  1. You should not manually open ports. A few times Windows Firewall has asked me for approval on opening ports for Second life -- that only gives Second Life permission to use the port. You would only approve opening a port if you trust the software If this is a port issue, I would have expected your firewall to request permission also. (I am using Win 7 also.) My first suggestion reflects my bias about virus protection: If you are not using Microsoft Security Essentials (free download from MS), I suggest that you download it, remove what your are now using, and Immediate/y install the MS product. I know I have no SL problems from Security Essentials. After you do that, remove you current copy of the viewer, download a fresh copy of the SL Setup program, and reinstall. Watch for port permission requests during the install and be sure to give approval. If that does not fix the problem, you may have a partial failure in your router. I have had that happen -- Internet works fine, but SL does not because the router failure affects only those special ports. TKR
  2. I have not seen that problem often, but here is a report tht might be relevant: Get logged out a lot? Check your router http://virtualoutworlding.blogspot.com/2011/01/kit-get-logged-out-lot-check-your.html SL uses ports that are not commonly used on the web, so it is sometimes blocked by firewalls and atrivirus programs. Norton is known to create problems. I use MS security essesntials and have no problems. I am using win 7 64 and know of many other SL users with win 7. TKR

  8. I can't guarantee this, but I find that in Viewer 2.x, an activated microphone is represented by a green dot in the nearby speakers list and in the nearby people list. If the mic is not on, the dot is white. TKR
  9. Be sure your are using the advanced mode, not the basic more: Basic mode for newcomers, update for voice http://virtualoutworlding.blogspot.com/2011/05/kit-basic-mode-for-newcomers-update-for.html Then see if this helps: Appearance--Overview http://virtualoutworlding.blogspot.com/2011/04/kit-appearance-overview.html TKR
  10. This responds to your question: How can I back up my inventory? http://virtualoutworlding.blogspot.com/2011/01/kit-backup-my-inventory-how-can-i.html And this: CAUTION. You can't buy to own. http://virtualoutworlding.blogspot.com/2011/04/kit-caution-you-cant-buy-to-own.html TKR
  11. You should not be operating without a firewall. And should not have to. The firewall on your computer should let you set it to handle that. Some modem/routers have had problems with SL beacause SL uses ports not commonly used for routine internet traffic. I dont know whether that applies in your case. If you can borrow another router, preferably Linksys, see if that works for you. TKR
  12. You can can raise the land level on your sims. See this web page Terraforming, Starter page http://virtualoutworlding.blogspot.com/2011/05/kit-terraforming-starter-page.html Or you can reset the water level in the Region/Estate panel, terrain tab Open the Region/Estate panel this way (Viewer 2): World (top menu) ... Place Profile ... Region/Estate..Terrain... Water Height TKR PS. This has nothing to do with the viewer.

  17. I agree there are problems in the Viewer 2 series that would not have been acceptable in work from computer science students in the 1980's (when I taught programming). On notecards, I also send to new people. The IM window does take inventory drop, so that is what I use. But there are problems for copy-paste and clicking on embedded objects to copy them to inventory, because the edit cursor often gets misplaced. That seems to happen most often with multiple edits of notecards. I have given up on notecards for sending text--what I want to tell people is on my blog. I put web links in the notecard I send. People usually seem to be able to copy-paste and so read the post. For commonly use items, I have the links available and put them into chat. To give objects, I have set up giver-boxes to get away from the problems with embedded objects and the misplaced cursor. TKR
  18. Heterocera has a lot of Linden owned roardway. I think it goes all around the atoll lagoon. I recommend starting here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Calleta/181/209/32 Go south fro this point and you will probably pass some railcars (track runs in the road). There may also be busses and an Ice cream wagon. TKR
  19. No copy means that when you the item is lost, you can't replace it: See this advice: CAUTION. You can't buy to own. http://virtualoutworlding.blogspot.com/2011/04/kit-caution-you-cant-buy-to-own.html TKR Virtual goods are not real. And No-Copy items are especially ephemeral. They can be lost from your inventory from the sim where you have them placed in the process of rezzing or taking back into inventory
