  1. There is also the point that rezzed content, no matter how bad it might be, is not really a performance problem in the grand scheme of things. If this was all in a game engine and we were chasing every last frame to a few percentage points then sure, but we're not and we're so far from that it's barely worth the time. SL shares the frame rate with a few really big grumpy elephants that aren't easily placated and probably never will be. It's easy to point at a mesh and say how objectively bad it is in isolation, but in the context of SL, it's just meeehhhh, and If we toss out the grumpy elephants we don't have SL anymore. Rigged stuff is the real moster in the room, but again, rarely because of the actual mesh itself, more how the rigging and animation system function by design.
  2. That's probably the most infuriating part of it. If anything it can be even worse, as in SL you know there are people ahead of arrival and I still instinctively check the map for dots before teleporting anywhere. For me, the same trick that's helped IRL has helped in SL. Go places with a friend, and if it gets overwhelming, you can at least derender everyone else. (Half the motivation behind the range of options for quickly derendering avatars in Catznip was keeping my social anxiety in check rather than just making SL go faster). I've slowly been getting more comfortable being social in SL again in tandem with lower anxiety IRL. This probably has more to do with being able to push myself in a controlled way in SL than anything I've done off screen.
  3. That can't happen. If LL redo the Li calculations to be actually representative of object complexity and clientside load, they would push the button, update the servers and half the grid would get auto returned. This would be followed by an emergency roll back minutes later once the screaming started. They could boost parcel Li in the same breath to avoid the apocalypse, but then, what would be gained. Li is not and has never been a measure of complexity and it is a mistake to view it as such. It's a land accounting and billing tool designed specifically to limit the amount of stuff people can have without needing to buy more land. It's is heavily dependent on object scale and as such, literally anything can be 1Li if made small enough.
  4. You're playing a computationally intensive rendered virtual world as a primary hobby. Like any other entertainment hobby this needs some investment in equipment. Demanding to do this on equipment well over a decade old is about the same as having a car hobby and wondering why vintage tires just don't see the get the mileage new ones do, or why this replacement well loved exhaust already comes with rusty holes. If your primary entertain hobby was reading, you could realistically expect to burn the same amount of money on books and shelves over the course of a couple of years (or far less depending on your tastes). If you get a desktop PC setup, the kids can only spill pop in the keyboard.. Maybe take the opportunity to replace some of your other vintage equipment and spend fewer of your remaining days reinstalling everything to get a print out. As someone with a stupid collection of vintage computer junk, I can reliably inform you there are no prizes for being a techno masochist, so unless you explicitly enjoy wasting hours upon hours poking garbage, just don't. Life is too short.
  5. As a Brit, I don't know that it's possible to separate those roles .. he only got the facebook gig because of his political career and ability to open governmental doors and offer a veneer of legitimacy. His white paper is all the same recycled waffle we saw about VR from a few years ago mixed in with vague promises that Meta aren't trying to remake the internet in their own bubble and privacy is really actually important. Even NFTs got a nod, although best not call them that out loud. The pitch is pretty clear, convince people who know nothing about tech that this isn't all some new evil plan by an evil company with a solid reputation for evil. Might as well have started out with "Dear Government friends, please don't break Meta up, I like it here."
  6. Intentionally buying vintage hardware that so far past it's service life it's fit for a thrift store is probably about the best way to waste money going. This will barely run SL. On a good day. With everything turned off. (I have also picked up considerably better machines than this for under $40 in said thrift stores). If you want an old junk machine for the fun / nostalgia of an old junk machine, this isn't bad .. but if you're in that market and burning this kind of money on that hobby, just buy a thinkpad. Windows 7 is not ace. It's dead and presents major security issues. Wanna get completely owned, this is the ideal OS to experience that. You're one viewer update away from not being able to run SL, and LL are extremely unlikely to fix it.
  7. CPU clock speed is now largely variable on a per core basis, they do spin up and down depending on workload to save power and not all the cores will be capable of hitting the very highest speeds. Hence why we have both single core and all core overclocking .. good luck!
  8. SL does a lot of work on the CPU , work that games don't. It still needs a good GPU, but it's more important how quickly it can deal with data coming from the CPU, rather than how much grunt it has to work with that data after its got it. SL does is not massively threaded. Some viewers claim to thread more .. in practice, it's not sufficient to change the advice at this time. I would recommend a Ryzen 5 5000 series chip. Boost speed is what you need to look at. If it has more cores than you think you need, don't worry about them. Certainly don't pick fewer cores thinking that going to be automatically better. Just buy the latest, fastest Ryzen you can afford, any extra cores will come in handy. 2 8GB sticks means your CPU can use both at the same time. This is pretty important to getting the most out of modern systems, especially Ryzen. It will benefit everything you do on your computer, not just SL.
