  1. Keep in mind we're residents volunteering to help in here. We're not LL employees and have no special magic wand to wave to make things work. (If i did, I'd be the CEO and SL would be bigger than WoW) Having said that, you could try taking a breath and then contacting support although from this update on the Grid Status webpage it seems there was a problem with buying L$ earlier that's now been fixed. Also if you've never bought before you may need to verify your payment info. See this page for details. If you still have issues buying L$ then you'll need to contact support and file a ticket or, call LL's Billing Dept, using their toll-free number.
  2. Yes I'm also seeing a general decrease in performance as well.
  3. As Linda said your laptop graphics are holding you back. Search through these forums and you'll see them filled with people complaining about how poorly SL performs on laptops in particular. Unlike other games SL's content isn't created and optimized by professional 3-D artists (for the most part) and therefore requires a lot more horsepower to render. If you have access to a desktop computer with a graphics card made within the last 2 years you should be fine. Otherwise lowest settings and low framerates are what you're stuck with on your laptop.
  4. Don't care and leaning towards hate at this point because: When the Lab updated the server code for mesh it really played hell with the physics. Combat games, sports games (like my beloved GOHA hockey), flight and sailing were broken and there are still odd physics issues to this day. Also some recent changes to the server code has changed how prims are counted (one day my humble treehouse was 63, the next it jumped to over 400--needless to say my landlord wasn't thrilled) and several other oddities. Inability of rigged mesh items to adapt to unique avatar shapes. Many people still can't see mesh even using mesh enabled viewers. Creating mesh items must be done in an complex, often times expensive, professional-grade external programs. Rezzed mesh items' land impact can vary wildly depending on whether it's scripted, resized, etc. All in all it just doesn't seem like a very friendly system for the average person and unless and until it becomes so, it won't be adopted as we've seen.
  5. I really wish you Brits spoke a language that we could all understand... :matte-motes-sarcasm:
  6. Ayesha Askham wrote: This is another example of one part of Linden Lab not communicating/co-ordinating with another. We are starting a Main Server Roll and now we have Inventory Maintenance. Now I was always told not to fiddle with two variables at once when upgrading or fettling a system, because if something went wrong you wouldn't know which caused the problem. I doubt if the laws of logic have changed recently. We are using a system that is run by an incompetent organisation. Note what I wrote. It is not the individuals, but the organisation that causes most of our problems. (Emphasis mine) Truer words have never been spoken in these forums.
  7. With respect Natales your blog isn't a source of official communication from Linden Lab. I've read it and know that you get a lot of information from speaking with Lindens and participating in the few groups still in existence that allow us to communicate directly with Lab employees. However, how many people know of your blog as compared to say, the main SL website? My point is that I shouldn't have to depend on another resident (customer) to provide me with information. I should be getting official statements on important matters from someone within the organization who has both the knowledge and the authority to make those statements. I've worked for a large corporation and I know quite well that LL isn't a monolothic organization. But, as a customer, that's not my concern. I really don't care which Linden is responsible for what. My point is that LL has traditionally done an exceptionally poor job of keeping us informed. I'm not asking for proprietary company information. I'm not asking to see their financial records, or for Rodvik's home address. I just want some simple questions answered in a timely manner and I don't want it on Twitter or Facebook or someone's Blogger page, I want it on Secondlife.com. I really don't feel that's an unreasonable request. If I want to research a Toyota Prius before buying it's not reasonable to expect me to start by finding some guy's YouTube video of his test drive. I'd want to start at Toyota's official website. P.S. I misunderstood what you were saying Irene. I agree. :smileyhappy:
