  1. Wrong. Having permission to modify and to transfer is NOT the same thing as having permission to present the work as if it is your own. THAT is a violation of not only the TOS but the federal Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA). See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Intellectual_Property
  2. This is how silly rumors are spread, by people just saying, "Well, I don't know a thing, but this is what I heard ....." If you don't know a thing, don't say a thing.
  3. You'll want to do some background reading about Private Regions -- the only ones in which you can be an Estate Manager. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043 http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-Private-Regions/ta-p/700045 http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Managing-land/ta-p/700113 http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Managing-Private-Regions/ta-p/700115
  4. That's one of the classic questions in intellectual property law. If nothing else, you ought to review Linden Lab's Intellectual Property Policy and the links that are featured in it. Those will give you a feel for the complexity of the topic. Two common sense principles are possibly the best guide in answering the question: (1) Is a disinterested person likely to mistake your modified version for the work of the original creator? (2) Is your own contribution to the modified version substantial enough for the work to be recognized as new material? You can't draw sharp lines and answer either question easily all the time, but one way to approach it is to say that if you have doubts, it's probably not modified enough yet. If nothing else, that's a safe answer. Of course, another completely different approach is to forget modifying someone else's work. You can use it for inspiration, or to give you clues about how to solve structural problems, but why not make your own house? For all the work that's involved, you might as well get the satisfaction of creating the whole thing.
  5. Duplicate post. Original is at http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Avatar/why-wont-my-green-lines-work-hafe-of-the-time/qaq-p/1543313 .
  6. And if you're not using Phoenix, just change your group tag, TP to a different sim, and come back again. The person will be as good as new.
  7. There is no current list of the third party currency exchanges that have passed Linden Lab's Exchange Risk API and are therefore probably safe to use as alternatives to the Lindex. The most recent archived list, at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Archive/Third_Party_Linden_Dollar_Exchanges, does not include the fmx exchange, so there is no way to tell whether it ever passed that API. In fact, I cannot find any information about the fmx exchange at all. That could mean that they have gone out of business, or simply that they are hard to find. In any case, I recommend being very careful about trading L$ on any third party exchange that is not on the archived list above, and would encourage you to use the Lindex if at all possible. Lindex rates of exchange are lower than most third party sites, and you can be confident that your account infomation and your money are secure there.
  8. What green lines? Click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT to explain more. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  9. There are many reasons why items might appear to be lost from inventory. See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Lost_inventory for a full list and good suggestions about what to do about them. In many cases, the best solution is here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_cache_clear. That process will rebuild the local cached copy of your inventory from the permanent file in SL's asset servers.
  10. For whatever it's worth, there's a JIRA on this issue, filed in mid-April and not yet resolved, although it is flagged as a Major issue >> https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-27276 . There are no comments on it so far, so you may want to add yours, including a full description of your system specs and copies of any diagnostic messages you may have received.
  11. Depending on where you look and how you ask the question, script memory may be reported as a measure of how much memory has been allocated to each script (16 KB for a LSO-compiled script, 6KB for Mono), or the amount of memory that the script is actually using at the moment. Further, if the number is reporting what's really in use, it's an instantaneous measure. Milliseconds later, the same script might be using a quarter of that amount, or twice it. To complicate matters further, scripters can now use llSetMemoryLimit on Mono-compiled scripts to set an upper limit on the amount of memory that can actually be used by a script --- without changing its 64K allocation. That is, a scripter may set a memory limit of 32KB for a script that is allocated 64KB and may only be using 20KB at any specific moment. According to the LSL wiki .... A lower limit will effect the amount of memory reported in the viewer UI and by llGetObjectDetails. The memory limit is not the amount of real memory actually used by the script, just the upper limit on it. So, there's plenty of room for confusion.
  12. That's easy. Instead of continuing around the timer cycle indefinitely with i%total_wave_files, just stop the timer when i = total_wave_files. The problem of not hearing the first sound file would remain, of course, because it won't be preloaded until you are supposed to hear it for the second time --- which will never happen if you stop the timer when i = total_wave_files. The way to beat that is to preload it as soon as the user clicks to trigger the touch_start event and then play it as the first selection when the timer event executes. You'll probably have to do something to distract the user for those few seconds (or disable the touch_start event) to keep him from a bout of frustrated and counterproductive clicking. ("Loading .........") :smileytongue:
  13. As far as I am aware, Pathfinding is still only available on a handful of regions on the main grid that have asked to be part of the beta project. If you are on one of those sims and are having problems, you should talk with the sim owner or let Linden Lab's beta team know the nature of the problem so they can deal with it. The sim owner will know who to contact.
  14. The best advertizing is word of mouth. It takes time, but if you have good quality products that people want, they will show their friends. You can sometime use good quality freebies to spread the word a little faster. I also believe strongly in selling in world, not simply in Marketplace. Marketplace is fine as an on-line catalog store, but customers get to see your stuff in different ways in an in-world shop. They can walk around it, view it from different sides, get a feel for how big it is and what it looks like in a "real" setting. Even clothing, which is still largely marketed from pics on wall-mounted vendors, looks different when you see it displayed in a shop in world. More than half of my sales are now on Marketplace, but some of my best repeat customers come to the in-world shop.