  9. This is a mouse input issue. if you have mouse drivers installed, decrease the polling rate.
  10. It's not uncommon to find hosts further down the line who just don't care for ICMP traffic at all.
  11. I've been on dozens of different medications over the years. Some just didn't agree with me, some I only got side effects (or the side effects ramped up faster than the benefits), some did nothing at all, and some really helped. Personally I find it helpful to have a couple of known good medications that I can flip between, but its an ongoing struggle. Finding the right meds can be a challenge. The same pill can work wonders on one person and be junk for the next. There is a genetic component and the brain is deeply complex. While DNA testing is starting to come online, it's slow and expensive. The doc will likely just give you whatever is doing the best for most of their patients at that time, and most of the time for most people, that's not a bad recommendation. Right now, I'm finally off everything and actually doing pretty good. My anxiety is manageable and depression is off on holiday someplace, I hope it's having fun. There is no chance I could have gotten to this point without long term medication and working out what worked and what didn't. Do not, under any circumstances, go with a blanket avoidance of medication for "reasons". While it can be a bumpy ride, it really can make the difference between surviving and not. Depression isn't some nebulous vague sadness than can be tricked away with routine, habits or positive thinking. Depression is a very real illness that can easily and rapidly cascade into suicide. I have lost too many friends over the years, some of them thanks to people who didn't believe depression is real or who decided getting them off their medication and away from care and "big pharma" was the best option. If you suffer from depression, seek professional medical involvement. If you don't and you have a depressed friend or loved one, keep them engaged with professional services, by all means help them get better care, but don't for one second think your touchy feely google church denial and knowing best is doing them any good, if anything you're increasing the chances of losing them forever. "They were fine this morning, I though they were doing better, I don't understand it, they told me they were fine." and now they're dead.
  12. The simplest change that impacts the greatest number of people involved is no change at all. No one is going to welcome less authority over their land so a tiny handful of self entitled "explorers" will stop moaning on the forums. LL are not going to change the rules and/or add a whole new offering to the product stack just to give you right of way. You don't have right of way. The moment you enter someone else's parcel you are bound by their rules, even if those rules are "Bye Felecia". If you don't want to take that chance, limit your "exploring" to locations that are more permissive, like belli or one of the many private estates that explicitly cater to "exploring". I'm sorry you don't like aggressive orbs that ban intruders and tp them home, but your attitude kinda makes the point for having one.
  13. I did !! This is what happens when we have too many Clines. Someone should get on that right away.
  14. It was literally the 3rd thing in the instructional manual, sorry .. I don't read them anymore.
  15. 14 by Ernest Cline if you haven't .. no spoilers, and dont go looking up what its about either
  16. Who cares. If someone has an illness, the needs of that person is what matters. Denying someone treatment because some far flung mega corporation is unethical is itself unethical. Getting an appt with a doctor is the gateway to all further medical care, and starting off on some anti depressants is something immediate they can do while the rest of required health care machinery moves into place. Anxiety and depression don't have to make sense. No one needs, or should even expect to find a root cause or reason for their illness.
  17. and why smoke actual cigs when you can vape .. although I wouldn't recommend a nicotine addiction to anyone, but if you already have one .. for ducks sake don't be getting it from burning leaves in a paper tube.
  18. Don't discount online and SL friendships. A 5 minute appointment with your doctor will very likely result in a starter dose of anti depressants and they can be very effective. They can and do provide a great deal of help and support for people suffering from this illness, especially if in the early stages of depression. They absolutely are the first step in effective treatment. You can not "think" your way out of depression or anxiety. Self help coping strategies, exercises, books, "finding $diety" are only effective at masking the problem in all but the mildest cases, and can increase your chances of relapse with catastrophic consequences if attempted without medical supervision. Depression and anxiety are mental illnesses, that is illnesses that affect the brain which in turn affects the thinking and behavior of the person with the illness. You can't use the organ with the illness to diagnose and treat the illness, no more than you could use a broken finger to apply a splint to said finger. If you are suffering depression, no matter how mild or under control you believe it might be, add the phone numbers for suicide prevention hotlines to your phone, they can quite literally save your life or the life of someone you know. https://afsp.org/suicide-prevention-resources
  19. The purpose of life is life. It's entirely circular, self serving and will last as long as it lasts. The meaning of your life .. well that's something you have to work out on your own.
  20. I've struggled with depression and anxiety for many years, there are no easy and quick solutions. The first port of call should always be your Doctor, there are a lot of medications that can help, it will take some trial and error to find the right ones for you. It doesn't have to be a permanent thing and can genuinely help. Anxiety can be particularly debilitating and even prevent you approaching things that will objectively help (such as therapy or going for walks). Take your time. Be congnicent of your state of mind, keep a brief diary of your mood, celebrate the successes (no matter how small). Look after your self and fight for your basic daily routine. It wont always work out and even simple things are accomplishments, even if that thing turned out to be remembering to brush your teeth or take a shower. Even your demons can agree that a trip to the dentist would suck. If you have a friend with depression or anxiety, be patient and persistent. Today might not be the day you do the thing, but there is always tomorrow, and they will appreciate it. Specifically to the OP The road to recovery can be painfully slow and often feels littered with set backs. Things aren't better till they are, and till they are, keep trying as it all adds up. There isn't a single magic bullet, no one thing I've ever tried in isolation has worked. But I am profoundly grateful for the on going support and understanding from friends. The only "one weird trick" I've found that can help is planning. Sometimes making a decision today that wont come into play for weeks can take the edge of doing the thing when it comes around, if only because it's been looming for a while. In my case, I've committed to attending pride this year, my anxiety demon declared a hard no when presented with the possibility, it will come round and we will have a good day. Do not let your depression and anxiety define you, and don't keep the company of anyone who does.
  21. Roblox is eating our lunch and has a plan to mature the platform with the userbase whilst still being attractive to kids. It's also functionally far more responsive and not tied to design decisions made 20 years ago for a 3D world to test out haptics technology. You can't laugh at Roblox for having blocky avatars when you're a waldo.
  22. I have suggested it to she who cooks (I'm banned from the kitchen, reasons) .. passing on her thanks for the suggestion, I was just going to slurp them all !!!
