When the new profiles came out I set my feed to 'nobody' but was surprised to see that I was still getting the banter between several of my more chatty friends. I asked if there was a way to turn this off and was told there wasn't (short of deleting all my friends). I don't use v2 and when I log in from a browser it's set to the profile section, so I don't see the feed convos unless I specifically look for them, still it seems to me that there should be a way to completely turn all this stuff off.
  2. Don't waste your time Marianne. This guy is on some kind of crusade against Phoenix, which is clear from the previous ridiculous thread that he started about child avatars, height detection and a strong dose of misinformation about who's running the Phoenix project these days. He's convinced that Phoenix/Firestorm is evil and part of some kind of conspiracy to destroy the grid. He's convinced that the LL viewer is authoritative in all areas (and forgets that all TPVs are based on LL code). He's created a strawman and even though you, Immy and others have knocked it down repeatedly, he insists on propping it up with these silly arguments yet again. My advice (which I'm now going to take myself) is to ignore any thread created by this joker. Welcome to my ignore list Wasted, err, I mean Lonewolf.
  3. Speaking not as a merchant but as a longtime resident (and as someone who came inworld when you needed a credit card and had to pay to play) I can see both sides of the argument. Free or very low priced items can be a huge help for the new resident who may be trying to decide whether SL is for them or not. At the same time people need to spend money in order to compensate creators for their efforts and keep the virtual economy moving. I see no reason why they two can't peacefully co-exist as they're both necessary to the growth of the world. Having said that, it annoys the hell out of me that when I try using marketplace search I'm bombarded by free or very low priced items. When I use marketplace it's because I've not been able to locate something I want to spend L$ on inworld or need it quickly or need to gift something. I don't need to waste time wading through page after page of free stuff. I haven't depended on free stuff since I was 3 (SL) days old. There's got to be a better balance than the current method (or lack thereof).
  4. Firestorm runs just fine on my MacBook Pro but, I'm still using Snow Leopard. The problem as pointed out above is the fact that none of the v2 viewers (including the official LL version) are fully compatible with Lion. There's a sticky from Esbee Linden at the top of the SL Viewers forum page that mentions this.
  5. Canoro Philipp wrote: we dont need Google+ and Facebook anyway for social network, we already have our own. Agreed 100%. It's funny how so many average residents who questioned the Lab's push to promote a tie-in with FB understood this but, the powers that be didn't. On a practical level, not even touching on the major issues Ishtara raised, it was a dumb move to throw their lot in with an outside entity they had no control over and no relationship with. The whole episode showed just how little some of the execs at LL really understood their own product, or what their customers wanted.
  6. I don't think Google's any worse than any other big online outfit when it comes to privacy (and probably way better than Facebook) but, their "real names" policy has already generated a lot of controversy and turned a lot of folks off. I know I won't go anywhere near it.
  7. There's a very recent thread in General Discussions about a marketplace gift being sent to the wrong person due to this. Very good article and quite informative. Thanks for the link Mickey.
  8. Canoro Philipp wrote: the UI of V2 is just fine, i can do everything with it, i walk, i teleport, i chat in IM, i create prims and texture them, listen to music, open my inventory... all the functions are there. the only problem is the user, who is not used to. we will be in viewer 5 and some users will still use V1, its ok, if some people still want to use windows 3.1, is their choice. Swell. Great for you. Oh btw, a well-designed and thought out UI shouldn't completely break from what came before and force the user with years of experience and muscle memory to radically change their workflow and lose productivity in order to adapt to it. It should be the other way around. The UI should be flexible enough to accomodate many use cases. Jeez, even the Snowstorm project lead at the time admitted that LL made major mistakes in the development of v2. Maybe you should watch the vid from SLCC 10 where Esbee and Q Linden both said this. Why do you bother responding to every one of these threads anyway? If you don't care about us who despise v2 move along and enjoy the paradise that is your SL. Those of us who have legitimate and quantifiable issues with v2 or any other boneheaded LL decision will keep speaking out.
