  1. search.secondlife.com treats its friends well. LL could do a better job teaching everybody how to use it, especially how to list things. i use it all the time, but mostly in a browser instead of in-viewer so that the world.secondlife.com pages are available. not enough places take good advantage of the "show in search" option for objects, they hinder their search visibility because they aren't showing off what they have to offer.
  2. you won't need a new viewer to use the new functions, the materials textures still work the same way. syntax highlighting would need a new viewer, but you don't really need that to write scripts that use the new constants. it is on the BlueSteel and LeTigre main grid channels now. this week's server rolls have not been annouced yet, you can watch the Second Life Server forum to see when it will move to the SL Server channel. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Server/bd-p/SecondLifeServer

Is there any other method to submit recommendations/suggestions? new feature suggestions are taken within the BUG project, even for web stuff. that pool is for the current Second Life service, there is not yet a public bug tracker for future products. it really is nice that JavaScript can easily access OpenGL now, but ultimately it's still the same old thing. the things that can really make a next generation VW cool are on a different layer.
  4. he also said that there would probably be some way for the same people to contribute, even if there is not an open source viewer. that could take the form of an extension API.
  5. Hellespont Hoorenbeek wrote: Im absolutely not spending money in Second Life anymore dont know if you heard but Linden Lab will pull the plug and stop broadcasting the grid when it becomes unprofitable, In my opinion it allready goes down the hill since 2011. Lately since the news is out people massifly abandoning sims and mainland prices are because of that low to buy in L$. I have zero faith Second Life will make it to SL12B "Second Life 12th Birthday" next year, As Linden Lab will start to work on some sort of new failure grid that would be as they say way better then it ever will be for Second Life. Either your keeping faith and put money in a deadbleeding concept or be smart and dont spend a dollar/Euro anylonger keeping fait and think things will be ok would be the same as you using drugs. Second Life will die face it, it is just a mather of when can be tomorrow can be next year when SL2 is released! I was lucky to have my sim sold befor this news came out otherwise im sure nobody would buy it from me so at the end im laughing Linden Lab in the face, You guys dont hurt me anymore with stupid releases and silly news! Im off to real life now:) can i have your stuff?
  6. Mony Lindman wrote: Interesting . I didnt hear about this Hypergrid before.. where is it , whats part of it ? More info please. how it works, participating grids etc. at http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Hypergrid
  7. right, it was not a leak. in that TPV meeting, Ebbe said that this was going to come out anyway, because he was talking to the press about the future.
  8. Mony Lindman wrote: What if all the teckies would put their brains at work together and find a solution to the problem of teleporting WITHIN the Open Sim! With inventory, money ballance and identity.. It cant be that much of a rocket science.. that exists, it is called the Hypergrid. on the technical side there is support for portable inventory and spacebux. on the business/social/legal side there is much resistance to allowing those features in a meaningful way. grid operators don't necessarily all trust each other not to steal foreign content, or to share in their inworld economies, so often the experience isn't much different from when SL was participating.
  9. TrunkzTomorrow2011 wrote: Garsh that would be awesome. I sent a ticket but my have sent the wrong one sounds like I should have sent one for a rollback then. Hopefully my long note will get it to the right people lol if the region still exists then your stuff should have been returned to you. if the region was returned to LL, then you asked for the right thing,. they can bring the old region back up (not a rollback) and you would go get your stuff.
  10. dewisilures wrote: Has anyone asked whether LL will be investing in new servers, or will they be waiting for people to leave and free up space on the old crappy ones they are using now? most of the hardware was replaced during 2012, so we are good for a while.