  15. There's no TOS violation, so there's nothing to file an AR about. It's all drama on both sides. ("I don't like you so I won't play with you any more and I'll tell all my friends not to play with you either." .... "Well, then I'll tell my Mom that you're being mean.") Linden Lab won't pay attention to any of it.
  16. Venues and content featured in the Destination Guide are not paid placements. However, we welcome Resident suggestions for cool spots to feature. Some entries included in the Guide are also surfaced on the website for Residents exploring SecondLife.com for the first time. You can submit a venue for consideration on the Destination Guide Suggestion Page. You may suggest a destination using the form if: You personally own the parcel. You belong to the group that owns the parcel. You are on the access list of the Private Region that contains the parcel. The parcel belongs to Governor Linden and is set in ABOUT LAND > OPTIONS tab as a Hangout. The parcel belongs to a friend and is set in ABOUT LAND > OPTIONS tab as a Hangout. The parcel is 512m2 or larger. Suggested venues must comply with all of the following: Community Standards Trademark Guidelines Terms of Service DMCA policy Snapshot and machinima Policy Warning: Do not suggest content that is copyrighted or otherwise subject to another party's proprietary rights (including privacy, publicity, trademark, and trade secret rights) unless you own the rights or have the owner's permission. Content determined to infringe upon intellectual property rights is removed from our website and services. Residents are limited to two suggestions per month. You can also email the Destination Guide editors your suggestions. Much more information at http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/About-the-Second-Life-Destination-Guide/ta-p/700059
  17. People who run bots often look for a nice quiet place to park them when they aren't off doing their bot stuff. It's safer than putting them in a public sandbox, for example. It can be kind of creepy, but if they aren't doing anything, there's no harm. As the landowner, you can decide whther you want to put anyone on your ban list --- no need for explanation.
  18. The quick way is to select everything as a single coalesced (unlinked) object, take it to inventory, and then re-rez it again in the new location. I do not recommend that method, however. Although it is handy, it can sometimes be difficult or even impossible to rez large, complex coalesced objects. If there are Linden plants in them, if there are too many objects in them, or if you try to rez them in a place where parts are underground or outside parcel limits, you can have serious problems. It is slower but much safer to pick up well-labeled individual objects or smaller coalesced objects and then re-rez them as you get to the new location. Whenever I have done that, I have inevitably found that I didn't need some of the old things, or needed to rebuild them anyway, so it was worth taking my time to work slowly. There are more complete suggestions at http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-move-a-build/ta-p/919109 and you can read about coalesced objects at http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Building-tips/ta-p/700041#Section_.1
  19. There's a current bug that is making it hard to rez things in some Linden Homes. Read about it at SVC-7902: Problem of not being able to rez on my land continues. The problem is that the servers can't seem to figure out where the edges of your parcel are, so they assume that you are trying to rez things outside them. For now, the best solution is to find one spot in your home where you can rez an object --- probably close to the center of the parcel. Try rezzing a simple cube over and over again until you find a spot where it works. Then, rez anything else you want at that same spot and then move it to its final location. Linden Lab hopes to have the bug fixed in an upcoming server upgrade, so you shouldn't be stuck with this workaround for long. BTW, this is a resident-to-resident forum. There are no Lindens here, and none ever visit. We are SL residents like you.
  20. Continuation of http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Getting-Started/I-created-an-alt-the-other-day-when-I-try-to-login-it-rejects-my/qaq-p/1542725 . Click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT to add information. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  21. It's wise to learn how Second Life works before you go investing a lot of money into features that you may not need. You obviously need an account because there's no other way to enter SL, but it doesn't necessarily need to be a Premium account that you pay for. Review the descriptions of Basic and Premium accounts to see what the benefits of each are >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Accounts-overview/ta-p/700019 . If you think that you need land, I'd recommend renting on a private estate for a while to see what owning land entails before committing to a longer-term arrangement. Learn how to navigate and manage your belongings, how to communicate, how to create things, and -- most important -- learn the culture. If you were planning to set up a training institute in some foreign country in RL, you certainly wouldn't walk in on the first day, buy a huge estate, and open up shop without learning the local language and customs. This is no different.
  22. If you are using Firestorm, why not use its own internal AO instead of your old one? I'm suggesting that as a solution because 1. You already own it and it's free. 2. It is easy to set up and use. in the simplest mode, you just drag/drop your anims into it. See http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/animation_overrider 3. It operates on a different priciple from scripted AOs, so it doesn't contribute to lag. 4. Because it is not a scripted AO, it is not susceptible to sim-crossing effects and is not disabled if you are in no-script areas.
  23. That is normal, expected behavior, depending on whether you have previously been moving your cam around before you sit. You can recover the default camera angle (camera looking over your left shoulder) by hitting your Esc key at any time.
  24. Hehehe ... Some of my friends are slow typists who change their minds before they finally hit the Enter key.
