  1. The problem is when people who "don't see a benefit" think that's a problem instead of considering that can be a benefit for other people.
  2. At least in the past, there was an upper limit to polygons that the viewers would draw in a small area so very polygon-dense objects would disappear in conditions like that. It used to happen with one maker's gacha packages if you rezzed several in one place. The increased LOD causes the number of drawn polygons/distance to increase. Try turning on wireframe and see if anything looks "solid."
  3. If it's a single texture, what would be the point of doing that instead of texturing the face normally?
  4. Is it only that region? Then (wait for it...) put in a ticket.
  5. You can also rezz a cube, drag a "substance" out of your inventory onto the face of the cube, and voila a textured cube where the texture has depth and responds naturally to light, and these qualities will follow along when you resize the original texture.
  6. Normally, when you make a cake you put in some eggs. If you're making an absolutely white cake you'll need to do something different, though, because if you put the eggs in per usual the yellow yolks will tint the batter and resulting cake. So, in order to make a white cake you'll need to know how to do something different than you're used to. This does not mean that: 1) Only a professional chef can make a white cake. OR 2) The recipes for the cakes you're used to making will change. OR 3) Non-white cakes will mysteriously vanish from the world. I'm not saying that you think any of this. But, depending on how you phrase things, other people might. And I'm not singling you out for any of this - I've long thought that people writing things for Linden Lab should be taught to assume that anything they say will be taken the worst possible way.
  7. Your avatar should look pretty much the same. Environment settings may have to change depending on how they were set up because the possible contrast range is wider. I generally use default settings and things look pretty much the same. Blacks do look darker though. If, however, you're using an environment that pushed the overall lighting to one end or the other of the contrast spectrum before it may well look "too bright" or "too dark" now.
  8. That's not saying anything about the actual rendering speed of the viewer. You're reviewing the taste of the pizza by saying how long it took the delivery driver to get to you.
  9. 1) Go to the library. 2) Open the "Materials" folder. 3) Right click the shinyballs and select "Copy." 4) Go to the "Materials" folder in your regular inventory. 5) Right click and "Paste." 6) Profit There are other things you can't/can't easily use directly from the library; they're mostly related to newer library avatars.
  10. It hasn't been implemented "grid-wide" because the viewers that most users run don't support it, which means, for them, absolutely nothing changes.
  11. I'm not seeing too many things that make me say, "That looks good before but now it looks bad." I am seeing some, "Well, that looked bad before, but now - yikes!" Shiny sweaters always looked bad under default lighting and the inside-of-a-ping-pong-ball environments people made were basically crutches to make things look reasonable. Some of the "avatar friendly" environments (pardon me, "windlights") go way back to when people were trying to hide polygon edges on system faces.
  12. Yes, but you'll be on hold for an hour and a half waiting to talk to the live tech because there's a massive line of people in front of you asking questions that could be answered by an AI bot.

Let me make sure I understand this: 1) Linden Lab hasn't done something to help, in your words, 5% of the users. 2) Somebody else already has. 3) The 5% are allowed to use viewer that Somebody Else has made. 4) Most people use a still different viewer anyway. Linden Lab has no need to be the "most popular" viewer; it's the equivalent of the coat hangers the dry cleaner gives you. They are generally responsible for major new viewer features. Therefore, it's to everyone's interest that new features come out and are able to be tested by a wider range of users than a small developer group to allow them to be developed. The majority of people who use Firestorm don't need to test the features. The 5% you're concerned about literally can't. So - where exactly is the problem here?
  14. 1) Mesh bodies started becoming popular pre-Bento. A pre-Bento head would be very difficult to customize and everyone wearing a body-and-head combination would have an almost identical face. 2) Even post-Bento mesh heads don't have the wide range of looks in a single head that you can get by using separate heads.

The legal action was actually started by the company that was the skeevier one, but it was in response to a DMCA takedown from the other. It ended up in a semi-confidential settlement. A couple more similar episodes - in the early years of mesh bodies somebody started sending DMCA takedowns over dubious claims. They drove Wowmeh out of business but then made the mistake of taking on Belleza, who lawyered up and discovered that the claim was within tolerance for flat-out fraud. Circumstantial evidence would indicate that the original DMCA-sender ended up getting their booty banned from Second Life, under multiple names. Then a head maker went ballistic over UV layouts with another - it ended up with both parties still in business and no finding of guilt. The aggressor probably should have worried more about making heads than their "intellectual property" because they've been floating around the yesterday bin for a while now.
  16. You're assuming that there are people using older computers who are running the LL viewer. I'd say the vast majority of them are running "Phoenix" or something similar to avoid the baleful influence of "Viewer 2." A "three-year-old laptop" these days would have been built in 2020. Hardware owned by non-technical people that chokes on deferred rendering was probably barely usable in most of Second Life some time ago.

  21. "Deformers" as the term is generally used mean objects that play animations that adjust avatar bones constantly. They wouldn't work to make Lara clothes work on a LaraX body because the deformer would deform the clothes in the same way. Really, every rigged mesh you wear has no idea about any other rigged mesh you're wearing. "Deformers" as the term the people behind the Legacy body used it were actually separate, differently shaped sections of mesh. Maitreya provides a perfect "deformer" using this definition by including the original Lara body with the LaraX package. The only other thing they could have done was provide separate upper and lower halves and they'd probably have to meet at the waist, which is one of the wonkiest parts of the original Lara body
  22. People who do this do it because they enjoy watching people get upset. "Confronting" them tells them what they're doing is working.
  23. No, that encourages not being a cloud - it's one of the required components.
