  1. You've apparently already read LL's standard advice ... do not use wireless with SL. Many people ignore the advice without problems. For many others, wireless is a nightmare. It is susceptible to interference from all manner of sources, starting with cell phones and "smart" appliances and ranging through garage door openers, fluorescent light fixtures, and the TARDIS in your neighbor's basement. Your ping time and bandwidth sound good, so you may be one of the lucky ones, or maybe your neighbor just hasn't fired up his TARDIS lately. Personally, I feel much more comfortable with a wired connection that is designed to handle the continous heavy traffic that a SL session creates. That's just me, but you did ask for advice ..... :smileywink:
  2. There are two possibilities, both fairly common. The most likely is that your anti-virus routine is scanning every single texture that is downloaded from SL's servers to your computer. Doing that can eat a huge amount of CPU time. The way to beat it is to whitelist your viewer with your anti-virus program, so that it accepts the images without questioning each one. See this wiki site for information about how do do that >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/antivirus_whitelisting The other possibility is more complex, and appears to be mostly (but not exclusively) a problem for computers with NVidia graphics cards that are running Windows. For a brief discussion and two methods for overcoming that issue, see >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_100_cpu
  3. 9:45 . See the timestamp on your message here. It's in SLT.
  4. The "something" is generally rebuilding the locally cached copy of your inventory. Click "Clear Cache" in Preferences >> Network & Cache and then log out of SL. When you log in again, log in to a quiet (no lag) sim like Smith, Pooley, or Aqua. Move away from the landing area and open your inventory. Type any letter at all in the search field to jump start the rebuilding process and then go make a cup of coffee. Do not do anything in SL until the viewer has finished fetching your inventory. It may take several minutes, depending on the size of your inventory. That should clear up your problem.
  5. This usually means that your Second Life account has been administratively blocked. Short-term blocks (less than an hour) may be the result of inappropriate behavior inworld. Longer blocks are typically the result of abuse. You will be unable to use Second Life until the indicated time; if that is more than an hour away, you will receive an email from the abuse team on the matter. Be sure to check your spam filters. Linden Lab is unable to remove administrative blocks for abuse.
  6. This is a very large topic, so there is a lot to learn. Basically, you need two things: (1) a house and (2) and place to put it. It is wise to get them in reverse order, just as in RL >>> land first. Start reading here to understand some things about buying or renting land >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043 . For the second step, you have many choices. The easiest, perhaps, is to buy or rent land that already has a house on it. Many landlords will rent land with the house included in the price. The next easiest is to buy a house that someone else built and then put it on your land. There are hundreds of places in SL that sell houses, so they are very easy to find with your Search function. Finally, of course, you can build your own house. That takes some practice and skill, but it is inexpensive and personally rewarding. Prices vary, depending on the size of the land parcel that you buy or rent. You will want to study the Knowledge Base article that I mentioned earlier to get a feel for the factors that are involved. Linden Lab has made much of this very easy for beginners in SL. If you have a Premium membership, you are entitled to a Linden Home, which is provided on a 512 sq m parcel. Read about Linden Homes here >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Linden-Homes/ta-p/700103 If you do not choose to live in a Linden Home, you may use that Premium allowance to pay for a 512 sq m parcel of your own choosing on the Mainland, and use that as a place to build your own home.
  7. Welcome to Second Life, dangerousds! When you get your laptop, be sure that it is rated for gaming, and don;t plan on running Second Life with wireless. The greatest number of disappointed people we see here, IMO, are those who bought a simple laptop for business or casual use and then tried to access SL on wireless. You're bound to be disappointed unless you spend the money and get a computer with plenty of memory and an excellent graphics card (not an integrated graphics chip), and use a cable connection. BTW, this is not a game. :smileywink:
  8. Sorry. You can't. Your Transaction History in Marketplace is preserved as far back as you want to look, but the History that you access from your dashboard at secondlife.com >> Account is wiped after 30 days. You just have to get in the habit of downloading the history regularly and saving it to your hard drive.
  9. I know. As I said earlier, that's where the problem is greatest.
  10. For right now, the Direct Delivery system is not set up to accept no-copy items. If I recall correctly, Linden Lab originally hoped to have that step enabled by sometime this summer. Given the amount of trouble they have had with Marketplace this spring, and the fact that they have kept pushing the final conversation date from Magic Boxes back farther and farther, it doesn't look as if you will be able to load no-copy items in Direct Delivery until much later in the year. You can still load them in your Magic Box, however.
  11. Clearing your cache will not have any effect at all, except to slow down the time it takes for you to see anything, while your viewer is downloading every texture around you all over again. It is not a cure for a bake fail on your av.
  12. Yup. That's the bug. The servers can't figure out where your land stops.. So, the only way to beat it is to find that spot near the middle of the parcel where you CAN rez something. I know it's frustrating, but it's the best way. You'll just have to try rezzing a basic cube as near to the middle of your house as you can, and try and try until you get it to work. Some people have apparently tried wearing the object that they are trying to rez -- a sofa in your case -- and then dropping it near the middle of the house. That ought to work too, in theory, but my guess is that it will take about as many tries as the method I suggested. Linden Lab is trying to fix the bug, and I suspect that it has a high priority. Until they do, though, this is your workaround. Sorry.
