You're going to be overwhelmed by repleis from people recommending their own personal favorites but you really ought to give a little bit of details. Like which gender is your avatar and what general style are you looking for? My best advice to newcomers is do not spend a single Linden on avatar thingies the first month or two. I think that is good advice for people returning after a long time too - things have changed so much. Look at what the Free Dove has, then look for group gifts and MM board prizes and such and also of course freebies on the Marketplace. Unless you want a mesh body (they are never free) you can put together absolutely marvelous avatars with only freebies. There are so many options available to you here, not just in your look, but what you do with your time. The only money you should be spending for the first little bit should be on groups (so you can get group gifts or join a big hunt). I made an avatar with a few outfits for about 50 lindens, with the exception of the hair (which I think was only 100 or so). You're going to be bombarded with freebies and new ideas, so there's no real point in spending a ton of money until you've settled down. As an aside, if you were to play a child, it actually is possible to get a mesh avatar and a full wardrobe for free. There are some pretty cool creators supporting the kids market. It's what you would be into as for your style. My example: I like blues, and sometimes pink, ruffles and cute stuff. Then there's the other side of me that likes dark & twisted clothes lol... Among the accessories that you can get (horns/tails/ears etc!) I mix n match as well which is fun to make different outfits and I would agree with "do not buy anything linden wise using real money for maybe a month or two" because sl can get kind of boring if you have no friends. Freebies/gifts: there are freebie places all over sl, just go to search and put freebie and hit enter it goes the same for gifts. There is also groups on facebook/Flickr that shows were gifts are!
