  1. LL has explained that a revamp of the default av would be a huge undertaking as Dana explained. I have no reason to doubt that but, it seems to me, that as the avatar is the foundation for our presence in the world, our electronic representation, that making it look first rate would be a top priority. In my opinion making the default av, the essential part of the SL experience, look as good as possible should be a top priority for the Lab. All the new "features" that LL's been giving us over the past couple of years are nice but, they're dessert. Time to focus a lot more on the main course.
  2. Jacki Silverfall wrote: To this thread. What was meant as a joke, which yes I can see the irony I can also see the underlying implications to start another stolen mesh is entering the grid thread. Ha ha yes that was cute Ishtara. But indeed it did start the scare of this happening. Which as stated has been happening in Sl for some time it's just meshes turn. The attacks on some of the posts is in my opinion uncalled for and unnecessary. EVERYONE has the right to post their opinion here. It is no ones business to tell them how they should post or make fun of them in the process by taking words out of context. And ya know what? LL does count on us to do their policing, also their customer service. See the Answer thread. We help more people than their own staff. Most people in this post have it in for Mesh, Well to bad. It's here deal with it. It's the future learn or... Don't learn. As far as someone not having a store here or inworld means nothing! I mean what the blank does that have to do with the price of tea in China. It's just knit picking. Maybe, just maybe they will have a store. And frankly I've been to some of the stores that people have here. I can see why some would be apprehensive about mesh coming. I have a little store that makes things everyone can make. But it's for fun. And if your counting on your income to support your tiers or sims or whatever, forever. That's just not good business sense. Things change you have to change with it. Or at least a back up plan. Now tear me up! Most people in this thread have it in for mesh? What?? Even if this were the case it would be naive in the extreme to believe that after all the money and resources that the Lab has invested in mesh that anything said in these forums would have any bearing on anything but, having been in SL for 5 years now I've seen time and time again that legitimate resident concerns have been routinely brushed aside. From the creation of Zindra, to open sims, to the courting of businesses to the development of Viewer 2 the Lab has consistently ignored customer feedback and proceeded with whatever plan they're pursuing at the time, releasing it incomplete or poorly implemented, then surprised when many of the very issues pointed out to them beforehand appear. People seem to feel that residents who speak up are "Linden haters", or anti-progress Luddites afraid of change. This is incorrect. We speak out because we very much care about the future of SL. We want LL and their flagship creation to succeed. Believe me, I have far better things to do than have internet arguments with strangers over a damned game. It seems that anyone who voices any opinion or concern contrary to the lollipops, rainbows and ponies view are immediately viewed with suspicion or as "disloyal" in some way. That's the real shame here. This resident, while having a tough skin, has gotten to the point of being tired of being called names and beating his head against an immovable wall. Good luck to you all. (Grammar edit)
  3. I'm using it and it works very well. Henri Beauchamp, the developer of Cool VL, is a longtime SL resident who has contributed many patches to the official LL viewers over the years and also works with other third-party viewer developers on bug fixes and features. His Cool viewers have been around for a long time and I've never had any issues with them. There's another thread here where people discuss Cool VL as well.
  4. Nacy you're asking an awful lot of a normal resident. It's not Ishtara's job, nor yours or mine to act as IP police for SL. Actually unless we're the legal rights holder of said IP we have no standing to file a complaint, nor would the Lab be under any obligation to investigate such a complaint even if filed. Also, bad analogy to RL. A better one would be if you were walking down the street and saw a man selling "Rolleks" watches and "Louise Vuitton" bags from the trunk of his car.
  5. Tristizia Demonista wrote: So you are basically saying, that everyone who opens his/her profile inworld is in the "Inner Circle" ? Cause this URL is clearly displayed in my window every time i open my profile inworld! That's because you're using LL v2/3. Those of us who aren't never see that URL. I knew of it only from the original blog posting that announced the web profiles. Again, not everyone is so dedicated to be on the blogs and forums as some of us are. It's stupid that there's no link from either the main SL website or from the Dashboard to the profiles site. Here's hoping that one day LL will do a little consolidation of their internet properties.
  6. It's very much illegal. People warned that this would happen but, over and over we heard that it wouldn't be "practical" to bring content from games or from various 3-D download sites into SL. Yep. You bet. Never underestimate the ingenuity of gamers.
  7. Spewing hate? Oh I dunno, look at the gigantic font moronic diatribe above yours? Also, try reading my very first post in this thread. I think it was more than fair. Anyway I'm done with this insanity. You guys enjoy your kool-aid and your dying MMO.