  8. Irene Muni wrote: @Rolig and @Janelle: Your comments are one more reason to wonder why LL is so reluctant to answer (and solve) the comments of threads as http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Forums-Feedback/Second-Life-Answers-Feedback/td-p/700445 or as http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Forums-Feedback/Comments-Link/td-p/1354207 Reluctant to respond to customer issues because of a frustrated customer's comments on a website? Really? Linden Research, Inc. is not a volunteer organization run by well-meaning amateurs. They are a for profit corporation managed by and staffed with (supposedly) professional adults. We, as customers who are paying them to provide a service, have every right to complain when the quality of that service does not meet our expectations or, when the company does not live up to its commitments. That doesn't give people permission to be rude, insulting or make personal attacks but, receiving (and acting on) customer feedback, positive or negative, is part of running a business. Conversely, ignoring that feedback is why so many companies fail. From a practical standpoint the Lindens have brought this upon themselves by their continual refusal to engage in any kind of meaningful dialogue with us, their customers. People ask legitimate questions. express concerns or, share ideas to improve SL and are continually met with silence from Linden Lab. Remember the big push last year right after Rod took over towards better communication and the set up of User Groups? Gee, where has all that gone? There used to be in world meetings between us and Lindens in various areas like Commerce (for merchants), Community Tools (these forums and blogs), Open Source Developers, etc. Those have all been dormant for months now. How often do we even get a simple, "We understand your frustrations and we share them. We're working on x, y and z to make things better"? Is it too much to expect a short regular communication about what progress is being made with various issues or, Heaven forbid, some idea as to the strategic direction management wants to take SL?
  9. My Fennec av is 5'10" (1.78 m) and my Grey Wolf is 6'4" (1.94 m) according to the Cool VL appearance editor. I can well relate to what others have said here about feeling "small" when standing among the redwood tree sized human avatars that are so common. It seems that the average SL male is over 7' tall and the women not far behind. (Their proportions are usually horrible too with pin heads sitting on mile wide shoulders, T-Rex tiny arms and tree trunk legs but, that's another discussion) Scales are totally off but, we've known that for a long time. Personally I have no issue if someone wants to be a giant but, it makes it difficult for smaller-sized avatars when buying clothes or furniture. I bought some pants recently that included a really cool (moddable) belt. I was surprised that even at the smallest I could make it, the belt was still WAY too large for my Fennec. I switched to the Wolf and it was a little better but not much! Same thing happened with a denim vest I bought a few days later so, it seems that many designers have scaled up their creations for the larger crowd.
  10. I really think someone should explain the whole concept of "opt-in" to the devs at the Lab. While they're at it can they also teach LL the meaning of the following: customer relations, customer communication, documentation... well, I think you get the point. :smileywink:
  11. I agree Snickers. I like and appreciate Torley's work and I don't want to specifically nail his depth of field/shadows proof of concept photo but, the Lab has come up with some pretty horrendous marketing photos lately. The current vampire on the SL main web page is just the latest example. Back around Halloween there was one promoting Marketplace with the avatar "model" wearing prim parts from two different outfits, and ghastly lighting. (And I don't mean "scary" and appropriate for Halloween, I mean it looked like crap) The current Marketplace main page "Cuddle with your loved ones" pic is pretty nasty too, IMO. The Lab would do well to take a look at any of the excellent resident-created blogs, Flickr feeds, Facebook pages, etc. to see how great their platform can look and "borrow" some ideas!
  12. A couple of unsolicited notecards isn't that big a deal. The AR system has a large enough backlog without adding to it with these kinds of minor issues. If it keeps up contact the sender and ask to be removed from their spam list. If it persists then, think about filing an AR.
  13. This gets asked at least once a week it seems. The problem is that even though mobile devices are a lot more powerful than they used to be, they still don't have the graphics horsepower to run SL. Even if Linden Lab were to write a very stripped down viewer the main issue remains the player made content that makes up the SL world; it's just isn't professionally optimized for display on these devices. Even so-called gaming laptops with discrete graphics chips have trouble running SL so, there's no way it's going to happen on a phone or tablet. Your only option for your tablet is one of the text-only clients, at least until there's some major technological breakthrough in mobile graphics chips (or the laws of physics change).
