  1. Giveaways, in one form or another, have always been a part of SL. They have been abundant enough to keep at least one website, Fabulously Free in SL, which has been around since 2007, busy. To paraphrase Shakespeare, a rose is rose by any other name. Whether you are doing a contest or a hunt, or whatever, it's still a freebie. This is what marketing does. When one strategy begins to be not as successful, they repackage it with a little bit of tweaking and call it something else. The economy also plays a roll of course. But I'm constantly hearing about that too. We've had ups and downs for decades. It comes with the territory. I just choose to not get my panties all in a twist over something that is likely just speculation, and even if true, there's really not much I can do about it. Life is too short for me to care.
  2. I've had this happen to me so often that it's changed my behavior in SL. It didn't happen too frequently, but often enough that I started saving my shape numbers on a notecard so I could retrieve the numbers to make a new shape in case the shape went missing. What I found was that sometimes if I teleport after changing my shape or tinting clothing before relogging that the changes didn't get saved in the asset server for whatever reason. For awhile it was so frequent that I was remaking shapes often and it was frustrating. So, I decided to relog anytime I tweak my shape or make a new clothing item by tinting the item. Since I've started this practice I've not had it happen again. By the way this has been going on for me for years.
  3. I'd be more likely to not trust the info on those "other" sites, than to believe that the majority of the give aways are fake. It's been quite awhile since I looked at any of those sites but when I used to watch them consistently, I saw lots of creators being accused of copy botting when all they were doing was using full perm items bought and used according to the user license agreement. Seeing that so often really put me off on those sites.
  4. Addams has been doing this for years and years. Blueberry used to do it through people posting stuff in FB. I'm not sure if she is still doing that though as I no longer follow anything in FB. Those are two that come to mind. But there are others who also have used this tried and true marketing strategy. Perhaps you've just become aware of it or it's gotten more popular with other creators.
  5. Not too long ago I had a similar circumstance. When I switched Debi over to a Legacy Perky body I noticed something odd with my camera angle. I'd use the normal tools to get the camera offset the way I liked it but it kept switching back to an odd position for me. I hadn't noticed this on Blush or any of my other alts. Come to find out the Legacy body HUD had kidnapped my camera. I eventually discovered something on the hud that gave me back control of my camera. Apparently, I had accidentally clicked on the little camera icon on the bottom right of the Legacy Hud. So if you are using a Legacy body perhaps that is the issue. Just an fyi.
  6. While this is true in Belli, and other areas where parcel size does not change, ie. Nautilus City, if you try this on mainland you could very easily end up in someone's home. So region center 128,128 is not always protected land.
  7. I took a class for Mesh Studio at Builders' Brewery before buying the tool. There are definitely tricks to using it. But it can have issues when it comes to LODs. It doesn't matter all that much for objects that won't be seen from a distance, but for those things like add-ons it can be a problem.
  8. This is such sad news. Back in 2008 or so, I messaged her about something to do with a purchase and somewhere in the conversation mentioned I had a small jewelry store but was trying my hand at creating clothes. She spent quite a bit of time encouraging me and suggested software that would aid me in that goal. After that first conversation, we had a few more over the next couple of years. She was so generous with her time and encouragement. RIP Ivey. You are missed!
  9. I've used Mesh Studio for years. Though when bento came out, and I wanted to be able to rig the rings I had been making using Mesh Studio, I had no choice but to learn Blender. I am really happy that I had such motivation because I never would have put the effort into learning Blender otherwise. All that said, I still use Mesh Studio often. I love building with regular prims. I thoroughly enjoy manipulating prims, in world, and creating something I've imagined in my head. So I use both. When it's really important that the mesh be "clean", I'll open up the file in Blender and clean it up and make my LODs manually. I've not had any experience with Mesh Generator, but I believe they are comparable. I'd encourage you to try one of them if you love building with prims but want lower LI for your projects.
  10. I love a good rainstorm. Some years ago my partner built me a rainstorm in a skydome. That way I could have the joy of sitting and sipping tea in the rain but it didn't bother any of my neighbors on the ground. That might be a good alternative for Belli.
