  1. Valerie gave you a link to a good web site that tells you exactly how to use the "8.8.8.8" numbers. Here it is again >>> http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html. Follow the instructions and your problem should be solved.
  2. Not if the 512 sq m of land is the parcel that your Linden Home is on. Otherwise, yes. The deal is that you get either a 512 sq m parcel with a Linden Home on it or free tier for 512 sq m that you can apply toward your monthly fee on a different parcel.
  3. Welcome to Second Life. I'm sorry that this happened so soon after ytou got here, but don't panic. It can sometimes take anywhere from a few minutes to a day or more for your items to be delivered, especially if the merchant's Magic Box is temporarily out of service or the sim it's on is offline. The Magic Box delivery system leaves a lot to be desired. Not that it helps now, but to remember for the future: (1) Don't overuse the shopping cart. It is easily confused if you put more than a couple of things in it. (2) Don't buy things from Marketplace (especially LOTS of things) unless you are in world to receive them at the time. We each have an "in box" that holds IMs, notecards, group notices, group invitations, and anything that is delivered to us if we aren't in world at the time. That "in box" can only hold 25 things, total. If anything else comes in, it isn't saved. It is gone ... poof .... forever. If you have a mess of things delivered from Marketplace and half your friends send you notecards, that in box will be capped and you will never know what happened. So, what do you do now? ....... To get a record of the individual items in your order, open Marketplace and click the My Marketplace menu at the top of the page. Select My Account >> Order History from the pulldown menu. If you do not receive items within about 24 hours, you should cut and paste the information about a missing item from that Order History and send it in a IM or notecard to the merchant, along with a polite message requesting redelivery. Most merchants are very kind and willing to redeliver. This happens all the time and they are aware of it. Do be patient, though. Not everyone logs in to SL every day or checks their e-mail. If you still haven't heard in another day or two, follow it up with a second polite note and finally, if you STILL haven't heard, file a support ticket at https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/ , selecting Marketplace from the pulldown menu.
  4. There's no point in shouting. I can hear you perfectly well. Clearing cache almost always does solve exactly this problem, or I wouldn't have suggested it. Your locally cached inventory is clearly messed up, because there's no other way for something like this to happen. If clearing cache doesn't fix things, it's because there is something more fundamental that is corrupting it all over again once it has been cleared. The culprit is usually an unstable internet connection, often traceable to your router. That's harder to diagnose from a distance. One simple first step, though, is just to reboot it by unplugging it from the power for a few minutes. No guarantees, but see if that helps. And please calm down.
  5. In further testing, I found that the "second" pose ball had a tendency to mess up its rotation when the av on it stood up. I have cured that by forcing the script to reset on rez or when both avs stand up, and to set both poseballs to ZERO_ROTATION when that happens. That seems to take care of the problem. I have updated the Double Walk Lead script in the post above.
  6. That's very unusual. Merchants usually double check the contents of a box pretty carefully before they put an item on the market. I have never heard of anyone getting an empty box. Were you buying no-copy items? If not, did you try rezzing the box from inventory again? All I can imagine is that the clothing items had names that you don't recognize, so you overlooked them when you looked through inventory for them. Try this .... Open inventory and click on the Recent tab. Then click the little gear symbol in the window's lower left corner and select "Show Filters". That will open another small window, in which you can set a date. Set it for a couple of days ago. The main window should now display everything that has been added to your inventory during that period. If you unpacked that box and clicked "Copy Contents to Inventory', they will show up somewhere in that list.
  7. When you change viewers, your inventory can get borked, especially if you weren't carefull to set different cache locations on your hard drive whern you installed the two viewers. So, clear your cache and reboot. That should take care of it.
  8. Aha. There's the question. :smileywink: The answer is that you "play" any way you like. There is no goal, no prize or points to win, and no rank to earn. Second Life is not a "game". It's.... well, it's a life. You can find cool games to play here, if that's what you're into, or you can create things, or attend musical events, go dancing, or do some power shopping, ...... or just lie on a beach with a friend. You decide. I suggest spending a little while learning how to move around and use your camera so you can see things. Then try out the Destinations button in your viewer and explore some of the neat places in SL. Introduce yourself to some people, and have fun.
