Do you honestly believe there's a public group whos existence could have an effect on a community, that no one has joined in the past four years... thereby, creating, at least, some activity? Parrish Ashbourne wrote: "SL land of the dead groups join one today" sounds great as a promotional slogan. This isen't an issue of I can't get the group name I want because it's taken, this is an issue making SL a better place as a whole. I have ideas of how to make SL a better place as well... thankfully, none of them involve denying anyone their freedom to be a member of a group of their choosing. Parrish Ashbourne wrote: There's nothing wrong with suggesting "reasonable" limits on a groups life span, but relying on people to leave groups on their own is not working, most people that stop using SL don't take time to leave groups. It's quite simple.. the owner of the group gets to decide what's done with the group... after all, they paid for it. If they should leave SL, it remains their members' choice to remove themselves from the group, thereby making it subject to deletion. I strongly feel that, as long as this is not the case, such groups should be left intact. By your own admission, the difficulty in doing so is pretty insignificant (as in, a slightly more difficult group search). I simply don't believe that the intrusion on individual rights trumps the betterment of the community, in this particular instant. ...Dres
  2. Pussycat Catnap wrote: I'm going to disagree. I feel groups SHOULD move ownership if the current owner has been absent for 3-months. Pretty standard in MMOs. I don't play any other MMOs, so I'll take your word for it. But I remain skeptical as to whether groups in other MMOs hold the same significance as do the ones in SL. For instance, are people in other MMOs required to pay a fee in order to create a group? Pussycat Catnap wrote: If a tier donor has not logged in in 3 months, they and their donation should be removed. The usual process for when a group has more land than it has tier for could then result. What incentive would LL have for removing them when their contributions are being paid, regardless of how often they sign on? Do you honestly think it'd be in LL's best interest to remove someone, thereby forcing the confiscation of group land, only to lose the revenue from each and every member which has contributed? Pussycat Catnap wrote: If there are no tier donors - the group should move to the highest ranked member to have most recently logged in during the past 3 months. (so if all members are the same rank, the next person to log in, gets the group). - This sort of process is common in MMOs with 'guilds'. I have no idea why any member of any group or "guild" would accept such an arbitrary dictation of who their owner (hence, leader) will be, from what amounts as their service provider. If this is indeed the case, I'm quite sure the members of that group would be scrambling to create a new one, wherein they can decide who takes that roll. Pussycat Catnap wrote: If 3 months is too short, 6 months. But any longer is basically allowing no-longer present people to dictate to the current userbase. Are you kidding me? How could the mere existence of a group be seen as dictating anything? I honestly doubt that you're so insane that you actually think this sort of thing is possible. Pussycat Catnap wrote: For the same reasons I feel any user who has not logged in for over 1 year should have their land holdings auctioned off - any promise alpha / beta testers had for land it still true - they still have their tier. The value of the auction could be given to them, and the first 512m could be assigned to a linden home if there is some legal conflict... Again, as long as people are actually paying their tier, LL isn't going to removed them just because they've failed to log in. Doing so would be financially incompetent. I have the distinct feeling, Pussycat, that, should LL ever acquiesce to your way of running things, they'd be bankrupt within a year. ...Dres

