  1. I wanted a first name that would go well with my last and that sounded vaguely eastern so, I went with Deej. I guess it works since I've occasionally been asked if I was Turkish or Indian. I later learned that Kasshiki is a kind of mask used in Japanese kabuki theatre. If I'd known that at the time I might have gone with a slightly Japanese-inspired first name.
  2. In the TOS it states (I'm paraphrasing here) that the service can be terminated at any time and for any reason and you have no recourse or expectation that you'll be able to get any kind of a refund. (Section 4.2) My advice if you really feel that SL is circling the drain is: don't invest any (more) RL funds and if you have items you can sell and cash out, do so before it's too late. That's the only strategy that I'm aware of.
  3. But what happens when a dog enters the room and barks, thus freaking out the cat, causing it to hunch its back? Wouldn't that disrupt the laminar airflow over the cat's back causing a turbulence vortex and leading to a stalled condition? :smileywink:
  4. Name the date and I'll try to be there with as many lag inducing weapons as I can muster. I haven't had a good firefight in years! Would be a huge laugh.
  5. I agree about the automated "greeters". Sadly the grid is now filled with these atrocities. I hate getting bombed with dialogs, notecards, LMs, etc when I've barely had a chance to set foot inside the place, much less giving me enough time for everything to rez so I can determine if I even want to hang around. I think it's become a cheap, lazy way for merchants to appear to offer customer service without actually doing so.
  6. If you are dead set on using a laptop be aware that you're likely not going to get acceptable SL performance, especially one that uses Intel integrated graphics. Most laptops, with the exception of some higher-end "gaming" models that have dedicated graphics chips, just don't have the horsepower needed to play SL, even on low settings. These forums are filled with people having major problems trying to run SL on laptops. I'd really recommend that you look at a desktop with a dedicated graphics card if at all possible. Otherwise be prepared for a painful and frustrating SL experience.
  7. Or, more than likely, just a coincidence. There's no way a mere mortal (non-Linden) can obtain your contact info unless you've provided it somewhere. Keep in mind that "somewhere" can also include places on the greater internet as well as inside SL or the SL websites.
  8. It appears that the Lab has no clue...again. I'd dearly love to be proven wrong but, I don't think I will be.
  9. What Rollig said. If the LL viewer doesn't work for you, why beat your head against a wall? If a TPV works for you use it and get on with your fun.
  10. SL just doesn't play well with Intel integrated graphics chips, plain and simple. The fact that you can play the games you listed doesn't really say a lot for the reasons stated by another poster. Every game engine is different and SL is an even more unique case due to the user created (non-optimized) content. Even people who use high-end "gaming" laptops equipped with dedicated graphics chips struggle to run SL.
  11. If it's in world then LL definitely would have jurisdiction. File an AR so the Lindens can investigate.

It's by far the best way, and I should know, I'm British !! :matte-motes-big-grin: Oh no! Would we then also have to start spelling words with extra 'u' s in them, and change words like 'spelled' to 'spelt'? Nooooooo! It's mm/dd/yyyy dammit! We kicked you people out of here once and now you're trying to sneak back in through the back door, eh? :smileywink:
  13. If the material's not posted in game or on a website or property that Linden Lab has control over there's nothing they can do. You'd need to contact the operator of the alleged defaming site directly.
  14. Also take a look at Moda Modeling School. They've been around a long time and, more importantly, the instructors and owners have many contacts within the SL clothing design and retail communities so that they can get you pointed in the right direction (read working) after graduation.
  15. Storm I remember the original version where people who committed low level "crimes" in world were sent. Back then there were frequently Lindens in world who enjoyed interacting with residents. A friend and me caught up with one and asked if we could be sent there for a few mnutes just to see what this mysterious (and dreaded) place looked like. It honestly creeped me the hell out. Once in you were totally cut off from the rest of the grid. It's cool to see the place revived so that newer people can get a taste of this part of SL history.
  16. The old Nigerian inheritance scam now aimed at avatars. Wow, things must be getting pretty desperate over there to be targeting phony people with this phony... oh wait, there is a certain symmetry to it after all. :matte-motes-big-grin-wink:

I kick kittens, loosen the screws in elderly peoples' walkers and steal kids' lunch money. What's your point? It's still a hideously proportioned avatar with gnarly hair that his mommy dressed in ladies' undies. :smileyvery-happy: You naughty troll.
  18. When will guys learn that all sliders to 100, tiny T. Rex arms and a pin head does NOT equal sexy? And is there only 1 style of free hair out there?
  19. Peter I understand what you're saying but, I have to point out; beta or not, if LL expects people (content creators or average residents) to invest their time and money in this platform, then security of their in world assets has to be the top priority. The entire virtual economy is based on us having rock-solid availability of our inventories. If I were a big-time builder say, and spent months putting together an amazing new sim then, saved it to inventory and logged out only to find it all gone the next time I logged in would I want to continue working in SL? How would "JaneAverage Resident" feel if she'd just spent L$20,000 on a new home and furnishings and the same happened to her? Hell, on some days (like yesterday) you can't even conduct a simple conversation in local chat without it either vanishing into the ether or having it delayed. There's just no excuse for these kinds of ongoing issues that go to core functionality after 8 years. None.
  20. For me there are still too many compromises that need to be made vs the possible gains. This is especially true in light of the fact that as a guy non-mesh pants and shirts work just fine. If I was female and didn't mind changing my avatar to fit the clothes and could put up with learning a new, slower and buggier viewer and could deal with the bugs and instability of a new technology... But, I have to admit, the pics of dresses and skirts I've seen do look pretty darned good. I can understand why you ladies are tempted to jump on the wagon early.

  22. I would hope these meetings would return as I found the few I was able to attend informative. But, given the fact that the group has been inactive for so long and was scrapped with no explanation, I'm not getting my hopes up. It appears that the Lab no longer wants direct input from non-programmers.
  23. What is this, pick a fight day or something? I must have missed the memo. What is your issue here? You might want to go back and refer to the guy in the OP who stated that someone wearing wings wouldn't be taken seriously. Yeah, my opinion is that SL could be more than people all looking like 8' tall glamazons living in castles but hey, do they have the right to do so? Yep. Do I respect their choice? Sure do. Not my cup of tea but, their world, their imagination.I just chose something different. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean I disrespect it. And now it's time for me to bow out. I've had enough of this nonsense. If you want to argue argue with yourself.
  24. Um, no. Not at all. Since the vast majority of people who are my friends in SL wear human avs that would be pretty illogical of me to think that way. I most certainly don't "look down" on anyone's choice. That's their business, not mine. Just making an observation regarding the people who are vociferous about insisting that everyone should be like them, e.g. the "you won't be taken seriously if you wear wings" person from the OP.
  25. When I was fairly new I was sitting alone at an outpost of the RP group I was in when I was joined by a person dressed in an amazing blue angel (or maybe fairy) avatar. We started chatting and it turned out that she was an artist and had joined SL to explore the cultural and artistic communities. After a while she commented about how sad it was that in a virtual world where we could fly, live in the clouds or underwater and choose any form we liked that the majority of people made idelized human avatars and lived in suburban style houses. That conversation has stuck with me to this day and it's so true; most people are followers and either unwilling or unable to use their imaginations or to think outside of the mundane. When they see someone wearing wings, or dressed as a tiny wind-up toy or an anthropomorph it jars their concept of "normal" and they sometimes lash out. The best way tro deal with these types is to understand their self-imposed limits and simply ignore them. A person once asked me why I didn't want to be "human" here. I turned it around and asked him why he did? He couldn't answer the question.
