Question

Was wondering if anyone could help me figure out a way to run SL smoothly. I usually have no problem in places with not a lot of people/stuff. Like in a skybox I get good fps but whenever i go to a busy event or a club my SL lags like crazy even with max complexity at lowest and lowest draw distance. My specs

Motherboard:   PRIME H310M-A R2.0   Version:    Rev X.0x
Operating System:    Windows 10 Home
Processor:    Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-9100F CPU @ 3.60GHz   3.60 GHz
Installed RAM:   8.00 GB
System type:    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Graphics:    NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1650

Storage : Local Disk C; 305GB

New Volume D; 740GB

In the viewer, click Help and then About.  Copy the info and paste it here.  Then we might be able to point out some settings that could be tweaked for a better SL experience.

As Istelathis says, for crowded places where your fps drops, disable the Advanced Lighting and things should get much better.

When you are at a club, you can probably also put that draw distance down quite a bit lower.  Most clubs are not 100m is size.  Lower it to roughly the size of the club, so that you are not trying to rez anything more than the club and the things/people in it.

This prolly part of your issue.

Also (I'm not sure if this is just a Firestorm thing), but some people, even if they are far away from and can't see the SL water,  get better performance by disabling it.

When I am hurting bad for FPS, I might even lower my draw distance to 32 meters.

Thanks for the tips! Also wondering if there is anything I could do/purchase to make it even faster?

If there is any way you can add RAM, add another 8 GB.  If you cannot increase RAM, then definitely keep all other apps closed while running SL.

While the CPU isn't a High End one, it on the higher end of the Mid Range listings, so not horrid.

Which viewer are you using?  The default SL Official Viewer or a third party viewer?

I usually use either firestorm or alchemy

Right click on your screen area (not in the viewer, just the regular windows screen area) and select Display Settings.  In the window that opens, scroll down on the right side until you see 'Advanced display settings' - click on that.  On the next screen, click on 'Display adapter properties'.  That should pop up a new small window and in the lower half you should see "Dedicated Video Memory".   What is that value?  You can possibly increase your 'Texture Memory' setting (in Preferences/Graphics/Hardware Settings) depending on what your GPU has.

Here is the Firestorm page that talks about that setting -- scroll down to the Hardware Settings section:  https://wiki.firestormviewer.org/preferences_graphics_tab

It seems like your hardware. This is mine for comparison, and I think mine is a tad bit overkill. Lol

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz (3408 MHz)

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit (Build 19045.2130)

Apparently, my motherboard can have up to 64gigs of ram. xD

I have the same graphics card as you and a comparable CPU but with 32GB of RAM and it works fine for most places with only shadows and transparent water disabled.

Try these settings under PreferencesGraphics:

  • Set graphics settings to Ultra and then:
  • Set shadows to: None.
  • Set water to: None (opaque).
    • This makes a big difference even in skyboxes with no water in sight.
  • Set draw distance to 200m or less.

Also these tips might help:

  • Hide HUD whenever possible (press Shift-Alt-H to toggle).
  • Click WorldShow Friends Only when entering crowded shopping events.
  • Close resource heavy applications such as a browser with many tabs open.

With these settings I get around 30 FPS in super crowded areas after the initial loading settles but typically I get around 60-ish with a maximum at around 100.

I'm using Firestorm 6.6.3.67470.

Is there a setting to unlock the fps ? I have a high end pc and cannot get past the 60fps even in empty places .. :(

If you have PreferencesGraphicsHardware SettingsEnable VSync checked then that could limit FPS to 60.

Thanks, it worked! In the usual sim i am in i had 60fps, now i am between 90 and 120fps! ♥

Edit: i had 120 FPS limit turned on, now i get 140-160fps!

Hmmm...  That's pretty low.  I think LL is recommending at least 8 GB.

Not for VIDEO memory -- 4 gb is decent enough for the GPU.  Her earlier stats did show 8 gb of RAM, which is the minimum requirement.

You should be able to bump your Texture memory up to 2048 (in Preferences/Graphics/Hardware Settings).  That can help speed rendering of textures a bit.

Ask 20 people how to improve FPS, get 20 answers.

Personally I'd never disable Advanced Lighting except as a last resort on utterly potato machines, because so much stuff uses ALM's features that it destroys the look of the scene.

Fortunately, you can gain almost, or in some cases just as much FPS by disabling shadows, and setting water to none(opaque). Also the usual applies about things like rendering only friends (but be aware you may walk into people or get unexpectedly bumped), or setting max number of non-imposter avatars to a lower value. Draw distance is also a big factor if you're on the mainland or a large, busy region or linked set of regions.
