  1. Plain vanilla LL 1.23.5 is one thing (and you didn't make that distinction originally-- you painted all 1.x TPVs with the obsolete brush) but Phoenix, Imprudence, etc that are based on Snowglobe are another matter altogether. Right now the only things they can't handle that v2 can are mesh and bouncing boobies, err... avatar physics.
  2. There's so much crap and FUD being spread around about the 1.x series viewers that it would be awesome if LL would make an official statement and STICKY IT in these forums. Despite what some are saying the 1.x viewers (more specifically the ones like Phoenix and Imprudence based on the Snowglobe 1.5 code) are indeed still useful and will remain so for the near future, No, they won't be able to see mesh but just like sculpties before, the widespread adoption of mesh isn't going to happen overnight. Contrary to what someone else posted the Snowglobe-based viewers have been updated to use most of the technologies in v2 including alpha layers, display names, media on a prim and much more. I still use Snowglobe on a daily basis and it works just fine. It's faster, more stable and MORE USABLE (for me) than the bug-laden mess that is v2.8. The things it can't do are either handled by various gadgets I own or I don't care about. For me having a stable and familiar SL experience trumps having access to the latest superflous shinies. Yes, the end is coming for the 1.x series viewers, but that day is NOT today, not next month and probably not for many months to come. When the things you care about doing/experiencing in SL are no longer possible using a 1.x viewer, then you'll know the time is right to switch.
  3. If it's a security flaw/exploit the JIRA won't be publicly accessible (assuming there is one) for obvious reasons.
  4. No Mayalily you won't lose anything because of mesh. Mesh is just another way to build things in SL. It won't replace or change anything you already own or your avatar in any way. The only thing that may change is your ability to SEE these mesh items if you're using a viewer that can't display mesh. That's it. Period. Don't stress over this stuff. All your inventory and your avatar are safe. Nothing will change for you. :smileyhappy:
  5. Mayalilly I really wouldn't stress over any of this. Despite what some would have you believe Mesh isn't going to take over the world overnight (I was here when sculpties arrived and that transition took months) and the Phoenix devs aren't going to wave a wand and make it disappear the day after mesh comes to the whole grid. The bottom line is that people will either make the switch to something v2-based when they feel the time is right or, if for whatever reason they can't, they'll leave. Keep in mind that some people like me have continued using LL 1.23 or Snowglobe (the Lab's original open source viewer that Phoenix, Imprudence and others are based on) even though they can't render display names, alpha layers, media on a prim, etc. Not seeing any of that stuff doesn't affect my daily SL in the least. I use it because it's fast, familiar and stable even though my computer's capable of running v2. When I decide that I'm missing out on things that matter to me and it appears that the technology is stable then I'll move to Firestorm. I certainly won't be making that decision based on FUD or hyperbole being spread by some chattering head LL fanboy/girl on a forum. (P.S. I went to a mesh sandbox using Firestorm just to see how mesh stuff appears on a non-mesh viewer and the mesh items looked like un rezzed sculpties, that is blobs. Meh, whatever. I can live with that for now.)

If you're going to go on a trolling bitchfest, at least make an attempt at spelling and grammar, and perhaps highlight the differences. Especially when the developers you're siding with cannot be trusted. 1. Old tired response to anyone who dares voice an opinion about the numerous issues in V2. The fact that KirstenLee Cinquetti, the Firestorm team, the Imprudence team, and numerous TPV developers have managed to massively modily the base LL code for better performance and usability shows that someone indeed can do better than LL. Also minus points for raising a non sequitur and a strawman. One need not be a programmer or software engineer in order to point out well-known and easily reproduced bugs any more than one need be an automotive engineer to point out that a 1985 Yugo is in fact a terrible car. One need only be a driver. 2. False. Wholly different development team. The 40% or so of the SL playerbase who use Phoenix/Firestorm would also strongly disagree that there's anything untoward with Phoenix. As their code is totally open source and easily auditable by anyone who cares to do so, if there were malicious code contained therein it would be found and someone would blow the whistle. Maybe YOU should get your facts straight before admonishing others.
