Dostoevsky "To love someone means to see him as God intended him." - Fyodor Dostoevsky
  20. I wonder if there is a term for "clicking on what you think is a road or other Linden land on a map and ending up instead in a nest of security orbs"? I like to explore, but every once in a while I mis-click and get booted home.* I remember there was a term in Huckleberry Hax' log " Droplosting : A complicated, yet devastating error which occurs when you’re trying to move an item from one folder to another and lose the mouse-hold at some point in between, thereby losing the item and having to look for it in every f....... folder." There ought to be a term for "inadvertent teleporting". *My thanks, by the way, to the one (1) security orb owner who set the boot point to a road near her parcel.
  21. No, don't ban Prok, even though I had to look up "John Ruskin". Don't know if I can post a link here, but thought there might be some interest in this BBC article about building the London Underground. Apparently getting transit right of way has been a problem for a long time.
  22. Rydon3 wrote: It seems to me that for a virtual world that has been in existence for 13 years, there is a shocking lack of documentation to assist future historians in assessing SL's true cultural impact. There are many blogs scattered around but few of these are comprehensive. Whole chapters of significant SL events, sims, builds, fashions/styles, locations and groups are at risk of being lost to history, unchronicled. We have already seen many, many such examples disappear - both inworld and from the wider internet. Should we be concerned that there is no exhaustive database which one can examine to catalogue the SL user experience, culture and history? Or is the lack of necessary documentation tacit psychic admission that SL is rubbish and barely worth preserving in memory? Tch tch....I don't think SL is rubbish and "barely worth preserving" - it just needs a good historian. Perhaps when the Wiki is again editable some long-term residents might like to publish their personal stories. I, too, am frustrated when I try to research SL's history. Why did Virtual Christine say that what we now know as Satori was at one time going to be called "Corsica"*? What was the purpose of the Tiny Isles Quest Hub on Redoubtable? What is the second easter egg? I guess some things will remain mysteries. *I asked Virtual Christine and she said she read it somewhere, but apparently that blog has disappeared.
  23. I can see both sides of this debate. I like railroads, and I was disappointed when I found that some of the planned Mainland lines were never completed because of different problems (like someone accidentally selling "right of way" land, etc...), but I also own land, and I know I would be upset if a Linden claimed eminent domain and decided to put a road right down the middle. One thought occurred to me, would it work to put the line underwater or underground?. For example, there is a nice long portion of underwater road starting in Seoraksam in Jeogeot (The "Slunnel"?) and real trains go through tunnels all the time. Just wondering,
  24. I love it! I never thought of trying them all on at once - that's awesome! Reply to everyone: Thank you for all the suggestions. Someday I will be able to figure out how to get dressed properly.
  25. I tried out some of the new fantasy avatars - I found that I was able to detach the rat pet and use it on a different avatar, with a little editing. I also found, when I was trying to change the mesh clothing, that the basic avatar also comes with alphas layers - I suspect that you would have to change the alpha layers if you wanted to change the costumes. I was wondering if anyone else had tried the new avatars, and if they have any recommendations for how to change the outfits..
