  1. Don't expect to make huge earnings from work in Second Life. By comparison with what you can earn at a job in RL (even selling burgers and fries), SL jobs rarely pay very well. To succeed as a creator in SL, you need to develop good technical skills and then you need to create a good product line and a client base -- all of which take time. Creating is great fun --- I have been at it as a scripter, builder, and clothing designer here for five years --- but don't plan on giving up RL work to do it. Create for the enjoyment of making things, the intellectual satisfaction of solving a very tricky problem, and the pleasure of sharing your work with others. If you make money too, that's great.
  2. It may well be a problem with your graphics drivers. ATI graphics cards, in particular, seem to create odd effects for SL residents whenever Catalyst drivers need to be updated. Here's where to get new ones ... Nvidia Video Driver Latest driver Last checked Feb 6th- Windows: 285.62 (Oct 24) beta: 295.51 (Jan 31) - Linux: 290.1 (Nov 22)ATI Video Driver Latest driver Last checked Feb 6th- Windows and Linux: 12.1 (Jan 25)Intel Video Driver Intel driver download page Intel does not have a universal driver set. Please go to Intel's site and select the appropriate download. Here's another possibility too >>> [PUBLIC] Black Screen when I enable Lighting and Shadows Try just turning off lighting and shadows in Preferences >> Graphics (possibly turn off Anti-aliasing too).
  3. The best way is to write a totally new script. :smileywink: A.) Do you really want all of the doors in the house to open and close at the same time? That's rather unusual, although doable. In any case, you need only one script to handle all the doors in the house, whether you open them together or individually. Just give each door a distinctive name and then use llSetLinkPrimitiveParamsFast to manage any relevant changes in PRIM_POS_LOCAL and PRIM_ROT_LOCAL as you open and close the doors. B) if (llGetOwner() == llDetectedKey(0)) or words to that effect. If you are controlling the doors from a HUD, though, that's irrelevant, since the only person who will be able to operate the doors is the person with the HUD >>> the owner. C) Operating with a HUD is just a matter of substituting a listen event in the main script for the touch_start event that you would commonly use for opening a door. Touch a button in your HUD and have it send a message by llRegionSayTo to the main script, telling it which button you pushed. D) You could set up an elaborate system to check the building's position every once in a while and be sure that it hasn't changed. It would be more practical, however, to just include a "Reset" button in your HUD. Even more to the point, however, there shouldn't be any need to reset the doors. If they are linked to the house and the script is written properly, the doors should open and close correctly no matter how they are positioned. See http://community.secondlife.com/t5/LSL-Library/Simple-Hinge-Action/td-p/875331for one of the simplest and more reliable hinged doors in SL. A sliding door would be even easier since it doesn't need to be a cut prim, and it doesn't rotate.
  4. If you want to change your Linden Home, you have to abandon the one you already have. Be sure to pick up all your stuff first by taking each item that you may have rezzed back to your inventory individually --- NOT together as a lump. Then stand in your home and open World >> About Land . Click the Abandon Land button. You will then be free to go throught the process of choosing a new home, the same way you picked this one. You can do that up to 5 times in one day. Not all home styles are always available, however, so be patient. Stipends are paid VERY early in the morning (PST) on Tuesdays. If you became a member today after the week's stipend was paid, you will get your first one next Tuesday.