  5. Parrish Ashbourne wrote: I found that there are some groups where the owner has left SL and none of the member can edit, manage, chat or post notices to the group, there's no reason to keep a group like that around. There's no reason to get rid of a group like that either. Parrish Ashbourne also wrote: Subject groups especially if it's for a community in SL like steampunk for example, for these types of groups dead groups have an impact because they make it harder to find an active group in search. New people in SL looking for a steampunk might join one or more of the many dead groups that still have lot of members, most of whom are all so inactive, but still show up on top of search. people join these groups and then get the idea that there's not much going on with steampunk in SL. So what... inactive groups are no less legitimate than are active ones. Parrish Ashbourne wrote: I don't see why it would be inappropriate for LL to disband a group if it been inactive for say over a year or more, try buying an island and not pay tier and see what happens. There is no monthly charge for simply having a group, therefore your analogy doesn't apply. Then, there's the question of what exactly it would take to consider a group inactive. If the only activity taking place in a group is the joining and leaving of members, I would still consider that activity. It's really up to individuals to decide whether they consider a group worthy of their membership or not. It's not up to you, the OP or even LL to decide whether or not a group has any worth. So, yeah, I think it would be very inappropriate for LL to tell people, "We know you want to be a member of this group, but screw you... we're gonna delete it anyway." Which is exactly what they'd be doing to every member of those types of groups. Honestly, I simply can't understand why some people insist on trying to dictate what other people should and shouldn't do with their second lives, simply because their actions might make something ever-so-slightly inconvenient. If people want to belong to a supposedly inactive group for years on end, they should be free to do so. Is this really so difficult to understand? ...Dres

  7. I understand what you're saying, but I don't understand why what someone decides to do with their group is any of your concern... including letting it languish. Someone has to pay to start a group, therefore, it would be highly inappropriate for LL to disband that group based on anything but the wishes of the person who did or the person to whom they've abdicated ownership. People use groups in a variety of ways... one such way is simply that of advertizing an interest in a particular subject... such as a fetish. Such groups may seem entirely dead, but this doesn't mean that they don't still perfectly fill the roles for which they were created. This doesn't mean that you can't start a similar group which could very well surpass membership eventually. Those who find the subject matter to be compelling enough will likely join more than one group which caters to it. Therefore, there's little reason to be concerned about the existence of another, seemingly inactive group on the same subject. ...Dres

  11. Xzarina Demina wrote: One can also say that with the small amount you pay for the goods in SL, then it is unfair to require to see it rezzed and I believe that it is a service that many can not meet economically. One can certainly say that, but one might think the one who did, was doing themselves a disservice. I can assure you that I would never ever buy a house, for example, without being able to walk through it and evaluate the quality of its build. If you're selling houses, you have to expect that people will feel this way and facilitate the ability for them to do this. No one is forced to do so, of course... but in no way is it unfair for a customer to pass something over if they can't see it for themselves. Xzarina Demina wrote: You should see it as an online store. There are many internet stores that only have a warehouse and no business-room, yet people buy at these places, just based on some pictures. There's a huge difference. In RL, there are ways to recoup your money if there's some sort of dispute... in SL, there simply isn't. ...Dres

  15. Innula Zenovka wrote: Are people required to obtain gaming licences from Louisiana or Tennesee before offering online gaming to residents of those states? That might be it. I don't know. When this policy was first announced, I was slightly curious as to why Louisiana was prohibited, so I Googled it. Therefore, I don't really remember the specifics of what I read back then and, when I Googled Tennessee online gaming laws today, the very little I read about them seemed similar to what I do remember about Louisiana. I honestly don't know how all that works. It could be that LL decided to just include any state that has any restriction on it whatsoever. ...Dres

I have rediscovered how much fun On Line Poker is. and uhhhh Is that LEGAL in Tennessee? :matte-motes-agape: Why YES it IS > THANK YOU LINDEN LABS . It seems as though Tennessee online gambling laws are much like those of the state where I live... Louisiana. While it's perfectly legal for people in both states to play poker online, it's not at all legal to operate a business which offers online poker in either state. I can only imagine this was the reason LL included them on the list of prohibited states. As to why they chose that route, your guess is as good as mine. ...Dres

Gavin Hird wrote: MB Robonaught wrote: Has anyone considered that the reason Linden Labs won't be allowing inventory transfers is from incompatible technologies between the current SL and the upcoming SL2 and not some grand conspiracy to destroy inventories? Yes, and I am perferctly happy with that. What I find close to dishonest is when they call it a new version, when in fact it is an etirely new product where the only thing you can move is your account and LL holding. A new version implies backward compatibility (as is customary for all new versions of software) or at a minimum conversion routines for old data/content. Where'd you get this idea?