  9. The default attachment point for any object that you wear is your right hand, so that's where it ends up unless you specify. When you make a copy, it doesn't carry a memory of where the original was attached, so you have to position it. It's really quite easy. Right click on the copy in your inventory and select "Attach to ..." and then select the attachment point that you want to use. The object will attach to that spot right away. It will also look funky because you still need to adjust its position. So, stand on a pose stand so that you don't keep wiggling around, and then select the object with your Build/Edit tool (CTRL + 3). Use the red/green/blue arrows to move it into position and then hold down the CTRL key and use the red/green/blue circles to rotate it gently. It takes a small amount of practice to make the gentle movements you will need for a perfect adjustment, but you can do it. Once you have the object where you want it, detach it back to inventory. When you wear it again, it will remember how you placed it, so you never need to do that again.
  10. The best way to avoid accidentally using someone else's image without permission is to make your own. Get yourself a good digital camera and photograph interesting things that you can turn into textures. Learn how to fly your favorite graphics program (Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, GIMP ...) for editing photos and drawing your own textures. Doing that not only gets around the whole issue of permissions, but it makes your work unique. And it's fun. :smileywink: If you do "find a free image of a butterfly somewhere", the honest thing to do is to be sure that you get it from a source that gives you explicit permission to use it. There are plenty of reputable sources on the Internet, and you'll find a rich selection of textures that other artists have for sale in world. There are constant debates here about how much you need to modify an image that you just "find" before it becomes yours. In my opinion, though, if you have to ask the answer is probably that you shouldn't be using it.
  11. That is a recognized problem for some SL residents, but there's no good answer or workaround that seems to satisfy everyone. Take a look at the answers that were posted here earlier today when we dealt with exactly the same question >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/Constant-crashing-when-editing-worn-mesh-Is-there-anyway-to-stop/qaq-p/1422149 . I'd suggest adding comments to one of the JIRAs that Innula referred to in her reply to that post. They might help th LL technical staff find a solution.
  12. While you are at the login screen but have not yet logged in, type CTRL + P to open your Preferences panel. In Preferences >> Graphics, UNcheck the box labelled Basic Shaders and then close the panel and log in. That may solve the black/gray problem for you. Without knowing more about your computer, however, it's hard to tell you what else to try. Check to be sure that your graphics card drivers are up to date. If you still need help, add more information to your question here by clicking on the Options link in its upper right corner and selecting EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  13. Aha! Thanks,Ceera. I have been avoiding the beta test, so I hadn't heard the new term.
  14. There's no such thing as a "merchant outbox", but you may be thinking of a Magic Box. Until SL finally gets through beta testing with the system that is meant to replace them, Magic Boxes serve as the real virtual stores for each of the merchants in Marketplace. Your items for sale are all stored in a Magic Box (a scripted prim that links to Marketplace by HTTP), which then receives information about sales and takes car of delivering each ordered item. You can get Magic Boxes free in Marketplace (search for them). To install and use one or more, read this >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Selling-in-the-Marketplace/ta-p/700193#Section_.5.3.1 and, more genarlly, the entire article that it's in.
  15. Good luck with it. Be prepared for some fiddling with sit targets, which will vary depending on how your animations are made. I tested this for several hours with my alt and was generally pleased with how nicely it worked. Because I was running two of us on the same machine -- not a top of the line elite machine either -- I found that I had to deal with quite a bit of lag unless we were both using the same set of animations. I suspect it would be different if I weren't trying to support both of us at the same time, but I haven't yet found a friend to take the place of my alt.
