  1. I like the variation, too. "Never argue with a fool. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience" No idea who coined it.
  2. What would be the point of having a profile then? People who know me don't need my profile. People who don't know me would. I look at profiles to get a brief idea about the ava.
  3. I use Photoscape mostly these days. http://x.photoscape.org
  4. Wow, what a DA. I totally put this in the wrong thread. Ye without sin........
  5. As to the "why" question: I think, like the emoticons in forums, people enjoy seeing who reads what they write. Unlike here, that doesn't happen in SL unless someone directly responds by IM to the writer, as several of you have pointed out. I had a friend who in her profile had: "Don't f*** with me. I'll throw a thunderbolt up your a**" She got IMed a LOT about how aggressive that was. She was fine with that.
  6. Another I like is attributed to George Orwell: : "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." In reality, Orwell never said this is that exact form. The earliest use of the misquoted phrase was in an essay Orwell wrote on Rudyard Kipling in 1942: "Orwell cited Kipling's phrase 'making mock of uniforms that guard you while you sleep' and further noted that Kipling's 'grasp of function, of who protects whom, is very sound. He sees clearly that men can be highly civilized only while other men, inevitably less civilized, are there to guard and feed them.' " In either form, I like the phrase.
  7. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt." This quote is often attributed to Mark Twain or Abraham Lincoln. In reality it's origin can be shown to have been changed to its more modern form from the Bible. Proverbs 17:28 from the King James version: "Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding. I think the transference from the Biblical quote to its more modern version does not change the weight of the thought.
  8. Chalumeau Clarion Chalumeau is the lowest and most beautiful register of the modern clarinet (my instrument). Clarion is the name for the high register for medieval trumpets (also the middle register of the modern clarinet from which the clarinet gets its name). Unique
  9. Because it goes back to the game rugby that was and is played in the British Isles. They just kept changing the rules and techniques in the States. Early forms of rugby go back to the 1600s. EDIT: Why would call it "hand-egg"?
  10. Some players in college who never make it to the pros (like 99% don't) have become world renowned doctors, head of Universities, too many others to be mentioned. For some it's a way to get an education that sustains them their entire life. Neanderthal is a bit harsh.
  11. I can't say why it is or isn't. I know I don't like it
  12. Why do my students say. "Really?" when I tell them something. Me: "We will meet at 5:45" Lil Sally: "Really?" Me: "No, I was kidding. Yes, really."
  13. From what I've heard and read about Secretariat he would keep running if his rider fell off.
  14. I never said MLK day was stupid. I said school board trying to be woke are. SMH
  15. Chroma, what you said reminds me of the D.H Lawrence quote: "I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself." Which is the crux of what makes humans different. Humans would fight and struggle to survive whereas the bird, or frog in your example would not.