  6. That's a communication problem between your computer and SL's servers. Information about your appearance has to be "baked" onto your avatar on your own computer, saved there, and then uploaded to SL before it's fully visible there. If the necessary information is messed up in transmission, you may end up with a borked file on your computer, or SL's servers may end up with a borked image. Either way, your av's appearance defaults to a fluffy cloud. What works to repair the damage for one person won't necessarily work for the next person, and it may not be the same thing that works for you tomorrow. See the full list of possibilities here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail . Start with the simple things at the top of the list and work down until you find what works for you today. You may find that the bake fail problem comes back repeatedly, even after you fix it with one of the suggestions on that wiki page. If so, you have a chronically weak Internet connection. There are many steps to take for repairing it. Perhaps the simplest ones -- ones that work best for most people -- are: (1) Don't Use WIRELESS. Wireless connections are inherently less stable than direct cable connections and are more vulnerable to interference. Then, (2) Reboot your router. Unplug it from the power for a few minutes to let it clear its RAM. The plug it back in and let it get a fresh hold on an IP address.
  7. Nobody here can. We're all SL residents like you. However, if you have a non-technical issue related to billing concerns, you can call the Linden Lab billing team at the following toll-free numbers. They ought to be able to track down the problem with you. US/Canada: 800-294-1067 France: 0805-101-490 Germany: 0800-664-5510 Japan: 0066-33-132-830 Portugal: 800-814-450 Spain: 800-300-560 UK: 0800-048-4646 Brazil: 0800-762-1132 Long distance ( not free, but you can use Skype to save some cost ) : 703-286-6277 **Note: Support is offered only in English
  8. This problem was reported ( https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MAINT-672 ) as a glitch in the V3 and Firestorm viewers, but was supposedly resolved in the most recent version of each. As you'll see in that JIRA, the root of the problem is apparently the drivers for ATI graphics cards. Try updating yours to see if that cures the problem......... 10. Many merchants have now moved their inventory to the new Direct Delivery system, so many of the problems that we used to have with delivery from Magic Boxes are going away. Still, merchants won't be required to complete the transition to the DD system until summer, so some problems linger. Besides, even after DD is fully implemented, you should be aware of some things to avoid: 1. Your "in box" still has a cap of 25 IMs, group messages, group invitations, notecards, and objects. If you receive more than 25 items while you are off line or busy, the extra ones will not ever be delivered. 2. The Marketplace shopping cart tends to jam if you fill it too full, so you are better off buying only one or two items at once. Use the Buy Now button instead of the shopping cart if you can. 3. Direct Delivery items will show up in your new Received Items folder, at the bottom of your inventory. It's easy to overlook until you get used to looking there. If you ever find that something you ordered was not delivered, just send a polite note to the merchant, including informaion about your purchase that you have cut & pasted from your Transaction History. Please be patient. Merchants have RL responsibilities (and disasters) just like you do, and they may not be in world every day. If you don;t hear back in a couple of days, send a second polite note or submit a support ticket to LL.
  11. In Firestorm, it's in Preferences >> UI . I believe it's in the same place in Phoenix. You're looking for Hover Tips.
  12. Hehehe... I was being "delicate." Your mother would be glad that I chose my words carefully.
  13. If you have been in SL as long as I have, you might remember those days when we would end up badly folded after a TP, looking at just about that spot.
  14. Take a look at http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/wearing_entire_inventory . That might be the answer you are looking for.
  15. As far as I know, that's normal "expected" behavior for prim media. I have tended to avoid MOAP in many applications, though. Many people either do not use viewers that support MOAP or have deliberately turned off access to streamed media in Preferences to avoid IP capture issues. Despite your best efforts, therefore, MOAP will not be visible to many SL residents. If you're dealing with textures that do not need to be updated frequently, you'll find that more people will be able to see them if you simply upload standard image files and apply them to prims.
  16. Nope, at least not unexpected issues. Any sound files in SL have to be pre-loaded before a person can hear them. When writing a script, a scripter often does that by forcing a sound to play a low volume first and then playing it a second time so people can hear it. The scripter might also use the LSL language function llPreload Sound, which does the same thing. Neither option is available in gestures, however, so you commonly can't hear sounds in gestures until you have played them twice. That's just the way things work. If you hang around in laggy sims, the effect might just be a little more noticeable, I suppose.
  17. In the extreme upper right corner of this page, click My Settings, then Preferences >> Preference Options >> Automatically subscribe me to topics I participate in . That way, you will receive an e-mail message every time that someone else posts a message in any thread that you create or make a response in. You can also choose any specific thread that looks interesting and do the same thing. Click the Options link in its upper right corner and select Subscribe. One of the silly features of this software -- an annoyance for all of us -- is that you cannot post a new response to your own question. If you want to add information to THIS one, for example, all you can do is click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.

  19. I'm afraid you've lost me there. What "gift card page"? If you want to buy L$, you should be in the Lindex at https://secondlife.com/my/lindex/buy.php . Assuming that you have set up your credit card or PayPal account as the source to draw on, the purchase should go through almost instantaneously. It is possible for credit card transactions to fail, however. Here are some common reasons for credit card failure: You entered the credit card number incorrectly. You did not enter the billing address or entered it incorrectly. It should be the same address that appears on your bill. You did not enter the name on the card or entered differently from how it appears on the card. Be sure you updated your card's expiration date in the Second Life Billing Information page. The credit card is not in the list of accepted payment methods (see above) You did not enter the CVV (3 digits on the back, or 4 digits on the front for AmEx) or entered it incorrectly. The card is expired, or the expiration date was entered incorrectly. There are no funds available on the credit card to validate it. We send a US$1.00 authorization to ensure that a credit card is valid. This is not a billing, but the card must have at least US$1.00 available on it to pass validation. Your monthly payment limit is reached, and/or your bank is not authorizing any more transactions. The issuing bank has not pre-approved transactions with Linden Research, Inc. Contact the issuing bank to resolve the problem. If you are outside the US, your card may not be set up for international/overseas transactions (this is very common with Visa Electron). If none of the above applies, contact your credit card provider to determine the cause. You may also contact Linden Lab Billing Support. Note that Linden Lab does not accept most (any?) pre-paid credit cards or debit cards.
  20. I think you probably don't mean your SIM at all. That option to list in search is for PARCELS. That's what you pay L$30 a week for. To make your land appear in the Places tab in Search: Right-click on your parcel's terrain and select About Land. Choose the OPTIONS tab in the ABOUT LAND window. Check Show Place in Search (L$30/week). Choose a category from the dropdown list that most accurately describes your land.
  21. Ah, now THAT's a problem. You're right. The way that script is written, it keeps the two people side by side as they walk, which means turning them both relative to the center of the linkset. You may have to do a complete rewrite of the script to get around it -- well beyond the scope of anything to talk you through here. Sorry about that.
  22. The Second Life viewer should install automatically when you double click on the installer in your Downloads directory. I suppose your downloaded copy may have been borked somehow, so the first thing to do is try downloading a second copy. If that doesn't work, I'm at a loss to explain it, and can only suggest that you try downloading a different viewer entirely. I recommend Firestorm, which is an approved Third Party Viewer and probably the most popular one in SL right now. You will have all the functionality of Linden Lab's own viewer, plus more. Download it directly from their web site at http://www.phoenixviewer.com/downloads.php .

  24. Why not? We can't do a thing to help unless you can give us something to work with. What kind of computer do you have? What graphics card? What Internet connection? What error messages are you getting? What have you tried? Where does it stall in the installation process? Or is it installed but having trouble logging in? ANYTHING you can give us as a starting point would be better than "it will not install." Click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT to add information. Please do NOT start a new thread.
