  1. That worked, thank you so much for your assistance.
  2. I downloaded the new Second Life viewer for Mac as required last time I logged in, 3 days ago. Now Second Life looks like this. I have no idea how to fix it. i was hopping hey would update the fewer to corrrect it, but they have not done so. Is anyone else experiencing this strange problem? When I use the Firestorm viewer everything looks perfectly normal.
  3. https://saltlickbbq.com Pretty close to my IP address location. I recommend a couple pounds of the brisket!
  4. I've been in SL since 2005, exploring the grid has always been one of the more enjoyable things to do in SL. And its constantly changing, which sadly means many of my favorite places are no longer. But there is always something new and interesting to see.
  5. I'm throwing away everything in my files created by Starax Statosky after reading this.
  6. Looks like you missed the SL files in the "Library->Saved Application State" folder that Madealine (sp?) described. I have no idea how important they are but have never seen them mentioned in doing a clean install before.
  7. In the past when the black areas, that normally indicated objects owned by others, turned a dark reddish tint, it usually meant I had crashed and I could verify that by trying to move and find that I could not, had to relog. For several months now I have been noticing those same parts of the mini-map turning red and finding that i have not crashed, I can still function normally. So does anyone have any idea what the dark reddish tint means these days? Thanks, Arch
  8. All I have every used in SL has been a wireless laptop, a Mac of one type or another. I'm currently using a 2011 MacBook Pro. I have built hundreds of creations on my laptops while connected with WiFi, I had experienced many quirks but still managed OK. If your machine specs meet the minimum standards recommended by SL you should be OK.
  9. If the HUD contains any no-mod objects or scripts it will appear to be a no-mod object it self when worn if you check it using the edit window. Therefore it will not allow you to add anything to it while worn. Remove the HUD and rezz it in world then you can add objects to it with no problems.
  10. There are numerous boat hull shapes made using basic prims in SL. You can check out several simple ones here Blake Sea - Half Hitch (120, 132, 22). Contact me in SL and I can give you several free examples you can take apart and examine.
  11. Thank you both, Codewarrior and Madelaine, for such excellent explanations, I am going to have fun playing with this. A tip to anyone thinking of trying this. Set your objects to temporary before blowing them up, so they will delete themselves if they fly off to some far distant sims.
  12. I noticed this script in the Library http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/ExplodingObjects and had learned some years ago that sets of linked objects, if set to physical and unlinked will blow up in a fun way, scattering prims far and wide. Some objects blow up better then others, and I would like to understand why, to optimize this phenomena. But even afte reading the Havok wiki page I could not find an explanation as to why objects blow up like this. I would appreciate understanding this phenomena better. Can anyone here explain it?
  13. That is pretty cool! It works on the mainland too where I do not own all of the land, gives a prim count for every parcel.
  14. I am an architect in RL and enjoy building stuff in SL. I have been doing it for years in SL and can share the following observations with you. You are very unlikely to earn a living wage in SL. Very few people will pay you even minimum wage to build stuff in SL, and there is tons of competition from non-architects and third world countries where people work for almost nothing. There is no easy money to be made in SL these days. Unless you have a lot of money snd time to invest in creating a lot of really great stuff before you open a large store, your best bet for earning lindens in SL, is to start small and sell your stuff through the marketplace. Owning enough land where you can display your creations in SL can easily cost much more then any earnings you will have from sales. If and when you are making enough money selling stuff through the marketplace, then you might consider opening a store in SL where you can display your products. Start small and grow as your earnings are able to support the expansion of your business. Learn how to use Builders Buddy scripts (free) or similar building rezzers so you can create a store in SL that rezzes one or two buildings at a time, depending on what your customer wants to look at, so you don't have to afford all of the prims necessary to display all of your buildings at one time. Invest time studying how to build stuff at the Ivory Tower of Primatives, the Particle Laboratory, study basic scripting and texturing. Learn now to build objects with Sculpt and Mesh. Builders Brewery has some good classes. Spend a lot of time exploring and looking at what your competition is building so you know what is already out there in the marketplace. There is a group in SL of real architects that used to be pretty active, even had their own sim, not sure it is any more. http://world.secondlife.com/group/75e40df1-c2c8-37a5-992c-0cec8aae5197?lang=en-US They have a blog http://archsl.wordpress.com/ P.S. this forum is for asking questions about inworld employment. Go to the proper forum to ask questions about how to build stuff or use the marketplace, etc. etc.
  15. There used to be a forum where you could share new things you created. Does that not exist anymore? I can't seem to find it when looking through the varioius forum titles here.
  16. There is a preferences setting in Firestorm that deflects the beam to your avatar. It is useful when you want to edit small objects and don't want the beam obscuring the view of them.
  17. Firestorm has really good support here http://www.firestormviewer.org/support/ and live support in SL. Much better then anything LL has ever offered.
  18. The BB Blender classes are offered only occasionally in a series of 8 or so classes, on different days each week from what I can tell. Somehow I keep missing the beginning of the series. Check the calendar. http://www.buildersbrewery.com/calendar/index.php You will probably not be able to take them all during a vacation.
  19. http://www.buildersbrewery.com/ also offers free classes in SL
  20. Thanks everyone. I don't need a high degree of precision for my purposes. I appreciate the suggestions on how to do this.
  21. llResetOtherScript or llGetScriptState http://lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=llResetOtherScript http://lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=llGetScriptState
  22. I know how to use llSetTimerEvent(float sec) to trigger an event by counting down to it. But is there a way to start that countdown on a specific date, such as the first day of each month? What I really want to do is send out a message and/or notecard on the first day of each month.
  23. In regard to my previous question here: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/SL-on-4G-data-network/qaq-p/1563783 about the feasibility of using a 4G USB data stick network connection for Second Life. I just wanted to provide this update: Wow!!! I'm impressed with 4G speeds. I finally settled on Virgin Mobile as having the best deal in my city, with great coverage here and unlimited 4G usage, so I bought one. Using Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test I tested my home wireless connection as well as the Virgin Mobile connection speeds and these are the results. Home wireless via AT&T Download 2.86 Mb/s Upload 0.86-0.95 Mb/s Ping 33-36 ms Virgin Mobil 3G: Download 1.16 Mb/s, Upload, 0.31 Mb/s Ping, 281 ms Virgin Mobil 4G: Download 10.02 Mb/s, Upload, 1.28 Mb/s Ping, 270 ms I had never imagined that the 4G data speeds would be better then my home wireless connection. Downloading it is 3.5 times faster!!! Amazing. I could give up my AT&T Wireless service at home and have a faster connection for less money. I went with Virgin Mobile because I got a better deal than AT&T or Sprint offered and they use the Sprint network which has great coverage in Austin. No data plan is required, its prepaid. I costs me only $35/month for 2 GB of 3G service and Unlimited 4G service, with no contract and no commitment, I can change the plan anytime I want. Buy what I need any particular month or nothing if I am not using it. I never expected 4G to be so impressive. It runs Second Life better then my AT&T wireless home network. And to ask, has anyone actually had problems using 4G to connect to SL. From my perspective it is a huge improvement over wifi which I have been using.