  8. Holy hell what's with the people who take it so personally when anyone says v2 ain't all rainbows and ponies and lollipops? You think it's perfecto, swell. Use it and enjoy. Why is it so hard to accept that a major portion of the userbase (over half) prefers something else and isn't cowed into keeping quiet about it? No need to come into these threads spewing hate by telling residents to GTFO, build their own software and all that other nonsense. It would be one thing if someone was deliberately spreading patently false information and you wanted to "set the record straight" but, this is someone's opinion and as such just as valid as yours (especially when they can provide legitimate examples as to what they see as flaws in design). Did you guys forget that Philip, Esbee, Q and now Rodvik Linden all basically apologized for the lack of resident input during v2 development and the major flaws that occurred as a result? Or are they just "haters" too? You guys want tolerance and choice? How about practicing what you preach?
  9. Thanks Venus. Those are the street/area-named sims. The First Land program was awesome. I made a killing by selling mine to a land speculator for a stupidly inflated price toward the end of the first Great Land Bubble. Very soon afterwards the bubble burst leaving a lot of very unhappy (and very broke) ex-baby land barons stuck with huge swaths of mainland that they'd never be able to sell for anywhere near what they paid. Those were also the days of "grey goo" attacks; griefers would unleash mountains of self-replicating prims and particles that overloaded sims and spread to bordering regions also taking them down.
  10. Before you give up try taking a look at Henri Beauchamp's Cool VL Viewer. There's a thread about it posted here. Henri has managed to get the v2/3 rendering engine to work with a v1 client that keeps the familiar UI. I've tried it and it works very well. Maybe I should get to be a "helper" since I'm actually encouraging people to, you know, stay in SL and not leave angry and bad mouth the game some more...? Just thinking out loud here... :smileyhappy:
  11. That's why I said "some of the first" Storm since I couldn't remember whether the street-named or the color-named ones came first. The street-named ones are quite old, though.
  12. Rather than throw any more gas on a fire I'll just say that v2's UI was primarily created by an outside firm comprised of people who had never used SL or only used it very casually as a prerequisite for the project. The numerous questionable and downright annoying decisions they made, in an apparent effort to make the viewer look and behave more like a web browser friendly to new users, make sense when viewed in that context. I'm certainly the last person to defend any of those decisions (and my numerous posts on v2's deficiencies will attest to that) but just trying to give a little historical perspective as to why it is what it is. And yes, it does need to be revisited. Badly. ETA- Nice attitude from a community "helper" btw. Just because you're jaded and tired of the "wars" doesn't mean this poster's opinion is invalid or that she's not entitled to voice it. No wonder people have such a low opinion of SL across the web and why so many people have left these forums in droves.
  13. Some of the very first sims (like DaBoom) were named for various streets near Linden HQ in San Francisco. Other early sims were named to honor major company investors (like Omidyar-- named after Pierre Omidyar, co-founder of eBay).
  14. Thanks for the heads up Marianne. I'm pretty "meh" about it, honestly. I guess it's a nice start but most of us who are already premium have land where we can build anyway. Maybe it's an incentive to those hardcore builders who are stuck working in public sandboxes but, I'd think those people would be few and far between. The people that SL is attracting now seem to be more the socializers. Maybe the free gifts will appeal to them but, I don't see the "members only" sandboxes as a big draw for these folks.
  15. Since it seems that there will be a new spambot carpet bombing of the forums every day it would be nice if we could get a warning posted somewhere prominent explaining that the advertised sites are scams. We know that these sites are dangerous and more experienced residents will stay away but, it would be nice to get the word out to the newer residents.
  16. Peewee Musytari wrote Yus, of course the viewer is perfect, it is us that is faulty lol At least thats the message that comes across sometimes. When you consider how many people are in SL and how many different uses we all have for a viewer, it is ridiculous to assume that you could make one that will suit everyone. I have no problem with the fact that some people will love V2 or that some will never love it. I do find it a bit patronising when I hear people say that the only reason some people don`t like it is because they haven`t given it a chance, like they are too stupid to know what they do or don`t like, because its just not that simple. People have different tastes & thats the bottomline, you might be able to force them to use a viewer but you can`t force them to like it. While there are still choices to be had, why force anyone to do anything? At the end of the day everyone deserves to be as happy as possible with their SL user experience & one of the things that the Phoenix team got right with Firestorm is the options. Yes it is V2 but there are options for just about everything in the viewer so users can personalise it & that has made it possible for a lot more people to "happily" switch over to V2 on a sort of hybrid between the 2. But there are still going be others that find that is still not V1 enough for them & that does not mean there is something wrong with them. We are all enitled to fight for a viewer we want to use. Thank you Peewee for the best response.