  9. What Ansariel said! :matte-motes-grin: Turns out that intentional impersonation wasn't the big deal we thought it would be. Instead we have annoying stuff like this, or my pet peeve, trying to make out a string of funky unicode characters and deciding what to call the avatar underneath it.
  10. This doesn't have anything to do with you being banned or in trouble for violating TOS. Sounds like an asset server or a lag issue. These things happen sometimes. It'll probably be resolved shortly. In the meantime just relax and try rezzing/working with the items later.
  11. Tristizia Demonista wrote: As was mentioned MANY times, the UI is a matter of personal taste (and perhaps what you do in SL). You might not like it, but there are ppl who do (me for example). I think you doth protest too much. No one is taking your beloved v2 away from you. (Notwithstanding the fact that most people don't use it) LL has watsed over 2 million dollars on the development of that mess and are in way too deep to ever think of changing course. They'll continue to flog it until at some point it will have most of the usability of the 1.x viewers that haven't been actively touched for 2 years. As far as v3 goes, this is just a naming scheme. It's still v2; same kludgy UI, same bugs, same everything. Just a "new" name. How they truly consider v3 a major version upgrade from 2.8x I don't know but, LL seems to only follow standards and conventions when it suits them and ignores them when it doesn't.
  12. All you need to do is to right click on your land and choose 'Abandon Land'. You'll then have to go to the Linden Home website and pick a new home.
  13. We know that Rodvik reads these forums and sometimes responds (as he did to another resident's billing complaint a few days ago) so, how about a reply on this very important issue that affects such a large and active portion of the SL community? Rodvik please let us know what's being done about the sim crossing, lag and public access issues highlighted in this thread.
  14. This kind of crap is the reason I haven't lived on mainland since I was a newbie. If it's any consolation though, these amateur club owners usually run out of money/patience very quickly. I hope you don't have to endure this eyesore for long. Good luck!
  15. This is one of the major bugs in LL v2.8. Seems they're in such a rush to get mesh rolled out that they're breaking all kinds of things in each new release of their viewer. According to this bug report the Lindens are working on a fix and it should be available soon. In the meantime your best bet is to use a non-LL viewer like Firestorm.
  16. I used to do a LOT of sailing and flying in and around Nautilus, the Blake Sea, the New England sims and the Hollywood Airport area. It wasn't bad so long as you didn't make the mistake of crossing the boundaries where 4 sims met. But it seems around a year and a half ago the sim crossings went from OK to iffy and then to brutal. Rubber-banding, flying off world or ending up underground became the norm rather than the occasional annoyance. I pretty much just stored my planes and boats because they weren't usable between the dangerous sim crossings and the lag. After LL announced (I think it was this past winter) that they'd made a lot of changes to the way sim crossing was handled I pulled out a couple of boats and planes (that had been updated with new lower lag scripts) and tried navigating the Blake sims again. It was better but, still not what I'd call a good experience. I didn't end up flying off world anymore but, the lag was still bad and I was still seeing quite a few bad crossings that lead to viewer crashes. The Lab has made a bit of progress but, still has a long way to go before flying and boating will be enjoyable again. Maybe someday they'll focus more on these core experience issues. To my way of thinking it's these kinds of things that send new users running away from SL moreso than a dearth of avatar name choices, or complex new types of prims. Yes the technology needs to advance and there need to be genuine innovations but, before all that there must be a solid foundation on which to build. Right now the base technology doesn't scale well and is anything but solid.
  17. Based on the small bit of info you posted I'm going to assume that the skin (or outfit) you're wearing has "pasties" applied over certain intimate areas. If so, simply change to a different skin (or outfit) and the "bandage thingies" should go away.
