  1. If you are a Premium member of Second Life, go to https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/ to submit a support ticket and select Billing >> Refund: Non-Linden$ . If you are not a Premium member, that option is not available to you, but you may be able to get help by calling the LL billing office. (Interesting, since they do offer that category of support ticket for Premium accounts..... ) It sounds as if you may have an exceptional case, but don't be surprised if the answer is no.
  2. You can change the time of day in your sky easily by looking in the World menu for Sun Position. You can set it to Sunrise, Midday, Sunset, or Midnight. Those changes move the sun around your sky to different positions and elevations, giving you the effect of four times of day. You see them only in your own viewer. Nobody else sees the changes. If you want to try something more adventurous, play with your Windlight settings, also in the World menu under Environment Settings ... If you click that, you'll see an option to Customize My Environment. You can select different water and sky settings from a huge menu of options. Some of them are funky, some creepy, and some truly gorgeous.
  3. What kind of computer do you have? How much memory? What sort of Internet connection are you using? Which SL viewer are you using? Click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question here to add important information and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  4. It is barely possible that you have not been banned or suspended, but that your router is malfunctioning. Try rebooting it by unplugging it from the power for a few minutes. If that does not work, then your first guess was probably right ... you have been banned. The message that you reported here generally indicates you have been blocked from the Second Life servers by Linden Lab as the result of: Documented cases of fraud Use of Second Life by a minor Exceptionally flagrant abuse activity Note that someone else in your household may be responsible for this activity, not necessariliy with your account. You should have received an e-mail from Linden Lab explaining their decoision and telling you how to appeal. Please check your spam filter. If you believe that this is an error, submit a support ticket via the support portal. Don't try to e-mail someone... there's no way to do that. To help customer support determine what block has been placed and why, include in the ticket your Second Life account name and any Second Life accounts that log in from your location.
  5. It's hard to say without knowing much more about your computer or connection. if you are getting an error message then you truly are crashing, not disconnecting. The good news is, then, that you're probably not overheating -- one of the first things we worry about when SL dies on you after a few minutes. My best guess, though, is that you are expecting too much out of your computer. The Dell Inspiron is a pretty lightweight laptop, intended primarily for office and casual home use, not for the heavy demands of a gaming environment. You may have your Graphics Quality slider set higher than the computer can handle. Try setting it to Low and lowering your draw distance to 64m to start. If that helps, you can increase draw distance cautiously until you get in trouble again. Oh, and avoid using a wireless connection. That can easily cause problems if your system is marginal anyway.   6. Your Internet does work, but there's a lot of difference between "working" and working well enough to sustain the heavy bandwidth use and continuous data streaming that SL expects. SL is not like online games. Your viewer and SL's servers trade information back and forth all the time, so even a small interruption or overload can make you drop your connection. If you're getting that DNS message, your viewer and SL's servers have temporarily lost the ability to talk to each other. Unless there's a problem with the servers (Always check http://status.secondlifegrid.net/ first), it's probably something on your end. So.... (1) Try shutting off your computer, unplugging the router and modem for a couple of minutes, and then plugging them back in and restarting. That simple step may clear up everything 2) Supplement whatever DNS settings your ISP assigns you as a default. Don't remove those ones, but add Google's free public DNS servers above them in the list, so that your router uses Google's DNS servers as the default.   7. It might help if you could tell us what kind of computer (and graphics card and operating system) you are using as well as what sort of Internet connection you're on. I assume that you're using the current V3 viewer, but if not ...... what are you using? How far through the logon process do you get before it fails? What have you tried so far? All these and other pieces of information would make it much easier for us to start guessing what the problem is. As Lindal says, click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  8. There are a couple of possibilties..... 1. In order to play Flash format videos (eg YouTube videos), you must have the generic Adobe Flash plugin installed. If you use IE as your web browser and already have Flash, you will need to get the generic Flash plugin; see here. linux users need to have gstreamer installed, with the “bad” plugin set. 2. You may have your Maximum Bandwidth setting (in Preferences >> Network & Cache) too high. That setting tells your viewer how much of your available bandwidth to reserve for basic functions, not including voice and streaming media. If it's set too high, your viewer can use all of your available bandwidth for rendering textures, tracking positions of objects and avatars, communications, and other basics, and then have nothing left over for streaming media. For optimum performance in SL, set Maximum Bandiwdth no higher than 75% of your measured download speed (see http://www.speedtest.net/http://www.speedtest.net/ ).
  9. SL residents with Macs often have a problem with DNS settings. That might be the issue for you too. Your viewer and SL's servers have temporarily lost the ability to talk to each othere. Unless there's a problem with the servers (Always check http://status.secondlifegrid.net/ first), it's probably something on your end. So.... Mine go down for about 20 minutes once a month or so while they are vacuuming dust out of their servers, or whatever they do.
  10. I generally avoid using glow or use it very sparingly, so I haven't had any reason to mess around with the debug settings that adjust glow parameters. I notice, however, that the note on RenderGlowWidth says, "Glow sample size (higher = wider and softer but eventually more pixelated)". "More pixelated" sounds like your problem. Mine is set at 1.300, which I assume is the default. If yours is different, try that and see what happens.
  11. I prefer using Firestorm to upload temporary textures too, but you should be aware of the old standard method as well .... log in to the beta (Aditi) grid for your testing. You get L$25K of free Lindens, usable only on Aditi, so you have plenty of cash to upload textures with. You can't transfer those textures to the main grid, but that's fine. When you have a perfect texture to upload, you can move back to the main grid and pay your L$10.

