As humanity has expanded the area of "civilization" many wild animals have had their population decline dramatically but there's one big exception - the coyote. Coyotes are actually more widespread now than they ever have been. I heard someone describe the reason for their success by saying, "Coyotes never get into a fight they can't win." Makes sense to me.

  3. Sounds like a known problem with Intel HD4000 graphics, Windows 8 and SL. Simplest fix is to turn off basic shaders.

This is what i've been able to work out on this problem from reading posts and my personal experience: 1) The problem is that viewers don't draw certain objects in their caches when you first arrive at an area you've been to before. It seems to be related to an object being partially in your field of view and partially out of your field of view - since it's partially out of your view the viewer doesn't think it needs to be drawn, but because it's partially IN view the viewer doesn't think of it as a new object when you move your view to see more of it. 2) The problem has been around for a while but has appeared to get worse recently because the server code was recently changed to increase the number of classes of visible objects that can be read from the cache instead of being sent from the servers from scratch. 3) The missing objects will re-appear whenever you force the viewer to re-draw a scene - this can be by zooming way out and then back in, by changing the shader settings in "Preferences" or by going into and out of wireframe mode. Right clicking objects also works because that causes a redraw for those particular objects.
  5. Overall height is a combination of a number of different settings. For example, if your leg length is set at 100 then that will mean the minimum height you can set with the main "height" slider will be taller than it would be if your leg length was set to 30. Go through your entire shape and adjust the "length" settings down until you can get to the height you want to be.

  7. Older second hand desktop yes, AMD CPU maybe, AMD video chip NO FOR GOD SAKES NO. Second Life performance is 90% video card. Integrated laptop video just isn't designed to render dragons flying around. You'll want some variety of dedicated GPU and Second Life uses OpenGL as the graphics language. ATI/AMD video cards tend to have a lot of problems with OpenGL so you'll want to get a Nvidia card.
  8. It sounds like there are two basic possibilities: 1) You are getting not 800 kiloBYTES per second but 800 kiloBITS per second, and you have a not-very-good router. This is what I'd expect to see with DSL. 2) You actually HAVE upgraded your DSL to the point that you actually can GET the 6400 kilobits per second you say you're getting but you have a HORRIBLE router, at least in how it handles multiple HTTP connections.. If you're consistently seeing avatars not having their textures loading that's a connection issue plain and simple. Last night I was at a club with over 40 avatars and my Popular Mechanix sub-2000 kbps cable connection and $69 Wal-Mart cable modem rendered everyone in a few minutes. Turning off HTTP textures may help in the short term but more and more things are moving over to HTTP so you should try to get the problems it sounds like you're having with HTTP textures addressed.

Rudy, that's just... slow. Sorry. That's a touch faster than when I got my first broadband connection over four years ago and went with the cheapest possible option. I've lived between a rural party store and a cornfield and I had a faster connection there. Right now I live in an apartment complex where the owner apparently reads Popular Mechanix and decided to provide us with free cable internet and my connection's twice as fast here and it still ain't that great. And you probably got a really cheap router with it too. SL viewers using HTTP try to open a lot of connections simultaneously and some routers choke on that.