  17. The SL client isn't multi-threaded so it won't fully take advantage of multicore processors. It doesn't take advantage of multiple video cards so SLI is not a factor either (even though some people anecdotally claim otherwise). It uses OpenGL so DX11 makes no difference either. Basically SL is very dependent on the power of your video card moreso than your processor so, pretty much any modern chip architecture and 2-4 GB of RAM will be fine. Just make sure to get the best vid card you can afford, especially if you want to enable shadows and all the other shiny stuff.
  18. When I use Firestorm I don't see timestamps in chat but, I have all the chat options set to mimic Viewer 1 behavior. You'll want to go into the various preferences and play around with the settings choosing the Viewer 1 style defaults for chat. This will also let you get rid of some of the v2 display oddities like the microscopic icons next to people's names and every message in local appearing as a separate window.
  19. I'm no v2 user but, I know that v2 has edit controls. Sounds like you're in basic mode. Check the preferences and look for a button you can check labeled Advanced Mode and relog. That should get your edit controls back. Oh wait, this only affects jewelry editing? That's bizarre... no clue. I've never seen anything like that! Edited because I was too fast on the trigger. Reading, not skimming, FTW!
  20. For those not familiar with him the developer of the Cool Viewer, Henri Beauchamp, is a longtime SL resident and open source advocate who has been contributing patches and bug fixes to the official Linden viewers as well as to the third party viewer community. The reason he's chosen not to list his work on the official TPV site has to do with certain open source licensing issues, not because Cool Viewer is attempting to "hide" anything. Of course everyone must make the determination whether they want to trust a non-LL developer on their own based on their own information. I'm not speaking for Henri nor making any representation that his work is "safe". I'm highlighting his longtime association with the SL developer community. I, however, will be downloading and testing the mesh Cool Viewer!
  21. harley Wachmann wrote: I did a windows repair and updated my graphic drivers, Im now able to get in world. Hey Harley! Glad you got things sorted out. I hope you're going to play hockey again this season. :matte-motes-big-grin:
  22. Tristizia Demonista wrote: Funny that you mention snarky remarks! Why is it, that these are apparently perfectly acceptable when they are Pro V1 (or TPV) but not if somebody dares to say something positive about V2 ? It seems to be an unwritten rule somewhere here, that it is only acceptable if somebody bashes everything that has to do with V2. Everything positive is either ignored by die-hard v1 lovers or gets some snarky remarks. Also, my remark was about the Pie-Menu, nothing else! I don't recall anyone (certainly not me) attacking you for using v2, nor did I make any snarky comments, unlike another poster who earlier referred to 1.x users as "old folks" who dislike change. You stated something rather flippantly regarding the pie menu and I responded with my remarks about industry standards. It was hardly personal. You're of course welcome to give your reasons why you think v2 rocks. But that isn't going to influence the Lab to make changes. By people voicing their issues with v2 (hopefully in a calm and rational manner so as to be taken seriously) and hopefully someone in authority taking note, then those issues can get fixed. If it wasn't for users expressing their unhappiness we'd still have the original 2.0 with all the major annoyances and flaws. You remember how horrible that was, yes? Also keep in mind the OP was asking 1.x users why we like that viewer. We were simply responding only to have other people come into the discussion telling up why we're "wrong". P.S. There's nothing stopping you or anyone else from starting a thread expressing why you use and enjoy v2.
  23. Tristizia Demonista wrote: anna Acanthus wrote: Pie menu is faster to use because the visual field is larger but takes less space on the screen than drop down. A circular display of information is easier for the eye thence the brain to integrate than a linear. Also the pie menu disappears as soon as the section is selected . Pie is faster. Period. This certainly explains why evry OS, every (non-SL) Software for the last 20 years or something has a Pie-Menu! Ohh, wait, they don't ! I wouldn't go down that road if I was you. Almost every major piece of software made since the graphical user interface era began uses standard File, Edit and View menus, yet v2 did away with them. Apparently somewhere between original v2 and 2.x when those standards were dumped it was decided that "industry standards" mean little. I personally sat in a Snowstorm user group meeting and heard Oz Linden himself say that he didn't care about industry standards. Can't have it both ways. We get that some of you guys are die-hard v2 lovers. Cool. It works for you. More power to you. But it's annoying to have our (along with a major portion of the SL customer base) legitimate reasons for not loving v2 dismissed by snarky comments or personal attacks. I say again: if v2 was so intuitive, so technically superior, so much better than other alternatives why doesn't everyone switch? Why did Tom Hale, the VP in charge of v2 development, (alledgedly) get canned for it's failure? Why have 2 LL CEOs apologized for it's shortcomings? I'm still waiting for some of the v2 stalwarts to answer any or all of these questions.
  24. A couple of hours ago I RICed one of the accounts that was spamming the sports links the other day. I'd think these accounts would be summarily banned but, appears not.
  25. Sure. Get a job working for Linden Lab. Apply here.
