NSFW on profile

Recommended Posts

Hey there,
I have a question and not sure where else to put it, so here it goes:

I know profile pictures are supposed to be general - but what about picks? Do those need to be general as well? A lot of sims that might be thrown into one's picks come with NSFW content from the get-go, so I'm not sure how that is handled.

They should honestly make it so that you can set your profile to adult, and have a confirmation to click through if going to an adult profile. Or you can opt out of seeing adult profiles like how you do with sims you search for. There's so much adult focused stuff on SL that this kind of ruling feels kind of outdated honestly.

That is a great idea.

There should honestly just be a way to make your profile rated G, M, A because adults are going to be adults no matter who complains about it.

At this point, it's not fair to try to force others to generalize their profiles, when the most popular thing in second life is the Adult content. It's the biggest over all group and what draws in the most people.

If your stuff has mature or Adult stuff, the system should pick that up and label your profile as M or A.

I don't know why people go snooping inside of picks, especially when I see several people put "Warning, adult content." in their profile. You'd have to be actively looking most of the time.

My 2 cents: Adults should act like adults.
It is always good to keep profiles general. They are public sources. Whether it is Facebook, linkedin, X or Second Life or wherever.
One only has one chance to make a first impression.

From what I understand, web profiles (not inworld) are viewable to anyone, even those people that do not belong to second life.

They don't want to put the face of second life porn out to the general public.

We are squeaky clean doncha know (or LL wishes we were)

Most of my picks are political. I have no interest in promoting anything except myself, certainly not some XXX club I might hang out in.

It wouldn't surprise me if LL one day banned political content in profiles.

I don't think most people introduce themselves somewhere at a meeting, in a shop, at a club, library or other in public places by passing around cards with their sexual preferences and showing around pictures of their 'naughty' pleasures in life.
Because of the same principles, it isn't a great idea to do so in Second Life either.
Most people really aren't sex orientated 24/7 in Second Life.

I applaud that LL demands that the profiles are G-rated only.

LOL, actually, if you touch my ears, you get a notecard that does exactly that 😂

Being brutally honest, I've always felt that putting straight porn on ones pfp to be a little bit tasteless.

I think there's a difference between enjoying adult activity and turning it into a vulgar fashion statement that everyone has to see at the mall.

That's the beauty of my way, no one HAS to see it.

My floating text says "Touch my ears to see what I like"

If the guy is interested in long romantic walks in the moonlight, or cuddles by the sea, we won't be a good match, and reading the notecard will save both of us wasted time.

Of course people with terminal TDS might freak out over my profile when they read the picks, but for everyone that ims me and calls me names, another IMs me to say thank you 😁

Snooping?  Um, ok.  I always thought profiles were public and people put stuff in there so people WOULD read it.  I do the the "adult content" warning now and then but most people with adult content in picks don't have a warning.  Anytime you do open a profile, you are actively looking.  That's the whole point.

Years ago, I did see a profile that was marked as adult.  I don't recall how I noticed that but it was from the website.  I believe it was triggered by words in the content because I know it's never been an option to choose.  If it was done before, they can do it again.

They do. Picks used to be used as a way to advertise a sim/store/build/place you really liked, and I still see a lot of creators and merchants using them to advertise their own places. Then it became a good place to throw funny quotes and poetry and song lyrics and ramblings. Saw a bunch used them to broadcast their personal likes/dislikes/wants. Some vent about exes. Some dedicate Picks to friends.

Or if you're like my friends and I, your buddy Photoshops your avatar into a shot with David Hasselhoff with hearts all over and a big ole "I LUV DAVE" banner and you toss that in Picks to show everyone how much your friends hate you. 😂 Man, I miss those days when we had way too much free time.

Picks generally should be G-rated, too, though. Probably because of the web profile thing.

I am honestly confused (no snark!):

- My understanding is that "Picks" reflect a person's interests. I thought those were generally groups, Regions, places, etc.

Why wouldn't it be OK to have "Adult Picks"?  (It's not like posting links to RL "pornography" sites, or posting RL nude pictures.)

The way I look at it:   If the "Pick" reflects something "allowed by the TOS" that is actually within Second Life, anything should be allowed.  If someone doesn't like what is in your "Picks" then..sorry?

Please help to correct my possibly misunderstanding!

It's a case of the information being kind of all over the place and not very detailed, at that.

We can't really answer that. The Lab would have to elaborate.

As some have already mentioned picks are advertising tools. If you've been in SL long enough you might even remember when some merchants offered  rewards to people who listed the business in their picks. So, thinking it odd for people to read picks of "strangers" in SL doesn't make much sense, IMO.

As for me personally, I used to put "reading profiles" as one of my talents. We don't have that page in our profiles anymore though. I have run across some real eye openers through the years. I don't think I ever really paid attention to the fact that having adult content was against the TOS until very recently. There have been some that I might have ARd had I been aware.

I came across one with a pic of a very violent looking r*pe. Blood and gore with three men on one woman. Pretty sure that isn't allowed. I have come across many with graphic sexual violence in the picks of profiles through the years.

Yeah, confusing.  It "implies" no links or info on Adult groups or places in Second Life.

But generally, I think the "intention" is that there is no Adult "text" (dirty talk, cussing, etc.) or "pictures" (nudes).

I guess people can't use their profiles for advertising the Slex services. Poor [redacted names]!

Well, considering a Pick is a landmark to land, and land can be Adult rated, I would think it should be fine for Picks to be Adult rated as well. Especially since they are not immediately visible when profile is opened.

Since you are able to change just about everything in a pick, you should be able to change any picture, name, or descriptions from a location you want to add to your picks and keep within TOS I would think. I can't see anywhere in the TOS that a tp to an adult rated land can't be in the picks.
