once a wannabe hacker threatened me on a message board because I called him out as wannabe. He even wanted my IP address, so he could hack my computer. I told him that my IP is "127.0.0.1", and waited while chatting with the others. Three hours later, he came back to that message board, and lamented that *I* would have wiped everything from his HDD.

roughly translated into English, by me: "Technical Editorial Dept. and Knowledge Communications" Maybe you mean "Das Blinklicht"?

Heh. My coffee machine usually wakes me up with freshly made coffee. (I only have to prepare the machine in the evening before - though when I forget that, I run on autopilot until after the 2nd mug... )

Corrections, grammar, spelling etc.
ThorinII replied to pennytrated's topic in General Discussion Forum
I've been around for almost half a century, and I've seen and learned a lot while reading and writing - as well as tutoring - in both languages. I've also learned to reckon the difference between someone who is just lazy and careless in writing, and someone with dyslexia - in both languages, German and English. Then there's also that spell checker function in many browsers, which marks the most obvious spelling mistakes with a red wavy line underneath. By the way, and because you asked: The last time I wrote »your« instead of »you're«, or let's say, »allot« instead of »a lot«, was about 37 years ago, when I was in 7th grade and just began learning English.- 148 replies

In chat, I can ignore grammar and spelling mistakes - but here in the forums, where you (general you) have the time to skim over your reply and edit it if necessary, I'm not as lenient. That said, English actually IS my second language, so I do occasionally have to look up some word, or do make the occasional grammar mistake. And yet, I always try my best - and expect the same from others. ESPECIALLY when it comes to posts in which they try to sell something, advertize an event, or are asking for help. After all, they want to be understood by the majority here, so (in my opinion) they should do their best, too.- 148 replies

Neither I nor any of my subs have been using Firestorm's built-in AO -- mostly for simply lacking the motivation to put all the animations into that viewer-AO thingy. Currently, I'm using a rather cheap Vista AO; my subs (mostly) the OpenCollar AO instead. That said, it seems to me that @eighthdwarf Checchinato's rant from May 2011 (!) still has its validity:

Ah, an old LADA (or, Zhiguli if you ask a Russian)! In RL, back in the early '90's, a used LADA 1300 was the second car I had. My first car was a second-hand Trabant 601

Insecure connection at login?

I disagree. Just now on Firefox when I tried to log in with that browser: (red and bold by me) Or do you mean the internal browser in the Firestorm viewer? -
Insecure connection at login?

On Linux, the browsers Qupzilla and Arora also show the error message - but unlike Firefox and Chromium, they do allow an exception (otherwise I wouldn't be here ) -

This. I don't NEED SL. Actually, there have been days without me logging in at all, and I didn't even miss it. SL simply happens to be just one of my hobbies, and I rather keep it that way.

Version 5.1.0.511732 - Linux Download Doesn't Work?
ThorinII replied to eighthdwarf Checchinato's topic in Second Life Viewer
I, too, have OpenSUSE Leap 42.3 (actually I was the one who talked eighthdwarf into using OpenSUSE many years ago ). And I am pleased that LL haven't given up on Linux yet. At least not in general. However, I think that LL should keep the tarball packaging - simply because it can be used by all Linux distributions. Take my (or eighthdwarf's) system for example: OpenSUSE (unlike *ubuntu or Linux Mint) is not based on Debian, it works with .rpm-packages instead of .deb-packages. So if LL were providing only a .deb-package instead of the usual tarball, it wouldn't really match the system, and would require some tweaking to get the viewer running nonetheless. Though, for an inexperienced user, it would be easier to just run the Windows release via WINE or PlayOnLinux.,. -

Second Life is filled with petty and rude people.
ThorinII replied to Ashlyn Voir's topic in General Discussion Forum
Well, for someone who thinks this virtual world SL were just a game (an assumption that is wrong on many levels in itself), and who isn't a sunshine themselves, I think you are just getting (or have been getting over the years) what you've been out to find. As the saying goes: "We reap what we sow." -

ThorinII replied to Ashlyn Voir's topic in General Discussion Forum
Tbh I don't know where some of you hang around inworld that you experience so much rudeness -- or, maybe I'm just a bit more tolerant regarding rudeness. On the other hand, I don't hang out on Mainland HUBs much, maybe that's why I've never met more than a handful really rude people a year. That said, when it comes to text-only chat (and I usually don't voice at all), then about 80% of communication is lacking: Body language, tone of voice, loudness, and so on - pretty much everything you experience in face to face communication in RL. When chatting, we have only words to talk and to emote. And this lack of non-verbal communication makes it easy to misunderstand people, to assume rudeness when the reply or greeting is meant neutral. And because I'm used to text-only communication (through chat, forums, and the like), I don't assume, at all. When unsure whether or not there's rudeness, sarcasm or irony involved, I'd ask "sorry, but how did you mean that?" Simple as that. -