  7. Want to share what the problem was and how you fixed it?
  8. All I had to do was join the Mesh Volunteers group and have that tag active. I didn't do the tutorial as I have no intention of creating content. I just wanted to take a look around. You may need to try several different sandboxes, although I had no trouble at all once the group tag was active.
  9. leliel Mirihi wrote: I have a 560 Ti and I'm also using linux and shadow work just fine for me. I too can see the shadows but, the question is, what kind of frame rats are you getting? As I said my GTX 460 can render the scene just fine but, at 5-7 fps, it's hardly what I'd consider playable performance.
  10. Based on the model number that's a mobile (laptop) graphics chip. It's FAR better than the crappy Intel integrated graphics found in many laptops, but since mobile graphics chips are designed more for low power usage and longer battery life than flat out performance don't expect it to handle SL as well as a full sized desktop video card.
  11. Ceera I think you better have a fairly stout video card if my little test is any indication. My 7 month old Windows 7 system with a 3.4 GHz AMD Phenom II quad core processor, 4 GB OCZ DDR3 memory and Nvidia GTX 460 SE 1 GB vid card got choked down to a pitiful 5 fps with shadows enabled (I tested using the latest Firestorm beta 2.5x). I normally run SL on high (not ultra) settings, 128 m draw distance and typically get 40-60 fps. On medium settings I can get above 80 depending on sim, number of avatars present, etc. I know the GTX 460 SE is a pretty middle of the road video card, but it's a current generation product and far from being a dog. I guess if you only need to take a few still photos with all the shadows and eye candy on 5 fps is ok, but if you actually want it enabled full time you'll probably have to look at one of the top end gaming vid cards (like the Nvidia 560/580 series) and be prepared to pay big bucks. (Edited to add that after these results there was no way I was going to try this on my MacBook Pro. The SL Mac viewer gives me enough problems as is without trying any experiments...)

  13. Ishtara Rothschild wrote: I get the same overall message from viewer 2. "AWAY, go AWAY, far AWAY from this viewer. Go and wash the dishes or something, anything to get AWAY from this mess." I so wish we could give kudos, likes or whatever to posts in this area of the forums. You hit the nail right on the head Ishtara. Viewer 2, along with the rest of the ill-conceived ideas from the Lab over the past couple of years, has pretty much driven me away to other online entertainment.
  14. Ishtara Rothschild wrote: I don't even care anymore. Of course this isn't anything that we actually need, unlike the ton of things that we've been asking for and don't get (such as a decent alternative UI for viewer 2, which is kind of urgent now that mesh is here, or an SL grid without all the bugs that were already around in 2003), but why even bother complaining. Might as well go outside and shout at the sidewalk. All that I'm asking for is that I'm at least informed about new features and LL's arbitrary decisions at some point, but it seems that even that is asking too much. People can now write $#!+ about me in my very SL profile? Yeah, whatever, I'm sure that will lure the facebook crowd in droves. But please communicate with us, your loyal customers, even if we are no longer your target group and you detest us as much as you hate your own product. I've searched the blog for "feed" and couldn't find anything. Even M did a better job at customer communication than R does. Talk to us, and, for the love of Cthulhu, make this kind of thing opt-in instead of opt-out. I agree with everything Ishtara said. The Lab is all about creating new stuff that's apparently pretty easy to implement in the hopes of attracting new people from the social networking generation and ignoring the hard things like fixing their creaky network infrastructure or making the horrid v2 UI actually usable. Sure, they've recently applied some bandages to some long-standing issues like group chat, but it seems the new direction is to spend valuable resources on creating "features" like web profiles and bouncing boobs. Come on LL, I don't even ask that you do the "right thing" by your customers anymore. I would like some advance warning for when you implement new "features" like this social networking crap though. Oh, and how about setting it up so that it's default is OFF and not ON? edited to fix a horrid typo!
  15. Mickey Vandeverre wrote: I just did a search for your name to see if anything showed on your page, and your profile is not appearing at all. Did you set your profile not to show? Does that apply to inworld too? I've set things to be visible from within SL so you should be able to see my profile inworld.