It doesn't address the trailing carriage return challange, but that's easy enough to tag on.
  14. When you become a Premium member, you get a waiver for the land fees for a 512 sq m parcel on the Mainland. You may choose to use that waiver to claim a Linden Home, which sits on its own 512 sq m parcel, or you may apply the waiver to any other parcel that you buy on the Mainland. That is, if you buy a 512 sq m parcel, your land fees on it will be $0. If you buy a parcel that is in the next tier ( 512 < x < 1024) , you pay $3 a month instead of the normal $8 for a parcel in that tier.   16. It's really quite simple, probably. You belong to one or more groups that are expecting you to share in group liabilities for things like the L$30 a week that it costs the group to show their land in Search. That's the default in all groups, but many group owners change it so that only they and a few managers pay the costs. If you prefer not to pay your share, you may leave the group, or maybe send the owner a polite IM and ask her or him to reconsider how costs are shared. BTW, any time you wonder where your L$ are going, just go to your dashboard at secondlife.com and navigate to Account >> Transaction History. You'll be able to see who has given you L$ and to whom you have give yours during the past 30 days.

  18. If you want help solving the problem, you'll have to tell us what it is first. How far do you get through the login process before it stops working? What error message do you get, if any? Have you ever been able to log in before? If so, what have you changed recently? What computer are you using? What graphics card? What operating system? What kind of Internet connection? What SL viewer are you using? To tell us something useful so we can start figuring out what's wrong, click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question here and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread. BTW, this is a resident-to-resident Answer service. We are all SL residents like you. There are never any Lindens here.

    Read the Linden Lab Gambling Policy very carefully. If you have doubts about whether your game is "legal" after you read the policy, it probably isn't. In other words, interpret the policy conservatively.
  23. It probably is a DNS issue, but it might not be easy to solve by simply changing to the Google DNS servers. From the support team at Firestorm..... If your friends list and your group list are both empty and you disconnect on every teleport, can't initiate IM sessions then you most likely have this issue VWR-25426 or VWR-26759 if you are on a Mac and this issue only happens to you on Mesh enabled viewers. This issue can also, apparently, be triggered by time change (ie, daylight savings). The fix here is to set up Google Public DNS or OpenDNS. If changing the DNS servers hasn't worked, read through the very lengthy set of comments on those two JIRAs for other suggestons. Also, consider the possibility that your router may be failing.