  13. OK, so you tried the solution in my first paragraphs and had no luck at all? That bug is affecting some non-Linden homes as well. If that's really not the problem, it's possible that you are on a sim that needs to be restarted. If you are on a private sim, ask the landowner to do it. If you're on the Mainland, file a support ticket and ask LL to do it for you.
  14. Innula Zenovka's answer, posted at the top of this ancient thread, was marked correct because it works for most people. If you are having a similar problem and still having trouble, please start a new thread instead of burying your comments here in a necropost, where nobody will see them.
  15. The syntax is /me Your message goes here. Notice that /me is at the start of the line, and there is a space after it. If that's what you're doing and it still isn't working, add a note to your question and we'll take a guess at what's going on. Just click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  16. This isn't the place to look. We answer factual questions here about how SL works (or why it doesn't). You'll want to post your query in the Inworld Employment forum. You may also want to look at this wiki page for ideas >>> https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Guide_to_Jobs_in_Second_Life
  17. I'm not quite clear about what the problem is, so let me try a couple of things. If you are in a Linden Home and having trouble rezzing things, you're not alone. There's a well-known bug >>> Problem of not being able to rez on my land continues The servers are having trouble finding the edges of your parcel, so they assume that you are trying to rez outside them, on your neighbor's land. Until the Linden techs fix the bug, the way to beat it is to rez things as close to the center of your parcel as you can. Try rezzing a simple cube in the middle of your house. Try again and again and again until you find a spot where it works. Then rez anything else there and drag it to where you want it. If that's NOT the problem you are describing, it's possible that you are trying to rez things in a spot where you do not have permission --- in your partner's home, for example, where you might not have perms. If that's the case, you'll have to get the parcel owner to create a group, invite you to join it, and then set the parcel to the group (not deed it). Changing permissions on the furniture itself (by using the Edit menu in Tools) won't have any effect at all, since you already own the object and you have whatever perms the creator gave you with it.
  18. Agreed. It's not a task that can be handled in LSL, however, so outside the realm of this forum.
  19. Peggy has covered almost all of the ground. It sounds like you have a sick mouse. One simple thing that she didn't suggest is to clean your mouse's feet. If it's a ball mouse, open up the ball chamber and blow out the dust and goo in there. Wipe down the ball with a damp cloth, dry it, and put it back in. If you have a laser mouse, wipe its base. It's amazing how much a little dirt can mess up a perfectly good mouse, and how much a simple cleaning can fix it.
  20. You didn't tell us anything about your computer, but one possibility is that you are simply trying to run SL's viewer on a machine that is not powerful enough to handle it. We may be able to tell if that's the case if you can add some more information to your question. Just click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread. Another possibility is that you are using outdated drivers for your graphics card. You can go to the card manufacturer's web site and download an upgrade to the current version, then follow their easy instructions for installing it. Nvidia Video Driver Latest driver Last checked Feb 6th- Windows: 285.62 (Oct 24) beta: 295.51 (Jan 31) - Linux: 290.1 (Nov 22)ATI Video Driver Latest driver Last checked Feb 6th- Windows and Linux: 12.1 (Jan 25)Intel Video Driver Intel driver download page Intel does not have a universal driver set. Please go to Intel's site and select the appropriate download.
  21. It all boils down to a crummy Internet connection. Information about your appearance has to be "baked" onto your avatar on your own computer, saved there, and then uploaded to SL before it's fully visible there. If the necessary information is messed up in transmission, you may end up with a borked file on your computer, or SL's servers may end up with a borked image. Either way, your av's appearance defaults to a fluffy cloud. What works to repair the damage for one person won't necessarily work for the next person, and it may not be the same thing that works for you tomorrow. See the full list of possibilities here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail . Start with the simple things at the top of the list and work down until you find what works for you today. You may find that the bake fail problem comes back repeatedly, even after you fix it with one of the suggestions on that wiki page. I suspect that's the case, since you are also having trouble teleporting. Teleportation involves handing off your av, with all of its baggage, from one sim's servers to another. That's a busy operation, so interruptions in service can easily mess it up, even if the interruptions amount to a slightly higher than normal packet loss or a momentary drop in your available bandwidth. There are many steps to take for repairing it. Perhaps the simplest ones -- ones that work best for most people -- are: (1) Don't Use WIRELESS. Wireless connections are inherently less stable than direct cable connections and are more vulnerable to interference. Then, (2) Reboot your router. Unplug it from the power for a few minutes to let it clear its RAM. Then plug it back in and let it get a fresh hold on an IP address. Consult Nalates's blog for other good suggestions about diagnosing and repairing your connection >>> http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/
  22. There's rarely any reason to merge layers. So long as the layers are all active, they will be preserved in the final TGA or PNG image. The big disadvantage of merging is that it can't be undone later. If you have delicate details on a separate layer from your main design, keeping them separate leaves you the option of modifying (or removing) those details easily if you ever want to. So long as the layers are separate, too, you can apply masks or filters to them selectively.
  23. You might try posting in the Wanted forum.
  24. Continued from http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/Account-quot-Ollj-Oh-quot-can-not-log-in-via-https-id-secondlife/qaq-p/1562487 . If you have information to add to a question, click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread. If you are having trouble logging in to a SL web site, try using a different browser. Firefox and Chrome work much better on SL web sites than IE does. BTW, whatever you are using to log in to this site does work, obviously.