  11. Ebbe Linden wrote: Not sure what you mean by "tax issues". Yes, Lindens will go across just fine. I wish you all the best. the tax forms you (need to) ask for are not universally popular: http://virtualattire.blogspot.com/2014/06/official-statement-from-owner-of.html
  12. Callum Meriman wrote: Let me put it this way... We have normal residents who, now they know that SL's inventory can't be talen over will stop buying. We have content creators who, to get to sell int he new world will need to rebuild everything. We have TPV devs and patch submitters who now know that the anything they put into the TPV could be closed sourced. This is ethically wrong. Submissions made in the spirit of GPL and LGPL in which copyright was granted in good faith being used by the lab with a loss of opensource. Does that make sense to you now? LL has already burnt 2 sets of users, the TPV developers, a group of people LL have used for almost a decade to enhance their viewer, now look to be the third, UNLESS the lab are 100% sure not to ethically violate the GPL that I and others considered would remain in force. when i signed the contribution agreement, i did take the time to understand what it said before signing and sending it in. closed source was always a possibility. everyone else who has contributed patches to LL has signed the same agreement. there are some TPV developers who have wanted to keep their code strictly open source. some of them decided not to sign this agreement at all, and consequently LL will not accept their patches. others who have signed the agreement are free to pick and choose what patches they share with LL, and some are selective about what they share.
  13. Callum Meriman wrote: Doesnt change that they are GPL and LGPL. that is not how it works. the code is contributed to LL under a totally different license, plus a transfer of copyright. it is not the same license the TPV developers offer to you or me.
  14. Callum Meriman wrote: Oh Ebbe, one last thing I just considered. As you change the course of the Lab and in-effect abandon SL and all the money we spent over the last decade+ for your new project, please be very careful to fully obey the GPL on all code you modify or reuse from SL. You are going to be closely watched by the TPV community I would say in that regards. Oz at least has some idea of that side of it. A lot of the code in SL viewer, some of the best parts I would personally say, has come from the community itself not from your programmers. That code - if you use any of it - will force you to opensource your new viewer. Mind you, that would be a GOOD thing. the community contributions to the Second Life code are accepted through a separate contribution agreement. LL jointly owns those contributions, LGPL is how they offer them back.
  15. the feature is there but it needs a restart. Advanced->Show Debug Settings, (or Debug>Show Debug Settings from the login screen), set FullScreen as TRUE, restart. if the display looks fuzzy, you can adjust it to native screen resolution with Advanced>Set Windows Size... if your display's size is not listed on the menu, you can type it in.
  16. it starts to break at about 10000 members but you probably don't have to worry about it. viewer patches in RC fix this, and by the time your group gets this big the patches ought to be in all the viewers. for notices and chat, size of your own group is not the big factor, it is really timing luck with other groups sharing the same servers.
  17. if you retaliate in a place that is not a combat sim, the probable outcome is that the person who attacked you first will send in an AR about what you did, and put your account at risk.
  18. that feature was disabled because of spam attacks. you would only have old received messages in there, if they were sent before the attacks. it was separate from inworld IMs, but logged in people could get notifications there, if they wanted.
  19. Ashy Calcutt wrote: Hello I been trying for about a week now to leave a group I hit the Leave button to leave the group but it won't let me leave i even reloged alot of times but still it won't let me leave.. How can i fix this? Thanks for your help:smileywink: this has been a problem with extremely large groups. there is a very expensive check to see if you are the last owner, before it will let you leave any group. the lightweight client Radegast lets the server do this work and has much more success. http://radegast.org/wp/ the current Snowstorm viewer has some improvements to the way group member lists are loaded, these changes may also help. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release/3.7.10.291042
  20. that project really died by the end of 2007, at the time there was not a great interface for it. High Fidelity has a much more practical implementation of the idea. it is not imediately clear how well this could be retrofitted to Second Life, the same degree of interactivity would be impeded by its architecture.
  21. this is a good time to ask this question! group bans will be possible across the grid after today's rolling restarts are complete. you can get the group ban project viewer needed to use this new feature from http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Alternate_Viewers
  22. these objects probably have "allow anyone to move" enabled. some people think that randomly moving these objects is comedy gold. they need to get out more. to find these items quickly, log in with an alt who does not have permission to edit your stuff. Open Build>Pathfinding>Linksets, this will show you all objects in the region that this avatar has permission to move. you can then check and fix the permissions with your regular account. there is another editor flag, "share with group", that can have similar consequences.
