233791 does, and was reproduced by Maestro when he copied one of the offending objects from my inventory. They all seem to be somewhat related, though.

There's a handful in the JIRAs already. But literally I can write a script that's as simple as llPlaySound on touch_start and nothing else at all, and it'll just loop infinitely. The only apparent fix is to copybot the mesh and re-upload it myself. New prims won't have the bug. I'm trying to look for alternatives to that, since I suspect people won't be happy if I do it. I want to make it a last resort, you know?
-
Oh, that's an idea. At least then the loop will be silent.

It's not. Does nothing. Not using queuing. The bug from 2022 that makes sounds play again any time there's a script or viewer event. There's gotta be a workaround for LL to not have fixed it for two years. https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-233079 https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-233791 https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-233643

Anyone got a workaround for the llPlaySound bug that makes it loop infinitely?

In my experience, every consultation with residents ends with Linden Lab saying "Oh man, that sounds like it'd take a little work. We're not doing that."
-
Not a terrible idea. Standardization is a good thing. It's always better for the consumers, anyway.
-
From what I understand, the PBR change is a tack on fix, whereas the chat system needs to be replaced entirely to even start fixing it. It's certainly the easier of the two. Since we know LL is adverse to hard work, it makes sense. I'm happy to see them doing anything modern on the platform. On top of that, I think someone already mentioned "end of year bonus" for some exec who wants SL to look prettier for mobile advertising.
-
See, I think that's what's getting overlooked. Those two goals aren't generally separate goals. Many of the things in SL that are broken would be fixed, or at least improved, by adopting gaming industry standards.

How Far Into Realism Do WE Truly Want To GO?
Paul Hexem replied to Bagnu's topic in General Discussion Forum
Ideally we want to stop short of the uncanny valley. -
That sort of dances around the point I was making. If we say "Like [insert MMO game here], SL can benefit from [insert technology here]", certain residents will argue against it because, as previously quoted, they want nothing to do with a game. Not because the technology is bad, if they even understand it at all, but because a game did it and SL isn't a game.
-
Because it's the same technology and requires much of the same practices? Did you not read anything I've been writing?
-
That's another problem with the "It's not a game!" mentality, yeah. LL's gotta put the hardware requirements up front just like games do, and keep the info updated. The current hardware requirements on their page are a giant lie by omission.
-
This is really what we should be concerned about, if anything.

I mean, any time any change is suggested, either for fundamental parts of the viewer or grid, or new features, these same arguments come up. Doesn't matter what the change is, it's always the same argument. That it's going to drive everyone off the grid because it lags all the computers and SL isn't a game so we shouldn't copy anything games do. Every time. I'm not the only person that notices it, clearly. I've said before and I'll say it again- it's not hard to get your hands on modern hardware that can keep up, even on a budget. It might mean waiting for sales, buying a generation behind, begging or borrowing, or installing a part yourself, but it is possible. Especially today when we have so many resources, youtube, online sales, and more, that we can take advantage of. "How to replace GPU" is a 10 minute video and you'd be able to confidently do it on any computer. SL is a game, as far as our PC hardware is concerned. We have to approach it the same way and buy the appropriate hardware. Every hobby has recurring costs, be it parts, supplies, whatever. If your hobby is SL, the cost is upgrading PC hardware somewhat regularly. Gotta do it or get left behind. The proverbial boat won't wait for you if you're late.

Correct. We should be on a much more modern rendering tech. DX10, DX11, Vulkan... We know the possibilities are there thanks to guys like @animats. Except every time that's floated, this same kind of argument comes up. It's hard to give the benefit of the doubt when every time anything's suggested to forward the technology of SL, these same arguments come up almost word for word. Like, for example... Bolded for emphasis. Stable servers, a modern rendering engine, reliable in-world communication, we want nothing like that in SL!
-
This isn't an isolated case. Every time anything is done, or suggested be done, to try to get SL up to even remotely modern standards there's a significant number of forum users that say it's stupid, it's a giant waste, it's going to cut off all the average users, gamers this and that, SL doesn't need change, SL shouldn't be updated, etc. People forget that PBR isn't some newfangled thing that the Lab cooked up, it's something that has origins as far back as 1997, but really developed in 2010. 23 years ago! So it's a little silly to see in this thread the mentions of users that are going to struggle because their hardware supposedly can't support PBR. If you're connecting to the Internet with a computer that can't support technology from almost a quarter century ago, you've got bigger things to worry about than if you can log into SL or not.

Well. Considering the current quality is customers like you and I, you may be on to something there.