  11. I did miss that part. Though, as I mentioned in a previous post that I did try filing a ticket long ago on some land I thought was owned by someone long gone from SL, but nothing came of it. It never hurts to try though. I just wouldn't get my hopes up on getting land that seems to be owned by someone who is no longer active in SL.
  12. In all but one of the cases, the land had been claimed back in 2004. I'm pretty sure those lands were claimed by those who were part of the beta test and had the option to pay for lifetime memberships that included land, so the owners don't need to pay any tier or log in to retain their lands. I totally understand why the Lab would not try to reclaim those parcels. Should those lifetime members decide to return after being gone for a very long time, their parcels should be there waiting for them. In the other case, that land appears as though the owner hasn't logged in for years, but I'm sure tier is being collected on that land. Though I have no desire to obtain any of it now, I still run by there every so often just to see if anything has changed. It just amazes me that someone would own nearly a whole region and just not do anything with the land and appears to not be logging in. But we all have our own motivations for how we use or appear to not use our land. Back quite a few years ago, I watched nearly a whole region, which had been owned by a rental company, get reclaimed by LL. It was an interesting situation. The owner just stopped logging in, or so it appeared. The renters couldn't get in touch with the owner nor were rents being collected. Some decided to just move to another location fearing that the hammer was going to drop so better to get into something else instead of waiting. Others stayed on because it was free. But soon enough the land switched back to Linden owned and the tenants were given notice to find something else. I don't know if anyone who actually owned land in that region tried to obtain any of it by filing a ticket, but if my memory is correct, the land was eventually auctioned off.
  13. From the material you linked, you can find the following: Abandoned land is owned by Governor Linden and contains the term "Abandoned Land" in the parcel name. The parcel description often includes the name of the previous owner. Land that is owned by another Resident is not abandoned, even if it appears to be unused. Therefore this policy does not apply to the land asked about by the OP. I have been in the same situation a few times during my many years owning land in SL. Unfortunately, in all those circumstances, I was never successful in obtaining the desired parcels. Before I understood that the Lab won't intervene in such a circumstance, I filed a couple or so tickets hoping the land could be released since the owner seemed to no longer be in SL, but I learned quickly that the Lab does not do this kind of thing. So eventually, I gave up hearing from the owner(s), sold my land, and purchased in another area that suited my needs more adequately. I hope you have better luck than I had, but if not, perhaps it's time to look elsewhere.
  14. I like what I call the lived-in look. It's somewhere between tidy and messy. For instance, the sponges and dish soap in the kitchen of a tidy home would be hidden in the cabinet below the sink, with a messy home having dishes piled in the sink, whereas a lived-in home would have an empty sink or possibly a few dishes in the sink but the sponges and soaps would be setting on the counter next to the sink. I'm all about making my homes feel as though someone actually lives in the space. It used to be impossible to achieve that look because we simply did not have the prim allowance to spend on such things, but now with mesh having such low LI values we can afford to have what appears to be real lived-in homes.
  15. Try using the exterior siding texture from the Stilt Content Pack and turn it 90 degrees. Here it is compared to the new houseboat. You can see in the middle it's a near, not 100%, but pretty darn close. The baked in ambient occlusion though on the homes is apparent as the shading changes at the edges.
  16. If you don't want to be bothered with joining a group or renting a little cheap flat, you can simply pick one of the hundreds of LL rez zones scattered throughout the world. Take a landmark of that rez zone and drop it on your favorites bar. Then you are one click away from tp'ing to that rez zone where you can unpack boxes or change clothes. If you pick a zone that is underwater you kind of have privacy as well. Think of it as an underwater changing room.
  17. I love the new houseboats! I too have chosen the Dock Holiday. I landed a really beautiful parcel with open views to the ocean and a lovely stream just outside my front door. I've barely started to decorate, but I'm loving my start to Christmas in a houseboat.
  18. In about land, be sure the media tab does not have a url listed. Media oftentimes will play automatically unless specifically set to not play in preferences.
