  1. What beautiful looking places! And your pics are gorgeous.
  2. Total guess here -- I've only been there once. Central Park?
  3. Well, more in keeping with the spirit of the thread, I can tell you that I have been binging recently on Joanna Lumley's various travelogues for ITV and the BBC -- most recently (i.e., last night) her "In the Land of the Northern Lights." She's just wonderful, and I like the way her narratives focus as much on the trivial as upon the monumental.
  4. The forums? 😊 I did, in fact, watch a fair amount of the inauguration, and most especially the speeches -- which, I was relieved to see, mostly hit the right notes, including those delivered by Republicans. The whole exercise has left me feeling a teeny bit better about the future.
  5. For better or worse -- and I think mostly worse -- the mantra of commerce in SL is, and always has been, "caveat emptor." That is, in some small part, a reflection of the free market libertarian ethos that underpinned the way this place was set up, but it's probably primarily a reflection of the reality that LL simply doesn't have the resources to police this kind of thing. That would eat up an enormous amount of time and money that we all, in the end, would pay for. (That's also the reason, perhaps, that no one has ever set up a web site such as I described. It would be inundated with complaint, both valid and petty. And it would be expensive and very time consuming to run.)
  6. As it happens, yes, quite possibly. And I'm not going to be around in a hundred years. This is history -- a term which is not limited to only "earthshaking events" -- that is going to matter a great deal to me now, as well as to a few billion other people on this planet.
  7. I have said before here that the existence of a reputable and transparent web resource to manage instances of in-world fraud, poor business practices, false advertising, and so forth, would be a great thing. But such a resource would need to be, as I say, transparent. It would need to establish its credibility by actually investigating such things, and also by giving creators / landlords / service providers an opportunity to respond to complaints. Without that kind of system of checks, such a site would be nothing more than another version of Virtual Secrets, with no way of knowing whether a complaint was justified, or merely someone with a grudge. Posting such things here on the forum would have exactly this effect: it would, at best, be a case of he said/she said.
  8. Yeah, it is. Very. I was pleased that the dance HUD didn't feature that glitch, as it, in particular, could be used in some pretty nasty ways. Good question. I discussed this last night with my friend, although we didn't try it. Blocking someone doesn't prevent them from seeing you, so I don't know that it would work. I might experiment again with this tonight.
  9. Window shopping for TVs. I took this (as I have a number of others) at the "1950s and 1960s NYC" sim at the Time Portal. (They also have 30s-40s NYC, London in the Blitz, and 1920s Berlin). It's really worth a visit to any of these! http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/TIME PORTAL/149/117/1930
  10. So, I experimented on this with my friend last night. My dance HUD seems to be less problematic than I'd thought -- he can revoke permissions himself using /stop99 With the facial expression HUD, on the other hand, he cannot. The perms he first granted me months ago remain in effect. I wasn't even able to revoke them myself, using 'Clear Target." So, basically, I seem to have perms from him using that HUD in perpetuity, so far as I can see, and even I can't do anything to remove that.
  11. As I said in the thread itself, I disagreed, mostly, with what you were advocating, but I agree it was well-thought out, and clearly expressed. I am still not sure why it, in particular, was removed -- maybe, as you are implying, LL doesn't like getting its hand slapped, or is embarrassed by the issue (because, let's face it, there are many highly contentious and objectionable groups in SL, including quite openly fascistic and supremacist ones). But I'm sorry for it, because the clarity of your OP encouraged, I thought, reasonably calm and rational responses. And, it's also just nice to see you back here again.
  12. I've actually seen them do so. Perhaps a year ago or so, at least one, or maybe two, of my posts were modified with [redactions] added, rather than simply removed. It was done transparently -- it wasn't a sneaky "stealth" revision -- and I was actually grateful, because it meant that the post itself, or the substantive and important portions of it, remained. It must, however, be time-consuming. It's no wonder that we don't see it happen often. And, unless it is done transparently, it's potentially problematic, of course.
  13. That's a good thought, re. the censorship thing . . . although, if true, it is rather ironic that "bad behaviour" is being rewarded. I'm sorry that Pam's thread is gone. I disagreed with her OP, but it was, in some regards, the least "nasty" and most interesting of the three.
  14. Obviously, you should handle it in whatever way is most comfortable for you. But this person sounds like a piece of work.
  15. Yeah, this is what I meant by rife for abuse. DO AR her. That's just unconscionable. Make sure you get a screenshot, and explain carefully what has happened so that it's clear that you did NOT grant permissions for that particular animation. I'm so very sorry. That's just ugly and awful.
  16. Is she actually making you do things you don't want to do? I mean, consent is important, regardless, but is she mostly playing around with you, or is this actually abusive behavior?
  17. I may experiment with this a bit tonight, with the help of my friend. Fortunately, he likes smiling and dancing with me, so he shouldn't find it much hardship. Unless, of course, I choose . . . a tango!!!! Bwahahahahah!!!
  18. There are worse fates awaiting some in the metaverse . . . At least I'm careful to only choose good dances.
  19. I'll have to check. There are definitely no buttons on the HUD for that, but /99stop might work. Not being on the same parcel doesn't -- I've reused both HUDs several times on the same person days apart, and no permissions were required.
  20. Which I don't think I can do, because these are no-mod. You know, the posing one isn't a big deal, because I can only use it to change his facial expression. The dance one, on the other hand, is a couples dance HUD -- and can be used for ANY couples animations, not just dancing. That's just rife for abuse.
  21. I wonder if it's being observed in-world at all? I haven't seen anything. If not, too bad. SL used to be better about observing this kind of day.
  22. Yeah, I get that. There were some pretty intemperate posts, and posters. I wouldn't have ARed them (I only AR really blatant spam posts), but in fairness, two of threads are still there, so the posts themselves haven't poofed. I'm not sure why that one in particular was nuked, when one of the others is a far more obvious troll, but there ya are . . . Ours is not to reason why . . .
  23. Is there a way that *I* can release him? Other than choosing another victim (which seems to reset the perms)?
  24. Huh. Well, I guess my friend is just going to be my smiling, dancing puppet forever . . . or until the JIRA is addressed. 2009, eh? This could be fun.
  25. Yeah, this. I have a pose HUD which I have used on a friend for pics, as well as another dance one . . . and neither bothers to ask my friend for his consent anymore. Basically, I can pose his face, and make him dance, anytime I want . . . Which, you know, is kinda fun . . . But why is this a thing? It's a bit of a security issue, surely?