  18. York Jessop wrote: It's the reason I returned to Second Life, I know there is resistance to it, more in the case of how complex it is to understand but I think once we start seeing what can be done with it we will all enjoy the benefits of highly detailed models with less prim counts and more importantly .. less lag. Its like asking the question, are you bothered about scuplties compared to prims, the difference is meshes compared to scuplties is a similiar comparison. There are alot of restrictions with prims, they are expensive to build (in terms of prim count) and horribly in-efficient on lag, they show 'seams' everywhere and its like building houses with lego. Scuplties are abit easier in that you can have a cushion that looks like a cushion, they only cost 1 prim in most cases but are laggier than prims, and are not practical for larger objects. Meshes are almost complete freedom to build, you can have complex shapes included in your build, they perform very well and with a prim for prim comparison, they cost alot less for alot more. They also are textured inside the 3D programs that are used, and can be baked with shadows and realistic shading before they are even uploaded into second life. The downside to meshes is that you need a version 2 viewer (um thats it) You should start seeing some difference in the marketplace in terms of quality and prim costs once the roll out is complete You forgot the other major downside; they must be created using external software and in many cases (such as Maya, 3D Studio Max) those external programs are expensive, professional grade, and very complex tools far beyond the reach of the average resident. I keep hearing mesh advocates say that there are free alternatives like Blender (which has a UI that makes v2's look like the paragon of good design) and Google SketchUp (less complex but, apparently has issues exporting to the Collada format that SL understands) but they have issues of their own. Bottom line is that this stuff isn't for the more casual builder. That means that the vast majority of things created in world will continue to be made using prims and sculpties, and there goes all the supposed efficiency out the window. Also with all the restrictions being placed on mesh it appears that it won't be used for large builds, the very things that could benefit from the supposed efficiency of mesh. Personally I'm just going to ignore all the mesh hype and stick with Snowglobe. If there comes a point (maybe around a year from now) when mesh is being widely adopted, when more people beyond than the 3-D design pros are developing using it and when more of the major bugs get worked out of v2 then I'll begin to care.
  19. It's not dead (yet) but it does seem to be ill from numerous causes, most of them sadly self-inflicted by poor management decisions over the years.
  20. I'll continue using the 1.x series viewer I'm most comfortable with and will ignore the stuff that I don't care about/can't see until it gets to the point that it seriously affects my enjoyment of the world. At that point I'll either move to something v2-based or I'll find something else to do that doesn't include SL. Pretty simple. I really dislike v2 and the direction LL has been moving with pandering to the ADD FaceTwitPlus generation but, meh. I can mostly ignore it. There are still enough of us dinosaurs in the world that I don't feel alone. :smileytongue: I disabled all the feed writing and notification crap but, the thing that irks me is that I'm still seeing the stuff that a few of my chattier friends are apparently writing. Is this intended behavior? If so, maybe I'll just start a pruning of my friends list... :matte-motes-evil: Edited to answer the OP: Neither The same (Yay for Snowglobe) as none of the new shinies show up 7 months old, custom built gaming rig
  21. So is there a definitive/authoritative statement on invisiprims? I know about the current glitch with their rendering in v2.8 but that doesn't affect me as I'm using Snowglobe and/or Firestorm. What concerns me are the posts where people have stated that invisiprims are no longer to be supported and inferring that the glitch in v2.8 won't be fixed. What's the truth of this matter? As someone who's worn furry avatars my entire time in SL and who owns dozens of avs that rely on invisiprims this could be a big deal and could determine whether I remain in SL or not. I will not go through my inventory modding all those avs.
  22. Are they still having the regularly scheduled office hour/user group meetings?
  23. Void: I didn't know that it was bugged on the TPVs, I just knew that it had been backported. I never actually tried it because of some potential security issues that I didn't want to deal with. Ok, so scratch one (overhyped and underused) feature that didn't make the backporting to the TPVs. As for the alphas I have no idea about LL 1.23 because I don't use it. They show up for me just fine on Snowglobe. I can't use them but the viewer does render them correctly.
  24. Feature requests are also submitted via the JIRA system. Good luck with that as I find the JIRA to be very unintuitive and downright user-hostile for non-programmer types.