  19. The first time I visited Disneyland was back in the early 60s. Believe it or not admission was only 5 bucks, but you had to buy ticket books to ride the rides in addition to that entry fee. I remember as a child wanting the big book but my parents could only afford the small book of tickets. By the time I was a young teen, I remember my sister and I planning our day based on how many tickets we had and how busy the park was that day. Budgeting our tickets and time was a good life skill lesson. Ah the memories!
  20. I grew up in California and going to Disneyland was a yearly trip from the time I was around 10 years old. So, I'm a Disney lover, but I have to agree that the prices are just too high for most people these days. I've wanted to take my grandkids to Disney but I just can't swing the price. As for Second Life, I've been fortunate that in the past twelve years or so I've not spent any RL money on SL. I remember someone telling me their motto many years ago that SL pays for SL. I took that to heart and opened a business. I have been a premium member with at least one premium since 2008, oftentimes having more than one premium with as many five premiums at one point, but my SL business has paid for all my expenses in SL. I know that's not possible for everyone, especially now. But I can honestly say that with all there is available for free in SL a person who simply does not have the money to spend can still have a fabulous SL with zero purchased lindens. I've known quite a few people who have financed their SL, including renting a small home, from their hosting tips alone. And on the other hand, I've known many who spend small fortunes here in SL. I think that's the beauty of SL. It is what you make of it with or without money.
  21. Do they? I keep hearing people say they are canceling their Disney vacations. And I just read an article last week saying Disney plans hiring freeze, layoffs and cost cuts, according to a memo from CEO Bob Chapek. A company has to do what's in the best interest of the company or people loose jobs and sometimes, unfortunately, companies go out of business. So It's a careful balancing act. You have to keep your customers happy, but you also have to pay attention the bottom line to stay healthy. I think the Lab has done a pretty good job balancing benefits verses costs. Plus no one has to pay one single penny to enjoy Second Life if they don't want to.
  22. Making makeups for the EVOx heads is super easy and FUN. Give it a go. No one knows what you want to look like more than you do. So if you're handy with PS or Gimp, grab that dev kit and start creating. But be warned it can be addicting! Using local textures while you're developing the textures is nearly like drawing directly on your head as well. Think of the money you'll save making your own as well. Develop a look using local textures and then upload the final look for 10 lindens .. when was the last time you bought a new lipstick in SL for 10 lindens?
  23. Yes, in theory BoM supports it but in reality it doesn't. It's a convoluted mess trying to make them work. I've tried and gave up, and I've made lots of BoM stockings so I know how the process works. Sometimes things are just too complicated and take too much coordination between creators to get a thing to be worth the work around. In the years since BoM was released we've not seen any adoption for using the universal layers for asymmetrical tats ... the proof is in the pudding. It DoesN'T work!
  24. I'm very happy with my EvoX head. Switching to the new head UV has not been an issue at all for me. I just bought a new skin plus a few makeups, so it was an investment to make the switch, but it wasn't a lot of money, and the result to me is far superior to the appearance of my older heads/skins. And I finally really love the appearance of my ears! I don't think we'll be seeing any head makers steer away from using the new Lelo head UV any time soon. I agree! I'm totally not happy with how the SLUV works for the body. I really do not like having only one arm/hand/foot. The addition of the new universal layer included with BOM was supposed to make asymmetrical tattoos for arms, hands, and feet a possibility. So far it has not worked. I love tattoos. But as long as I have to have matchy matchy tats for my arms, it's a problem. Even with having the ability to use add-on tattoo layers to get around the problem, it's still an issue because then we have the oh so prevalent alpha glitching errors not to mention the added complexity of wearing an additional layer of mesh. I'd jump on the chance to have a more functional body using standard BOM layers for asymmetrical tattoos. Plus just imagine having inner thighs and ankles without unavoidable texture distortions. Of course wanting something doesn't negate the fact that it's not likely to happen. Just my two cents.
  25. You won't find it individually in your inventory. It comes with the cabin and all the deco in one coalesced object. As for it being less of a prize, because a version of it was given as a limited offer gift once before, that's just plain silly.