  16. That's probably true, and not a bad idea in general. You'd be surprised how many people actually do stay logged in for days on end (not exacly eternally, but a long time). Whether he checks only on rez or uses a timer event really depends on how picky the OP is about wanting to disable the device after 30 days. :smileywink:
  17. I can take up to 5 business days to process a payout to PayPal. If it has been longer than that since you processed your credit request, call the LL Billing office. The billing team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Toll-Free (US/Canada) 800.294.1067 Long-Distance 703.286.6277 Local Toll-Free numbers * France: 0805.101.490 * Germany: 0800.664.5510 * Japan: 0066.33.132.830 * Portugal: 800.814.450 * Spain: 800.300.560 * UK: 0800.048.4646 * Support is in English Only
  18. If each renter is on a separate parcel, then it's easy. The size of the parcel determines the prim allowance, unless you apply a bonus factor to redistribute part of your sim's prims to put extra ones in some parcels. If the renters are all on a common parcel, sharing land in a renter's group, the problem is more complicated. You can write a script that uses llGetParcelPrimOwners to list prim owners and how many prims they own. Your script could then let you know by IM or e-mail when anyone goes over the allowance you have assigned to their own shop. If you don't feel up to writing a script yourself, you can hire a scripter to do it. There are also commercial systems that do this sort of thing
  19. Nobody needs land. You might want land, but you don't need to have it. You won't end up sleeping under a bridge or in a cardboard box, and you won't have to rent a storage locker to put all your stuff in. If you don't want to pay for a Premium membership and qualify for a Linden Home, save your pennies until you can buy or rent a place. If that's what you want, it's worth waiting for.
  20. That's a very hard question to answer. Tip jars are not all created equal, and I don't have a clue how that particular one is scripted. Unless you have an instruction notecard or have mod permission on its script, you'll just have to experiment. Tip jars can be very simple .... basically a box that you can click on to pay the owner some amount that you choose. Some have a floating text that needs to be set, or offer a greeting of some kind. Some split the tips with a club owner. I would only caution you about one thing as you start to experiment. If you do not have mod permission, be sure that you are using a tip jar from a reputable source and not some freebie that you picked up in a back alley. A tip jar can be scripted to send its contents to anyone ... not necessarily the owner. Some are also scripted to make change or offer a refund or a prize of some kind. Those ones need to ask the owner for permission to debit his L$ account. Unless you know exactly what you are doing, do NOT grant that permission.
  21. Do anything you like. In SL, you can explore, create, meet people ..... If you are looking for an excellent place to start, I recommend Virtual Ability Island >>> http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Virtual%20Ability/127/128/23 . They have a very good set of introductory tutorials and they usually have helpful mentors standing by to answer questions. They are also much less crowded and confusing than some of LL's "official" welcome areas. You can get thaere by cutting and pasting that SLURL in just gave you into chat in your viewer when you are in world. Hit Enter so that the message chows up in your chat window and then click on it. You can also open your Map view (icon on the lower task bar) and type "Virtual Ability" into the search field. Then click Teleport to go there.
  22. Your viewer and SL's servers have temporarily lost the ability to talk to each other. Unless there's a problem with the servers (Always check http://status.secondlifegrid.net/ first), it's probably something on your end. So.... (1) Try shutting off your computer, unplugging the router and modem for a couple of minutes, and then plugging them back in and restarting. That simple step may clear up everything (2) Change your DNS settings from whatever your ISP assigns you as a default. Use Google's free public DNS servers instead. Here's how >>> http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ (3) If things are STILL messed up, contact your ISP. Maybe they are working on their Internet connections. Mine go down for about 20 minutes once a month or so while they are vacuuming dust out of their servers, or whatever they do.
  23. It's like any game you decide to play in SL. If you go to Marketplace and type in the keyword "pregnant", you will find many products that you can buy to create the illusion of pregnancy and childbirth.
  24. That's a communication problem between your computer and SL's servers, and it's very common. Information about your appearance has to be "baked" onto your avatar on your own computer, saved there, and then uploaded to SL before it's fully visible there. If the necessary information is messed up in transmission, you may end up with a borked file on your computer, or SL's servers may end up with a borked file. Either way, your av's appearance defaults to a fluffy cloud. Sometimes you might appear as a white egg or spot. Sometimes you seem to rez but have random textures all over your body. What works to repair the damage for one person won't necessarily work for the next person, and it may not be the same thing that works for you tomorrow. See the full list of possibilitites here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail . Start with the simple things at the top of the list and work down until you find what works for you today. You may find that the bake fail problem comes back repeatedly, even after you fix it with one of the suggestions on that wiki page. If so, you have a chronically weak Internet connection. There are many steps to take for repairing it. Perhaps the simplest ones -- ones that work best for most people -- are: (1) Don't Use WIRELESS. Wireless connections are inherently less stable than direct cable connections and are more vulnerable to interference. Then, (2) Reboot your router. Unplug it from the power for a few minutes to let it clear its RAM. The plug it back in and let it get a fresh hold on an IP address.