  14. Sadly nothing will change until large numbers of sim owners dump their land. That's the only thing that will open the eyes of the Lab. I'm not even sure if that would make a difference due to the vast holdings of the major land barons who are paying much less than the $295/month standard rate and are therefore able to undercut their competition while still making a profit but, it's the only thing the Lab will understand. People have begged for lower pricing for years and it hasn't happened. The Lab's costs have dropped due to more automation, running more sims per server, etc yet, those savings aren't being passed along. Time to quit being polite and hit these guys where it hurts; the bottom line.
  15. I looked at my friends list and it seems that I'm only following 1 person although, the green button next to each of the 227 on my friends list shows as 'following'. I guess I'll have to go through and manually uncheck all of them... what a waste of time. :smileymad: Why can't they deploy this stuff with the defaults set to 'off'?
  16. I stopped paying attention when I learned, much to my chagrin, that 40 is "elderly". Is it time for my applesauce and evening pill yet? Where's my walker? Get off my lawn you dang kids! :matte-motes-evil-invert:
  17. I'm with you guys on this whole FB wannabe "feed" thing. In another thread I questioned why the hell the follow function was set BY DEFAULT to have you automatically follow everyone on your friends list (and they automatically follow you back). When I posted that it seemed there was a way to manually un-follow your friends (a pain when you have 5 years worth of folks on your list but, ok...doable). That option seems to have vanished. I now see no way to get around seeing the routine ramblings, display name changes, profile pic changes, etc. other than just ignoring the whole web-based mess. I guess that's what I'll do since the Lab seems determined to force this on us. Well, I'll occasionally pop in to make sure that I turn off whatever new shiny "feature" they add next.
  18. Nope, don't use it except for the time I posted a question to Rodvik's and actually got a response. My own is blank and closed to posting. I don't follow anyone either (although I see a close friend is now following me). I just don't care for the whole FB thing.
  19. Carole Franizzi wrote: You know, Mac, I'm beginning to suspect LL doesn't love us anymore. I'm not entirely convinced they even like us that much. No, really? I'm shocked to hear this... :smileywink:
  20. Perrie Juran wrote: Point is what would a reasonable person expect. Although it appears on a regular basis every 75 years, I don't think the average person would use the word "regular" when discussing Halley's Comet unless they were talking in astronomical terms. We can only hope the timing for the regular appearance of new gifts is not astronomical. If the timing were to be once a year, I would consider it a deceptive use of the word. Exactly this. Great point Perrie. When will the Lab learn that when they announce these initiatives that we expect them to keep their word and to follow up on them? Too often they hype some new thing then rush on to the next big idea, totally forgetting about what they promised to deliver previously. A lot less marketing and weasily wordsmithing and a lot more honest communication would go a long way toward customer satisfaction. If you're planning to make these gifts monthly, quarterly, or annually then dammit, just say that up front! Hell, if you don't really have the details worked out yet (which I suspect is the case here) then, say that! There'd be a lot more trust and a lot less griping doing it this way.
  21. I don't know whether there was a glitch with the defaults of the follow feature or the Lab decided to change the defaults but I'm no longer following everyone on my friends list and they're no longer following me back. In any case I guess thanks are due for getting this sorted out.
  22. Rhett Linden wrote: For now yes. And again we clearly need to improve this new and evolving area. But question for you - you don't want to see any of your Friends posts? We introduced "Followers" as we understood that the new web profiles and feeds strained the "Friends" behavior in SL which has other implications of online status, etc. The model is evolving and I'm interested in what behavior you are going for as it relates to the profiles. I'd really rather the default be set to NOT follow. It's not that I'm antisocial but, I have a few contacts who are extremely chatty and their posts are taking over the feed. I'd much rather be able to opt in to the small number of posts I'd like to receive than be forced to manually opt out of 200+.
  23. So the only way to get around this default is to manually un-follow everyone on your friends list? Why was this behavior made the default?