  16. Alazarin Mondrian wrote: Deej, are you sure you're not seeing your feed because you've inadvertently looged into the SL website. I've checked with one of my alts on 2 different browsers. One, which is logged in, shows all the tabs [Feed, About, Picks, Groups, Notes]. The other, which isn't logged in, only shows the SL part of the 'About' tab and witholds the first life info. Or maybe I've misunderstood your problem. Ah, so there's the problem. I was indeed looking from the website. Thanks for the info Alazarin.
  17. I wish I could call it 'gone" or "permanently turned the hell off" but sadly I can't. Yesterday when I first heard about LL's latest "feature" I went to my privacy settings and set the wall writing to 'Nobody' thinking that would kill the spam. Wrong. I'm seeing crap that friends are writing (to each other or on their walls I suppose) but it's still appearing on my Home page. What the...? I've since gone in and unchecked all the Notifications boxes. Will that do the trick? Is there really no way to opt out of this garbage like Ceera said in her posts? It would be nice to get some advance warning about this stuff. Once again LL has (silently) rolled out their latest big idea, with the security settings wide open no less and no apparent way to shut it off. Please LL give those of us who don't want to be participate in your latest experiment a way to opt out. I don't think that's asking too much.
  18. I sort of agree Chelsea but, having said that, there's only so much that can be done with the v2 base code, apparently. Compared to LL's UI Firestorm's is pretty customizable so that I'm not pulling my hair out fighting it. It's also possible to make it work and (mostly) feel like Phoenix/v1. I feel like there's hope for Firestorm. The FS devs really listen to the user community and want to make the transition for Phoenix/v1 users less painful. They'll keep working to beat v2's nasty UI into something more user friendly. Too bad the same can't be said for LL.
  19. I have to agree that with the increasing numbers of rumors and FUD concerning the "end" of the 1.x viewer series it's time for LL to stop playing coy and give us some official information, assuming they even have an idea. Is it too much to ask for some kind of a timeline/roadmap blog post? Even something tentative and filled with disclaimers would be better than silence from the Lab and the subsequent rumors rushing in to fill the vacuum. I understand that things may be in flux at the moment and the powers that be want to manage expectations, but remaining silent while FUD is starting to spread isn't the answer.
  20. No, there's no need to be concerned about it. The logging really only pertains to Lindens (who are the only accounts with the abilities to actually use the Admin commands) so that they have an audit trail of activity. It's a way to ensure the Lindens are accountable for their actions since they can change item permissions, set land sale prices, boot avatars from sims, etc. Everyone who's ever enabled the Admin menu (including me) has gotten these messages while playing around and nothing's ever come of it.
  21. Don't you remember Independence Day? We'd be squashed like bugs. Oh, and the aliens would have anti-virus software installed this time...
  22. Based on all the male shapes I see who are 7' tall with shoulders as wide as Texas, the torso muscle sliders cranked to 100, painfully short alligator arms and tree stump legs I'd say yes, many are in need of shape guidance. It would be great if LL included some realistically proportioned starter avs and maybe some general notes on avatar customization. (The glamazon ladies with the enormous prim boobs, snake thin torsos and wide load butts aren't any better, btw. Don't want you ladies to feel left out :smileywink:)
  23. First off, don't panic. This happens fairly often, especially if you bought the items from Marketplace when you weren't also logged into SL to receive them. I recommend sending a polite notecard to the store owner explaining the situation. Give them the date and approx. time and the items you bought. If you want you can copy/paste your transaction history details from your dashboard page on the main SL website (log in, click on Account, then choose Transaction History and choose the date you made the purchases. Your purchases will be listed showing the date, time, transaction number and what you bought). The merchant will also have a record of what was bought and whether it was delivered or not, but it's always helpful if you can provide as much info as possible. You can also go to the store and check to see if there's a "redeliver" or "failed delivery" sign or box you can click on. Many stores use these automated systems so you don't have to wait for the merchant to be online. Hope this helps!
  24. If by "change" you mean "modify", the answer is no. Linden homes are no modify so you can't add walls, remove windows, etc. There is a control panel that links to the home's website that gives you some customization options, however. The control panel lets you turn lights on or off, change the wall colors (inside and outside), change the floor textures, window shades and more. If you want to try another one of the house styles you can abandon your current Linden home and pick another.
  25. So much for all the talk of a new era of improved communication between the Lab and residents... :smileysad: Same LL, different day.