All indications are that ATI writes their OpenGL drivers by taping a paper lunch bag around a cat's head and having it walk around on a keyboard for a while. ATI is notorious for bad OpenGL drivers and has been for some time with many programs that use it. To answer your next logical question, Second Life uses OpenGL because it runs on Macs and LInux machines as well as Windows machines and it allows the viewer to be open-source. (And it works just fine on Nvidia cards because Nvidia takes the paper bag off the cat's head before it writes the drivers.)
  14. It had some bug fixes but the big difference is it has support for a new and (hopefully) more reliable way of rendering avatars called "Server-Side Baking" or SSB. The system itself hasn't been turned on yet but it will be in the next few weeks and viewers need to be updated so it will work properly.
  15. A lot of the web-based accessory functions like web profiles are actually handled by a separate program that the viewer loads called "SLplugin.exe" or something similar. Make sure your anti-virus or firewall isn't blocking it.
  16. Ooo, just had a thought - if "Hardware Cloth" (or something that sounds similar) is on in your graphics preferences, turn it off. It's an old setting that was meant to simulate the effect of "wind" on system clothes and it's certainly not that great an effect. I don't think turning it off will hurt anything and it may help, especially with the pant legs. This is different from "Hardware Skinning",which is needed for some things involving mesh and should stay on.
  17. Your processor, memory and hard drive look just fine - SL has very little use for your hard drive. The graphics card should be okay but not spectacular - I have a GT 640 which I like but isn't top of the line by any means. You can see how you like it now and upgrade it later. You'll certainly have no problems running modern viewers at medium settings or seeing mesh. If you upgrade your video in the future you'll want to upgrade your power supply at the same time - the GT630 is probably right at the high end of what a 300 watt power supply will handle and it probably doesn't have the specialized power connectors that many more powerful video cards use. Power supplies are comparatively cheap and can be dropped into a standard full-sized tower chassis without too much drama - I did it myself this past weekend. I assume you're getting WIndows 8 - at this exact moment in time you might look into getting Windows 7 instead. HP was still offering a few boxes with it when I checked a few days ago. SL can run under Windows 8 but there are still some rough patches apparently. However, the complaints I hear don't seem to be coming from Nvidia users so you could be okay.
  18. The servers play very little role in displaying avatar shapes and they are actually running OLDER code than normal right now. Seeing shapes, both yours and others, are basically a viewer function. There are a few possibilities: 1) With server-side baking there's a new parameter added to the shape called "Hover" that was an attempt to compensate for the inability to use TPV Z-offset adjustments with the new system. This has been known to cause glitches with body fat and it may be causing problems with shoulder blades too. This parameter was introduced viewer-side with the latest Firestorm release. See if you see the same thing with an older viewer. 2) Some badly-made rigged meshes can deform body shapes semi-permanently - it's mainly noticeable around the eyes. There are ways to reset them though. The best possibility is probably this, though: 3) They may have ALWAYS looked like that. If your shoulders are narrow your shoulder blades will stick out in sharp points but because the lighting is fairly flat you don't notice them with the standard straight-on view of your avatar's back. However, the points are very noticeable from certain unusual angles and have been as long as I can remember.

From what I've heard, the servers send inventory to the viewer one folder at a time, and there's a timeout that is triggered when the viewer can't get a folder's content in a certain amount of time, after which it gives up on it so it doesn't keep trying forever. This can be triggered by folders that have a very large number of items and the number I heard mentioned is (wait for it...) about 10,000 items. Try logging in from another physical location on the fastest connection possible and see if the missing folders show up, and then breaking them up into smaller folders.

So is there anything else i could try? Heck all the copies I made are corrupted as well... What viewer are you using? There are two different image-decoding protocols used in SL - the LL viewer and Firestorm use a system called KDU from a company called Kakadu which requires them to pay a license, and most others use OpenJPG which doesn't need a license but seems less reliable. I've encountered textures that appear corrupt in one viewer, including all the copies I make of it, but which display fine in other viewers, especially if they use the other image protocol..

Just went testing - the problem will be on BlueSteel and LeTigre sims, which are running code that was rolled back to an older version (i.e. older than the rest of the group.) for some reason this week. I didn't see a problem on Magmum or Main Channel sims. Arabella, the five minute Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was probably because you hit one of the regions running this old code.
  24. You might be able to work something out with the Yumix sims. They're a cluster of connected sims have a lot of water and many have aviation/air combat themes. They currently have two connected regions for rent. I believe the owners are Japanese but the sims seem pretty multi-lingual. Just search for "Yumix" on the map.
  25. Nobody can take your objects in SL unless you give them specific permission to. They could sit on them in their current location but that's it. There's a chance your landlord could return your items to the "Lost and Found" of your inventory if they're outside of an area you're allowed to put things but they can't be "stolen."
